Why governing parties change their platforms more frequently than those in opposition

Following an election, are parties that enter government more likely to alter their electoral platform than parties in opposition? Gijs Schumacher, Marc van de Wardt, Barbara Vis and Michael Baggesen Klitgaard present findings from data on party programmes going back to 1945. Their research indicates that, contrary to expectations, parties in government are more likely to alter their programme than parties in opposition, but that this effect depends on the extent to which parties aspire to hold office in the next election

Assessment of the value of remotely sensed surface water extent data for the calibration of a lumped hydrological model

For many catchments, there is insufficient field data to calibrate the hydrological models that are needed to answer water resources management questions. One way to overcome this lack of data is to use remotely sensed data. In this study, we assess whether Landsat‐based surface water extent observations can inform the calibration of a lumped bucket‐type model for Brazilian catchments. We first performed synthetic experiments with daily, monthly, and limited monthly data (April–October), assuming a perfect monotonic relation between streamflow and stream width. The median relative performance was 0.35 for daily data and 0.17 for monthly data, where values above 0 imply an improvement in model performance compared to the lower benchmark. This indicates that the limited temporal resolution of remotely sensed data is not an impediment for model calibration. In a second step, we used real remotely sensed water extent data for calibration. For only 76 of the 671 sites the remotely sensed water extent was large and variable enough to be used for model calibration. For 30% of these sites, calibration with the actual remotely sensed water extent data led to a model fit that was better than the lower benchmark (i.e., relative performance >0). Model performance increased with river width and variation therein. This indicates that the coarse spatial resolution of the freely‐available, long time series of water extent used in this study hampered model calibration. We, therefore, expect that newer higher‐resolution imagery will be helpful for model calibration for more sites, especially when time series length increases

The value of multiple data set calibration versus model complexity for improving the performance of hydrological models in mountain catchments

The assessment of snow, glacier, and rainfall runoff contribution to discharge in mountain streams is of major importance for an adequate water resource management. Such contributions can be estimated via hydrological models, provided that the modeling adequately accounts for snow and glacier melt, as well as rainfall runoff. We present a multiple data set calibration approach to estimate runoff composition using hydrological models with three levels of complexity. For this purpose, the code of the conceptual runoff model HBV-light was enhanced to allow calibration and validation of simulations against glacier mass balances, satellite-derived snow cover area and measured discharge. Three levels of complexity of the model were applied to glacierized catchments in Switzerland, ranging from 39 to 103 km2. The results indicate that all three observational data sets are reproduced adequately by the model, allowing an accurate estimation of the runoff composition in the three mountain streams. However, calibration against only runoff leads to unrealistic snow and glacier melt rates. Based on these results, we recommend using all three observational data sets in order to constrain model parameters and compute snow, glacier, and rain contributions. Finally, based on the comparison of model performance of different complexities, we postulate that the availability and use of different data sets to calibrate hydrological models might be more important than model complexity to achieve realistic estimations of runoff composition

OBJECTIVE: There is a need for a widely accepted comprehensive disease activity measure for use in daily practice in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA). For this reason, the 3-item Visual Analogue Scale (3VAS) and 4-item Visual Analogue Scale (4VAS) were developed. This study aimed to test construct validity and responsiveness of the 3VAS and 4VAS in a population of patients with newly diagnosed PsA receiving usual care. METHODS: Components of the 3VAS (physician global, patient global, patient skin) and 4VAS (physician global, patient pain, patient joint, patient skin) were scored on 0-10 VAS scales. Agreement of low disease activity (LDA) state between 3VAS/4VAS and other composite measures was tested using Venn diagrams. Construct validity and responsiveness (3-month interval) were assessed using Spearman correlation coefficients and standardised response means (SRM) with effect sizes (ES), respectively, following hypothesis generation. Both 3VAS/4VAS were also compared with several patient-reported outcome measures. RESULTS: Data from 629 patients were used. Both 3VAS (ES=0.48, SRM 0.52) and 4VAS (ES=0.48, SRM=0.50) showed responsiveness similar to Disease Activity in PSoriatic Arthritis (DAPSA) and Disease Activity Score-28 (DAS28). Both measures had a strong correlation with DAPSA (r=0.80-0.87), Psoriatic Arthritis Disease Activity Score (PASDAS) (r=0.89) and Routine Assessment of Patient Index Data 3 (RAPID3) (r=0.84-0.92). 3VAS and 4VAS had the highest agreement with PASDAS in categorising patients to LDA at 12 months. CONCLUSION: This is the first study assessing the performance of the 3VAS and 4VAS in an observational cohort of patients with early PsA. Both measures have promising performance characteristics, showing strong correlations and good discrimination with existing composite measures. The 4VAS may be the preferred version with better face validity.</p

