    Five examples of two-coordinate copper(I) fluoride complexes stabilized by five-, six-, and seven-membered-ring N-heterocyclic carbenes or a cyclic (alkyl)(amino)carbene have been prepared, structurally characterized, and employed in the catalytic allylation of octanal. The very bulky trityl-based carbene ITr affords the most active catalytic system. Mechanistic studies have led to the isolation of (ITr)Cu(CH2CHCH2) and [{(6-Mes)Cu}2(μ-OEt)][SiF5], which along with the fluorosilane (EtO)3SiF are of relevance to the catalytic cycle

    The facile syntheses of ring-expanded N-heterocyclic carbene (RE-NHC) copper(I) halide complexes are reported. The method makes use of a weak inorganic base in a green solvent. The reaction times can be greatly reduced by use of this weak-base route under microwave irradiation. The easy access to these complexes permits an evaluation of the catalytic activity and reaction profiling of [Cu(RE-NHC)X] complexes in the Huisgen 1,3-cycloaddition reaction

    Alterations in Team Physical Performance and Possession in Elite Gaelic Football Competition

    Differences in performance between winning and losing were examined in 1 elite Gaelic football team in 20 games across 2 complete competitive seasons. Possession was codified using Dartfish TeamPro software and distance covered; walking, jogging, running, and running at high and maximum speeds, was evaluated using Catapult Optimeye S5 player tracking devices. Distance covered in low intensity activity (LIA, ˂4.0 m.s-1 ), high intensity running (HIR, ≥4.0 m·s-1 ) and very high intensity running (VHIR, ≥5.5 m·s-1 ) was also examined along with PlayerLoad™, which represented a composite of all accelerations. Data from 53 players (n=405 files) was collated into specific match periods to facilitate a temporal analysis between the first and second halves and from quarter 1 (Q1) to quarter 4 (Q4), with significance accepted at p ≤ 0.05. Total distance and running was higher in games lost, whereas total distance, walking and LIA was higher in halves lost. Only walking was higher in quarters lost. The percentage of possession declined in halves and quarters lost. In games lost, high speed running declined in the second half. From Q1 to Q4; PlayerLoad™, total distance, jogging, high speed running, HIR and VHIR, decreased in all games combined and in games lost. Possession frequency declined in Q4 in all games and in games won. Overall, total distance was higher in games lost and physical performance declines were more pronounced when examined by match quarter compared to half and were only apparent in games lost. Similarly, reductions in possession frequency and percentage were more evident when examined by quarter or period lost, respectively. These findings can inform the prescription of conditioning and field-training strategies to mitigate the reductions in performance observed in losing and towards the end of games

    Economic Evaluation of CPD Activities for Healthcare Professionals: A Scoping Review

    CONTEXT: Continuing Professional Development (CPD) activities for healthcare professionals are central to the optimization of patient safety and person-centred care. Although there is some evidence on the economics of healthcare professionals training, very little is known about the costs and benefits of CPD. METHODS: This study aimed to review the research evidence on economic evaluations of CPD activities for healthcare professionals. CINAHL, MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, Econlit, and Web of Science databases were used to identify articles published between 2010 and 2021. RESULTS: Of the 6791 titles identified, 119 articles met the inclusion criteria and were included in this scoping review. The majority of articles were partial economic evaluations of CPD programmes (n = 70), half were from the USA. Studies that included multiple professions were most prevalent (n = 54), followed by nurses (n = 34) and doctors (n = 23). Patient outcomes were the most commonly reported outcome (n = 51), followed by change in clinical practice (n = 38), and healthcare professionals’ knowledge gain (n = 19). CONCLUSIONS: There is an urgent call for more evidence regarding the economic evaluations of CPD. This is particularly important in view of the rising costs of healthcare globally. The majority of studies included in this review did not provide detailed information on the evaluations and many focused exclusively on the cost of CPD activities rather than outcomes

