Follow your nose: chemical communication throughout the European eel (Anguilla anguilla, L.) life-cycle
European eels are important in both scientific and economic terms. Unfortunately, current populations are becoming increasingly endangered and urgentmanagement is needed. Several aspects of eel biology, together with their highly developed sense of smell, suggest
that chemical communication could be involved at key stages of their life-history. Thus, advances in this area could generate novel tools for stock management
Petrology and geochemistry of the Old Edifice of Santa Luzia island (Cape Verde Archipelago)
Santa Luzia island is essentially formed by erosional remnants of, at
least, one volcanic edifice: the Old Edifice. The remains of this edifice are
now a NW-SE trending mountain range. It is a fisural edifice that follows
this trend and is formed by hundreds of meters of aa-type lava flows crosscut
by dikes. Lithologic compositions are basic and ultrabasic (picrobasalts,
basanites, basalts and trachybasalts), intermediate (trachyandesites) and felsic
(trachytes and phonolites). The main process generating these compositional
picríticos, basanitas, basaltos y traquibasaltos), intermedias (traquiandesitas)
Effects of educational mismatch on private returns to education: An analysis of the Spanish case (1995-2006)
This study examines the effects of educational mismatch on wages in the Spanish labour
market since the mid-nineties. First we study the evolution of returns to education and then we
estimate returns to education in terms of the match between the worker’s schooling and the job
requirements. The results indicate that returns to education have declined since the mid-nineties.
One also finds that the return associated with the job’s required education is greater than that
corresponding to the worker’s actual schooling, and that the return on an additional year of
attained education is positive b ut less than that of an additional year of required education. From
a policy perspective, the existence of educational mismatch points to inefficiencies in the
allocation of the educational resources. Investment on education can positively contribute to
alleviate the unemployment problem in Spain, but taken into account the existence of educational
mismatch it also becomes necessary to introduce structural reforms in order to adapt the job
structure to a model of production based on knowledge so that the more highly qualified workers
can find a job that corresponds to their educational level.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation (Fun-damental Research Projects ECO2009-13864-C03-01 and ECO2009-13864-C03-02)
Bioimpedance real-time charazterization of neointimal tissue inside stents
It is hereby presented a new approach to monitor restenosis in arteries fitted with a stent during an angioplasty. The growth of neointimal tissue is followed up by measuring its bioimpedance with Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Besides, a mathematical model is derived to analytically describe the neointima’s histological composition from its bioimpedance. The model is validated by finite-element analysis (FEA) with COMSOL Multiphysics®. Satisfactory correlation between the analytical model and the FEA simulation is achieved for most of the characterization range, detecting some deviations introduced by the thin "double layer" that separates the neointima and the blood. It is shown how to apply conformal transformations to obtain bioimpedance models for stack-layered tissues over coplanar electrodes. Particularly, this is applied to characterize the neointima in real-time. This technique is either suitable as a main mechanism of restenosis follow-up or it can be combined with proposed blood-pressure-measuring intelligent stents to auto-calibrate the sensibility loss caused by the adherence of the tissue on the micro-electro-mechanical sensors (MEMS).Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Spain): projects TEC2013-46242-C3-1-PMinisterio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (Spain): projects TEC2013-46242-C3-2-
ECO2009-13864-C03-0
Gender wage differentials and educational mismatch: an application to the Spanish case
This article aims to analyse gender wage differentials in Spain by taking into account the levels of educational
attainment and by studying whether the educa-tional mismatch affects the gender wage gap. Focusing on returns to
education, evidence is found on the existence of educational mismatch and on its contribu-tion to determine wages, with
women suffering greater wage penalties that are associated with educational mismatch. Furthermore, although the
gender wage gap is lower for individuals with low educational levels, we find that the part of this gap due to differences
in returns is greater in this group. On the contrary, the gender gap is greater among highly-educated workers, but in this
case most of the wage differentials are due to differences in productive characteristics. In any case, our results suggest
that gender wage discrimination tends to be greater for those workers who show educational mismatch.Spanish

Real-time electrical bioimpedance characterization of neointimal tissue for stent applications
To follow up the restenosis in arteries stented during an angioplasty is an important current clinical problem. A new approach to monitor the growth of neointimal tissue inside the stent is proposed on the basis of electrical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) sensors and the oscillation-based test (OBT) circuit technique. A mathematical model was developed to analytically describe the histological composition of the neointima, employing its conductivity and permittivity data. The bioimpedance model was validated against a finite element analysis (FEA) using COMSOL Multiphysics software. A satisfactory correlation between the analytical model and FEA simulation was achieved in most cases, detecting some deviations introduced by the thin “double layer” that separates the neointima and the blood. It is hereby shown how to apply conformal transformations to obtain bioimpedance electrical models for stack-layered tissues over coplanar electrodes. Particularly, this can be applied to characterize the neointima in real-time. This technique is either suitable as a main mechanism for restenosis follow-up or it can be combined with proposed intelligent stents for blood pressure measurements to auto-calibrate the sensibility loss caused by the adherence of the tissue on the micro-electro-mechanical sensors (MEMSs).This work was carried out in collaboration with the Cardiology Department of the UHMV Hospital, Santander (Spain) and was funded by the Spanish Government’s “Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad” under the joint projects TEC2013-46242-C3-1-P and TEC2013-46242-C3, co-financed with FEDER

In the present research titled the fantastic story a didactic strategy to strengthen the interpretative competence and the textual production in the students of grade 4 of the Educational Institution Normal High School headquarters 4 Dosquebradas Icononzo Tolima, allowed the investigating group to carry out a series of pedagogical interventions , Used as a didactic tool the fantastic story with the sole purpose of strengthening the student in relation to the interpretive competence, and without neglecting textual production.
Undoubtedly, we must denote the pedagogical model that is oriented in this institution, since this one is cuddled by the modality of New School which facilitates of one way or another the application of the investigation. On the other hand in the pedagogic interventions were covered subjects related to the tests knowledge and the teaching of these same ones.
Finally, the research group showed the impact of the project within the community in general (students, parents) since it allowed to establish communication links between the same community, since in the majority the pedagogical interventions pointed to the interaction between educando- Educator and the family nucleus, in this way it can be affirmed that the initial task of the present investigation was fully fulfilled giving the students a new way of seeing the fantastic stories and at the same time strengthening the interpretive competence and the textual production in them