DNA protection by histone-like protein HU from the hyperthermophilic eubacterium Thermotoga maritima

In mesophilic prokaryotes, the DNA-binding protein HU participates in nucleoid organization as well as in regulation of DNA-dependent processes. Little is known about nucleoid organization in thermophilic eubacteria. We show here that HU from the hyperthermophilic eubacterium Thermotoga maritima HU bends DNA and constrains negative DNA supercoils in the presence of topoisomerase I. However, while binding to a single site occludes ∼35 bp, association of T. maritima HU with DNA of sufficient length to accommodate multiple protomers results in an apparent shorter occluded site size. Such complexes consist of ordered arrays of protomers, as revealed by the periodicity of DNase I cleavage. Association of TmHU with plasmid DNA yields a complex that is remarkably resistant to DNase I-mediated degradation. TmHU is the only member of this protein family capable of occluding a 35 bp nonspecific site in duplex DNA; we propose that this property allows TmHU to form exceedingly stable associations in which DNA flanking the kinks is sandwiched between adjacent proteins. We suggest that T. maritima HU serves an architectural function when associating with a single 35 bp site, but generates a very stable and compact aggregate at higher protein concentrations that organizes and protects the genomic DNA

Time to minimal disease activity in relation to quality of life, productivity, and radiographic damage 1year after diagnosis in psoriatic arthritis

Background: In a cohort of patients with newly diagnosed psoriatic arthritis (PsA) who received usual care, we investigated the impact of time elapsed to minimal disease activity (MDA) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL), work productivity, and radiographic damage throughout the first year after diagnosis. Methods: Data collected in the Dutch southwest early PsA cohort (DEPAR) study were analyzed. These threemonthly data encompassed disease activity, HRQOL was measured with the Short Form 36 (SF36) Physical Component Scale (SF36-PCS) and Mental Component Scale, and productivity was measured with the Productivity Cost Questionnaire. Radiographic damage was scored at baseline and at 12 months with the PsA-modified Sharp/ van der Heijde score. Patients were classified by time to MDA as in early (within 3 months), late (at 6–12 months), and never MDA in the first year. Results: We included 296 patients who had had their 1-year outpatient visit (mean age 51 years, 53% male). Ninetysix (32%) were classified as early MDA, 78 (26%) as late MDA, and 98 (33%) as never MDA. Data of 24 patients (8%) were missing. SF36-PCS and productivity scores improved after gaining MDA, but remained low in never MDA patients. At 1 year, SF36-PCS and productivity scores were similar in early and late MDA patients. Radiographic progression rate was low and similar in all groups. Conclusion: Gaining MDA was associated with considerable improvement in HRQoL and functioning, irrespective of time to first MDA. In the one third of patients not in MDA in the first year, the disease had a substantial health impact

Objective: To assess whether patient characteristics add to the fetal fibronectin test and cervical length measurement in the prediction of preterm delivery in symptomatic women. Study design: A nationwide prospective cohort study was conducted in all ten perinatal centres in the Netherlands. Women with symptoms of preterm labour between 24 and 34 weeks gestation with intact membranes were invited. In all women qualitative fibronectin testing (0.050 tig/mL cut-off) and cervical length measurement were performed. Only singleton pregnancies were included in this analysis. Logistic regression was used to construct two multivariable models to predict spontaneously delivery within 7 days: a model including cervical length and fetal fibronectin as predictors, and an extended model including all potential predictors. The models were internally validated using bootstrapping techniques. Predictive performances were assessed as the area under the receiver operator characteristic curve (AUC) and calibration plots. We compared the models' capability to identify women with a low risk to deliver within 7 days. A risk less than 5%, corresponding to the risk for women with a cervical length of at least 25 mm, was considered as low risk. Results: Seventy-three of 600 included women (12%) had delivered spontaneously within 7 days. The extended model included maternal age, parity, previous preterm delivery, vaginal bleeding, C-reactive protein, cervical length, dilatation and fibronectin status. Both models had high discriminative performances (AUC of 0.92 (95% CI 0.88-0.95) and 0.95 (95% CI 0.92-0.97) respectively). Compared to the model with fibronectin and cervical length, our extended model reclassified 38 women (6%) from low risk to high risk and 21 women (4%) from high risk to low risk. Preterm delivery within 7 days occurred once in both the reclassification groups. Conclusion: In women with symptoms of preterm labour before 34 weeks gestation, a model that integrates maternal characteristics, clinical signs and laboratory tests, did not predict delivery within 7 days better than a model with only fibronectin and cervical length.