    MicroRNA-135b promotes cancer progression by acting as a downstream effector of oncogenic pathways in colon cancer

    MicroRNA deregulation is frequent in human colorectal cancers (CRCs), but little is known as to whether it represents a bystander event or actually drives tumor progression in vivo. We show that miR-135b overexpression is triggered in mice and humans by APC loss, PTEN/PI3K pathway deregulation, and SRC overexpression and promotes tumor transformation and progression. We show that miR-135b upregulation is common in sporadic and inflammatory bowel disease-associated human CRCs and correlates with tumor stage and poor clinical outcome. Inhibition of miR-135b in CRC mouse models reduces tumor growth by controlling genes involved in proliferation, invasion, and apoptosis. We identify miR-135b as a key downsteam effector of oncogenic pathways and a potential target for CRC treatment

    Somatic mutations in salivary duct carcinoma and potential therapeutic targets

    Background: Salivary duct carcinomas (SDCa) are rare highly aggressive malignancies. Most patients die from distant metastatic disease within three years of diagnosis. There are limited therapeutic options for disseminated disease. Results: 11 cases showed androgen receptor expression and 6 cases showed HER2 amplification. 6 Somatic mutations with additional available targeted therapies were identified: EGFR (p. G721A: Gefitinib), PDGFRA (p. H845Y: Imatinib and Crenolanib), PIK3CA (p. H1047R: Everolimus), ERBB2 (p. V842I: Lapatinib), HRAS (p. Q61R: Selumetinib) and KIT (p. T670I: Sorafenib). Furthermore, alterations in PTEN, PIK3CA and HRAS that alter response to androgen deprivation therapy and HER2 inhibition were also seen. Materials and Methods: Somatic mutation analysis was performed on DNA extracted from 15 archival cases of SDCa using the targeted Illumina TruSeq Amplicon Cancer Panel. Potential targetable genetic alterations were identified using extensive literature and international somatic mutation database (COSMIC, KEGG) search. Immunohistochemistry for androgen receptor and immunohistochemistry and fluorescent in situ hybridization for HER2 were also performed. Conclusions: SDCa show multiple somatic mutations, some that are amenable to pharmacologic manipulation and others that confer resistance to treatments currently under investigation. These findings emphasize the need to develop testing and treatment strategies for SDCa. © Khoo et al

    Indicators for National and Global Monitoring of Girls' Menstrual Health and Hygiene: Development of a Priority Shortlist

    Purpose Despite the importance of menstrual health and hygiene (MHH) for adolescent girls' health, education, and gender equality, few countries monitor MHH. MHH needs remain underprioritized, and progress achieved through policies, programs, or investments go unmeasured. This article reports the systematic development of an indicator shortlist to monitor adolescent girls' MHH at the national and global levels across low- and middle-income countries. Methods A core group of MHH researchers and practitioners collaborated with stakeholders from three countries with demonstrated commitment to monitoring MHH (Bangladesh, Kenya, and the Philippines), measures experts, and a global advisory group. The approach included the following: (1) define domains for monitoring MHH; (2) review and map existing indicators and measures; (3) iteratively shortlist indicators through appraising quality, feasibility, and stakeholder input; and (4) refine the shortlist and develop guidance for use. Results The shortlist comprises 21 indicators across seven domains covering menstrual materials, water, sanitation, and hygiene facilities, knowledge, discomforts and disorders, supportive social environments, menstrual health impacts, and policies. Indicators are accompanied by measures that have been tested or are expected to provide reliable data, alongside justification for their selection and guidance for use. Discussion The shortlisted indicators reflect the multisectoral collaboration necessary for ensuring girls' MHH. Uptake requires integration into monitoring systems at national and global levels. Future work remains to evaluate the performance of the indicators over time and to support their widespread use. Governments and stakeholders can use these indicators to track the progress of programs and policies, monitor unmet MHH needs, identify disparities, and set targets for improvement
