ALTERNATIVE CONCEPTIONS, INITIAL KNOWLEDGE, AND SELF-EFFICACY OF THE NOVICE AND EXPERT GEOLOGIST REGARDING MINERAL IDENTIFICATION

Research shows the novice geologist begins an introductory geology course with alternative conceptions about minerals and other geoscience concepts. Students use their prior understanding of these concepts as the basis for future learning. If students’ frameworks include alternative conceptions about foundational geoscience concepts, these could hinder their ability to learn more factual and complicated ideas and facts in the future. It takes time to change these alternative conceptions. For this reason, instructors need to understand their students’ prior understandings of geoscience concepts at the beginning of the courses to move students to a better understanding of the material. Moreover, the potential impediments to satisfactorily learning the material may also result in lower student confidence levels in the classroom, potentially affecting their academic performances. The first lab taught to entry level college students is typically a mineral identification lab and it is usually the students’ initial introduction to minerals. An understanding of these concepts will also help students feel confident in their abilities to understand and complete their remaining labs. In the 2018 spring and fall semesters, data was collected through one-on-one interviews with 15 University of Northern Colorado (UNC) undergraduate students, three UNC graduate teaching assistants and four UNC earth science professors. This research will add to the research that concerns alternative conceptions of the novice earth science student and to better understand and reveal potential differences and similarities of the novice and expert geologist regarding their alternative conceptions, initial knowledge state, and self-efficacy in relation to mineral identification

Antipsychotic drugs have been used effectively for the treatment of schizophrenia symptoms, but they are often associated with metabolic side effects such as weight gain and endocrine disruptions. To investigate the possible mechanisms of antipsychotic-induced metabolic effects, we studied the impact of chronic administration of a typical antipsychotic drug (haloperidol) and an atypical antipsychotic (risperidone) to male rats on food intake, body weight, adiposity, and the circulating concentrations of hormones and metabolites that can influence energy homeostasis. Chronic (28 days) haloperidol administration had no effect on food intake, weight gain or adiposity in male rats, whereas risperidone treatment resulted in a transient reduction in food intake and significantly reduced body weight gain compared to vehicle-treated control rats. Whereas neither antipsychotic had any effect on serum lipid profiles, glucose tolerance or the circulating concentrations of hormones controlled by the hypothalamo-pituitary-thyroid (free T4), -adrenal (corticosterone), -somatotropic (IGF-1), or -gonadotropic axes (testosterone), haloperidol increased circulating insulin levels and risperidone increased serum glucagon levels. This finding suggests that haloperidol or risperidone induce distinct metabolic effects. Since metabolic disorders such as obesity and type 2 diabetes mellitus represent serious health issues, understanding antipsychotic-induced endocrine and metabolic effects may ultimately allow better control of these side effects

Introduction Social vulnerability is a known determinant of health in respiratory diseases. Our aim was to identify whether there are socio-demographic factors among COVID-19 patients hospitalized in Spain and their potential impact on health outcomes during the hospitalization. Methods A multicentric retrospective case series study based on administrative databases that included all COVID-19 cases admitted in 19 Spanish hospitals from 1 March to 15 April 2020. Socio-demographic data were collected. Outcomes were critical care admission and in-hospital mortality. Results We included 10,110 COVID-19 patients admitted to 18 Spanish hospitals (median age 68 (IQR 54–80) years old; 44.5% female; 14.8% were not born in Spain). Among these, 779 (7.7%) cases were admitted to critical care units and 1678 (16.6%) patients died during the hospitalization. Age, male gender, being immigrant, and low hospital saturation were independently associated with being admitted to an intensive care unit. Age, male gender, being immigrant, percentile of average per capita income, and hospital experience were independently associated with in-hospital mortality. Conclusions Social determinants such as residence in low-income areas and being born in Latin American countries were associated with increased odds of being admitted to an intensive care unit and of in-hospital mortality. There was considerable variation in outcomes between different Spanish centers.JPA is under contract within the Ramón y Cajal Program (RYC-2016-20155, Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad, Spain). Our research objective is to study variables impacting product-market fit such as biodegradability, quality, and multi-use. The significance of this research is to come to solution to solve a business problem. The general business problem our team seeks to examine is: due to the steadily growing amount of plastic waste, the green movement will continue to gain traction. In turn, businesses utilizing plastics will see government regulations being imposed. The social problem our team seeks to examine in conjunction with the general business problem is continuing to waste plastic will cause our society to accelerate the effects of global warming. “The world produces more than 300 million tons of plastic, half of which is designed for single use” (Interaction Council). Our research will examine whether certain variables: biodegradability, quality, and multi-use, could potentially become key market differentiation factors to serve as the basis of an innovative new business venture. In addition to secondary research including industry and competitor research, three different qualitative research methods will be completed prior to the April 19, 2019 NEIU Creative and Research Symposium, to arrive at a triangulation of the data upon which to base the research findings and conclusions we propose to present at the symposium a total of 5 face-to- face interviews completed. Digital proof-of-concept online tests using Facebook, Google, LinkedIn, Email, and Twitter platforms. Our focus group is to be determined but will be used to obtain feedback about minimal viable product concept. Our team’s research results may indicate a potential new business venture opportunity that could potentially be captured by leveraging the product-market fit variables biodegradability, quality, and mutli-use. Should such findings result, the research conclusion will be expressed as a new business venture unique value proposition
