    An ALMA Survey of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey UKIDSS/UDS Field: Number Counts of Submillimeter Galaxies

    We report the first results of AS2UDS, an 870 μm continuum survey with the Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) of a total area of ~50 arcmin2 comprising a complete sample of 716 submillimeter sources drawn from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey (S2CLS) map of the UKIDSS/UDS field. The S2CLS parent sample covers a 0.96 degree2 field at σ 850 = 0.90 ± 0.05 mJy beam−1. Our deep, high-resolution ALMA observations with σ 870 ~ 0.25 mJy and a 0farcs15–0farcs30 FWHM synthesized beam, provide precise locations for 695 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) responsible for the submillimeter emission corresponding to 606 sources in the low-resolution, single-dish map. We measure the number counts of SMGs brighter than S 870 ≥ 4 mJy, free from the effects of blending and show that the normalization of the counts falls by 28% ± 2% in comparison with the SCUBA-2 published counts, but that the shape remains unchanged. We determine that 44−14+16{44}_{-14}^{+16}% of the brighter single-dish sources with S 850 ≥ 9 mJy consist of a blend of two or more ALMA-detectable SMGs brighter than S 870 ~ 1 mJy (corresponding to a galaxy with a total-infrared luminosity of L IR gsim 1012 L ⊙), in comparison with 28% ± 2% for the single-dish sources at S 850 ≥ 5 mJy. Using the 46 single-dish submillimeter sources that contain two or more ALMA-detected SMGs with photometric redshifts, we show that there is a significant statistical excess of pairs of SMGs with similar redshifts (<1% probability of occurring by chance), suggesting that at least 30% of these blends arise from physically associated pairs of SMGs

    The VANDELS ESO public spectroscopic survey

    VANDELS is a uniquely deep spectroscopic survey of high-redshift galaxies with the VIMOS spectrograph on ESO’s Very Large Telescope (VLT). The survey has obtained ultradeep optical (0.48 < λ < 1.0 μ m) spectroscopy of ≃2100 galaxies within the redshift interval 1.0 ≤ z ≤ 7.0, over a total area of ≃0.2 deg2 centred on the CANDELS Ultra Deep Survey and Chandra Deep Field South fields. Based on accurate photometric redshift pre-selection, 85 per cent of the galaxies targeted by VANDELS were selected to be at z ≥ 3. Exploiting the red sensitivity of the refurbished VIMOS spectrograph, the fundamental aim of the survey is to provide the high-signal-to-noise ratio spectra necessary to measure key physical properties such as stellar population ages, masses, metallicities, and outflow velocities from detailed absorption-line studies. Using integration times calculated to produce an approximately constant signal-to-noise ratio (20 < tint< 80 h), the VANDELS survey targeted: (a) bright star-forming galaxies at 2.4 ≤ z ≤ 5.5, (b) massive quiescent galaxies at 1.0 ≤ z ≤ 2.5, (c) fainter star-forming galaxies at 3.0 ≤ z ≤ 7.0, and (d) X-ray/Spitzer-selected active galactic nuclei and Herschel-detected galaxies. By targeting two extragalactic survey fields with superb multiwavelength imaging data, VANDELS will produce a unique legacy data set for exploring the physics underpinning high-redshift galaxy evolution. In this paper, we provide an overview of the VANDELS survey designed to support the science exploitation of the first ESO public data release, focusing on the scientific motivation, survey design, and target selection

    An ALMA Survey of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey UKIDSS/UDS Field: Identifying Candidate z ∼ 4.5 [C II] Emitters

