    Get PDF
P.Mil. I 2. 17 has been interpreted as a mythical or historical text and even considered as a fragment of Timaeus of Tauromenion. It was labeled by López Martinez, Fragmentos papiráceos de novela griega, 1998 – number 39 of her edition – as valde incertum –. The text is interesting both from a linguistic point of view and for raising a question concerning the literary genre to whom it pertains. The purpose of this paper is to review the text and to deep in the study of its literary genre

Disciplina ministrada no primeiro semestre do terceiro ano. Objective To evaluate the effect of a games-based intervention on palliative care nursing students’ scores on the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale. The challenge was to innovate and integrate grief-related theory and experiences into the classroom. Method Quasi-experimental study. Before and after the games-based intervention, 101 and 111 students completed the questionnaires, respectively. The intervention was performed in the context of a palliative care class taught during the first semester of the third year of the nursing programme. Results The students obtained moderate mean scores on the variable fear of death (between 14 and 19) at both time points (pre- and post-intervention). Both men and women indicated a heightened sense of fear post-intervention and a decrease in self-perceived emotional preparedness, which support the value of the games for exposing the student to situations that closely approximated reality. Conclusion The use of games as a didactic tool in the classroom context helped the students recognize the fear generated by proximity to death in the patient and family and in the student him- or herself. Two subgroups and of a group are said to be totally completely conditionally permutable (tcc-permutable) if permutes with for some , for all and all . In this paper, we study finite products of tcc-permutable subgroups, focussing mainly on structural properties of such products. As an application, new achievements in the context of formation theory are obtained. The third and fourth authors are supported by Proyecto MTM2010-19938-C03-02, Ministerio de Economia y Competitividad, Spain.

Fil: Aguirre, Cesar Augusto. Integrated MASW and ERT Imaging for Geological Definition of an Unconfined Alluvial Aquifer Sustaining a Coastal Groundwater-Dependent Ecosystem in Southwest Portugal

This paper integrates multichannel analysis of surface waves (MASW) and time-lapse electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) to define aquifer geometry and identify transient groundwater features of the Cascalheira Stream Basin Holocene alluvial aquifer (aquifer H), which contributes to the Santo André Lagoon, part of a coastal groundwater-dependent ecosystem (GDE), located in southwest Portugal. MASW measures shear-wave velocity (VS), allowing one to obtain steady geological models of the subsurface, and ERT measures subsurface electrical resistivity (ER), being subjected to ambient changes. MASW enables disambiguation of geological structures in low ER environments, such as coastal areas. This research covered one natural year and involved one MASW campaign, four ERT campaigns, and additional geological field surveys and groundwater monitoring to assist interpretation of results. In the area, the conjugate NW–SE and NE–SW strike-slip fault systems determine compartmentalization of geological structures and subsequent accommodation space for Holocene sedimentation. MASW and ERT surveys show how the NW–SE system deepens these structures toward the coast, whereas the NE–SW system generates small horsts and grabens, being one of these occupied by aquifer H. From upstream to downstream, aquifer H thickness and width increase from 10 m to 12 m and from 140 m to 240 m, respectively. Performance of VS and ER models was satisfactory, with a normalized error of the VR and ER models in the 0.01–0.09 range, meaning that a quantitative quota of uncertainty can be segregated from the overall uncertainty of groundwater models without substantially affecting its simulations accuracy. This methodology seeks to improve the design of shallow groundwater research in GDE preservation policies.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

Metal-free catalyzed ring-opening polymerization and block copolymerization of Âż-pentadecalactone using amino-ended initiators

    Get PDF
Metal-free catalysis was successfully applied to polymerize ¿-pentadecalactone (PDL) by ring-opening polymerization (ROP) using several amino-ended initiators, namely hexylamine, allylamine and O,O'-bis(3-aminopropyl)diethylene glycol. This polymerization method was suitable to prepare telechelic polyesters carrying functional-end groups. The technique was then extended to the synthesis of block copolymers by ROP of PDL using bisamino-ended poly(ethylene glycol) (Mn¿=¿2600) as macroinitiator. PPDLx-PEG56-PPDLx triblock copolymers with Mn ranging between ~4000 and ~90,000¿g¿·mol-1 were synthesized and extensively characterized by NMR, DSC, TGA and XRD. The amphiphilic copolymers thus produced were demonstrated to be able to self-assemble in nanoparticles with average diameters of ~100–200¿nm and morphologies highly depending on blocks lengths. The described synthetic route distinguishes in providing “clean” amphiphilic copolymers, which are attractive candidates for biomedical applications.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Untargeted metagenomic sequencing identifies Toscana virus in patients with idiopathic meningitis, southern Spain, 2015 to 2019

Background: Various pathogens, including bacteria, fungi, parasites, and viruses can lead to meningitis. Among viruses causing meningitis, Toscana virus (TOSV), a phlebovirus, is transmitted through sandfly bites. TOSV infection may be suspected if patients with enterovirus- and herpesvirus-negative aseptic (non-bacterial) meningitis recall recent insect bites. Other epidemiological factors (season, rural area) may be considered. The broad range of possible meningitis aetiologies poses considerable diagnosis challenges. Untargeted metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) can potentially identify pathogens, which are not considered or detected in routine diagnostic panels. Aim: In this retrospective, single-centre observational study, we investigated mNGS usefulness to understand the cause of meningitis when conventional approaches fail. Methods: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) samples from patients hospitalised in southern Spain in 2015-2019 with aseptic meningitis and no aetiology found by conventional testing, were subjected to mNGS. Patients' demographic characteristics had been recorded and physicians had asked them about recent insect bites. Obtained viral genome sequences were phylogenetically analysed. Results: Among 23 idiopathic cases, TOSV was identified in eight (all male; median age:  39 years, range: 15-78 years). Five cases lived in an urban setting, three occurred in autumn and only one recalled insect bites. Phylogenetic analysis of TOSV segment sequences supported one intra-genotype reassortment event. Conclusions: Our study highlights the usefulness of mNGS for identifying viral pathogens directly in CSF. In southern Spain, TOSV should be considered regardless of recalling of insect bites or other epidemiological criteria. Detection of a disease-associated reassortant TOSV emphasises the importance of monitoring the spread and evolution of phleboviruses in Mediterranean countries.ESL laboratory received funding from Institut Pasteur, from the INCEPTION programme (Investissements d’Avenir grant ANR-16-CONV-0005), from the NIH PICREID program (Award Number U01AI151758) and from the Labex IBEID (ANR-10-LABX-62-IBEID).
