    Get PDF
This paper considers new techniques for complex surveys in the case of estimation of proportions when the variable of interest has ordinal outcomes. Ordinal modelassisted and ordinal model-calibrated estimators are introduced for class frequencies in a population, taking two different approaches. Theoretical properties and numerical methods are investigated. Simulation studies using data from a real macro survey are considered to evaluate the performance of the proposed estimators. The empirical coverage and the length of confidence intervals are computed using several techniques in variance estimation. We also use data from an opinion survey to show the behavior of the proposed estimators in real application

Arsenic, one of the main environmental pollutants and potent natural poison, is a chemical element that is spread throughout the Earth's crust. It is well known that the toxicity of arsenic is highly dependent on its chemical forms. Generally, the inorganic species are more toxic than its organics forms, and As(III) is 60 times more toxic than As(V). In environmental waters, arsenic exists predominantly in two chemical forms: As(III) and As(V). In this work, a new magnetic solid phase extraction method based on magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) coupled to graphene oxide (GO) functionalized with [1,5-bis (2-pyridyl) 3-sulfophenylmethylene] thiocarbonohydrazide M@GOPS was developed. The new system was based on the adsorption of As(III) and As(V) using M@GO-PS to revome them from natural waters. The As determination in the untreated and treated waters was realized by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP MS), because the high sensitivity of this technique. Today, Drinking Water Treatment Plants (DWTP) are unqualified to eliminate totally the As concentration in natural waters, and due to its toxicity is needed. In this work, the adsorption process of a recently patented magnetic material (M@GOPS) towards As (III) and As(V) has been studied. For this study, a drinkable water from Alcaucín, a village of Malaga, was contaminated with As in order to develop all the adsorption experiments. The kinetics of the process have been studied, showing a good approximation to the Langmuir's theoretical model. The magnetic adsorption procedure has shown a performance of 100% in less than 30 min for the elimination of As, with a dosage of 1 g/L of M@GO-PSTH in a potable water with an initial concentration of 0.01 g/mL of As.Universidad de Málaga. Ontology-Driven Approach for KPI Meta-modelling, Selection and Reasoning

A key challenge in current Business Analytics (BA) is the selection of suitable indicators for business objectives. This requires the exploration of business data through data-driven approaches, while modelling business strategies together with domain experts in order to represent domain knowledge. In particular, Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) allow human experts to properly model ambiguous enterprise goals by means of quantitative variables with numeric ranges and clear thresholds. Besides business-related domains, the usefulness of KPIs has been shown in multiple domains, such as: Education, Healthcare and Agriculture. However, finding accurate KPIs for a given strategic goal still remains a complex task, specially due to the discrepancy between domain assumptions and data facts. In this regard, the semantic web emerges as a powerful technology for knowledge representation and data modeling through explicit representation formats and standards such as RDF(S) and OWL. By using this technology, the semantic annotation of indicators of business objectives would enrich the strategic model obtained. With this motivation, an ontology-driven approach is proposed to formally conceptualize essential elements of indicators, covering: performance, results, measures, goals and relationships of a given business strategy. In this way, all the data involved in the selection and analysis of KPIs are then integrated and stored in common repositories, hence enabling sophisticated querying and reasoning for semantic validation. The proposed semantic model is evaluated on a real-world case study on water management. A series of data analysis and reasoning tasks are conducted to show how the ontological model is able to detect semantic conflicts in actual correlations of selected indicators.Universidad de Málaga. An ontology-based secure design framework for graph-based databases

    Get PDF
Graph-based databases are concerned with performance and flexibility. Most of the existing approaches used to design secure NoSQL databases are limited to the final implementation stage, and do not involve the design of security and access control issues at higher abstraction levels. Ensuring security and access control for Graph-based databases is difficult, as each approach differs significantly depending on the technology employed. In this paper, we propose the first technology-ascetic framework with which to design secure Graph-based databases. Our proposal raises the abstraction level by using ontologies to simultaneously model database and security requirements together. This is supported by the TITAN framework, which facilitates the way in which both aspects are dealt with. The great advantages of our approach are, therefore, that it: allows database designers to focus on the simultaneous protection of security and data while ignoring the implementation details; facilitates the secure design and rapid migration of security rules by deriving specific security measures for each underlying technology, and enables database designers to employ ontology reasoning in order to verify whether the security rules are consistent. We show the applicability of our proposal by applying it to a case study based on a hospital data access control. This work has been developed within the AETHER-UA (PID2020-112540RB-C43), AETHER-UMA (PID2020-112540RB-C41) and AETHER-UCLM (PID2020-112540RB-C42), ALBA (TED2021-130355B-C31, TED2021-130355B-C33), PRESECREL (PID2021-124502OB-C42) projects funded by the “Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación”, Andalusian PAIDI program with grant (P18-RT-2799) and the BALLADER Project (PROMETEO/2021/088) funded by the “Consellería de Innovación, Universidades, Ciencia Sociedad Digital”, Generalitat Valenciana