    We report the results of a search for serendipitous [C ii] 157.74 μm emitters at z sime 4.4–4.7 using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). The search exploits the AS2UDS continuum survey, which covers ~50 arcmin2 of the sky toward 695 luminous (S 870 gsim 1 mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs), selected from the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey 0.96 deg2 Ultra Deep Survey (UDS) field. We detect 10 candidate line emitters, with an expected false detection rate of 10%. All of these line emitters correspond to 870 μm continuum-detected sources in AS2UDS. The emission lines in two emitters appear to be high-J CO, but the remainder have multi-wavelength properties consistent with [C ii] from z sime 4.5 galaxies. Using our sample, we place a lower limit of >5×10−6 Mpc−3\gt 5\times {10}^{-6}\,{\mathrm{Mpc}}^{-3} on the space density of luminous (L IR sime 1013 L⊙{L}_{\odot }) SMGs at z = 4.40–4.66, suggesting ⩾7\geqslant 7% of SMGs with S870μm≳1{S}_{870\mu {\rm{m}}}\gtrsim 1 mJy lie at 4 < z < 5. From stacking the high-resolution (~0farcs15 full-width half maximum) ALMA 870 μm imaging, we show that the [C ii] line emission is more extended than the continuum dust emission, with an average effective radius for the [C ii] of re=1.7−0.2+0.1{r}_{{\rm{e}}}={1.7}_{-0.2}^{+0.1} kpc, compared to r e = 1.0 ± 0.1 kpc for the continuum (rest-frame 160 μm). By fitting the far-infrared photometry for these galaxies from 100 to 870 μm, we show that SMGs at z ~ 4.5 have a median dust temperature of T d = 55 ± 4 K. This is systematically warmer than 870 μm selected SMGs at z sime 2, which typically have temperatures around 35 K. These z sime 4.5 SMGs display a steeper trend in the luminosity-temperature plane than z ≤ 2 SMGs. We discuss the implications of this result in terms of the selection biases of high-redshift starbursts in far-infrared/submillimeter surveys

    A Machine-learning Method for Identifying Multiwavelength Counterparts of Submillimeter Galaxies: Training and Testing Using AS2UDS and ALESS

    We describe the application of supervised machine-learning algorithms to identify the likely multiwavelength counterparts to submillimeter sources detected in panoramic, single-dish submillimeter surveys. As a training set, we employ a sample of 695 (S 870μm gsim 1 mJy) submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with precise identifications from the ALMA follow-up of the SCUBA-2 Cosmology Legacy Survey's UKIDSS-UDS field (AS2UDS). We show that radio emission, near-/mid-infrared colors, photometric redshift, and absolute H-band magnitude are effective predictors that can distinguish SMGs from submillimeter-faint field galaxies. Our combined radio + machine-learning method is able to successfully recover ~85% of ALMA-identified SMGs that are detected in at least three bands from the ultraviolet to radio. We confirm the robustness of our method by dividing our training set into independent subsets and using these for training and testing, respectively, as well as applying our method to an independent sample of ~100 ALMA-identified SMGs from the ALMA/LABOCA ECDF-South Survey (ALESS). To further test our methodology, we stack the 870 μm ALMA maps at the positions of those K-band galaxies that are classified as SMG counterparts by the machine learning but do not have a >4.3σ ALMA detection. The median peak flux density of these galaxies is S 870μm = (0.61 ± 0.03) mJy, demonstrating that our method can recover faint and/or diffuse SMGs even when they are below the detection threshold of our ALMA observations. In future, we will apply this method to samples drawn from panoramic single-dish submillimeter surveys that currently lack interferometric follow-up observations to address science questions that can only be tackled with large statistical samples of SMGs

    Trade-off in ecosystem services of the Somerset Levels and Moors wetlands

    It is widely recognised that healthy ecosystems can provide considerable benefits to people, including food, timber, freshwater, protection from floods and much of what we call quality of life. A global review of these ecosystem services carried out as part of the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (MA) provided a framework for national and local studies. Using the MA approach, this paper reviews the ecosystem services provided by the Somerset Levels and Moors wetland system in south-west England. This wetland provides a series of important services that are beneficial locally, regional and globally, including grazing for cattle, potential carbon sequestration, flood water storage, recreation and archaeology. Some services are synergistic and reinforcing; for example, maintaining wet conditions supports wetland bird life that maintains biological diversity, attracts tourists, protects archaeological artefacts and reduces CO2 emissions. Other services are potentially conflicting, for example raising water levels may reduce potential flood water storage and increase methane emissions. Comparison of the services of the wetland with those of drier habitats reveals for example that carbon sequestration, bird habitat provision and hay production is greater in wetlands, whilst grazing quality and plant diversity may be reduced and distributions of disease vectors may be altered by wetland restoration through raising water levels. Management decisions affecting wetlands may necessitate a trade-off of ecosystem services
