World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) guideline: anthelmintic combination products targeting nematode infections of ruminants and horses
Increasing threats from anthelmintic resistant nematode populations warrant and motivate a reappraisal of chemotherapeutic strategies for nematode control in ruminant livestock and horses. The objective of this paper is to present a guideline for the evaluation of products containing two or more constituent anthelmintic actives in a single dosage form for the treatment of nematode infections in these animals. At present, regulatory policies on the approval of such products vary across jurisdictions, and this World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (W.A.A.V.P.) guideline should enable the harmonization of the requirements. This guideline makes clear recommendations on the minimal standards needed, but stresses that registration dossiers for combination anthelmintic products submitted for approval must conform to the standards and practices already established in existing guidelines for anthelmintics
Core-shell Grain Structures and Dielectric Properties of Na0.5K0.5NbO3-LiTaO3-BiScO3 Piezoelectric Ceramics.
The origins of distinctive compositional dependence of relative permittivity, ɛr, in the Pb-free piezoelectric system (1-x)Na0.5K0.5NbO3-xLiTaO3, x≤ 10 mol.% modified with BiScO3 have been revealed using transmission electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis (TEM-EDX). As the LiTaO3 content increased the Curie peak at ~370°C in ɛr –T plots became more diffuse, and at x= 5 mol.% an additional higher temperature peak occurred. TEM-EDX analysis showed the change in dielectric properties at x= 5 mol.% was due to a change in microstructure: micron-scale grains were replaced by submicron grains exhibiting core-shell chemical segregation. The outer shell was similar to the target solid solution composition, slightly enriched in Bi, Sc and Ta, whilst the core approximated to (Na, K, Li)NbO3 and was responsible for the additional dielectric peak. A Statistical Study of Threshold Rotation Rates for the Formation of Disks around Be Stars
This paper presents a detailed statistical determination of the equatorial
rotation rates of classical Be stars. The rapid rotation of Be stars is likely
to be linked to the ejection of gas that forms dense circumstellar disks. The
physical origins of these disks are not understood, though it is generally
believed that the ability to spin up matter into a Keplerian disk depends on
how close the stellar rotation speed is to the critical speed at which the
centrifugal force cancels gravity. There has been recent disagreement between
the traditional idea that Be stars rotate between 50 and 80 percent of their
critical speeds and new ideas (inspired by the tendency for gravity darkening
to mask rapid rotation at the equator) that their rotation may be very nearly
critical. This paper utilizes Monte Carlo forward modeling to simulate
distributions of the projected rotation speed (v sin i), taking into account
gravity darkening, limb darkening, and observational uncertainties. A
chi-squared minimization procedure was used to find the distribution parameters
that best reproduce observed v sin i distributions from R. Yudin's database.
Early-type (O7e-B2e) Be stars were found to exhibit a roughly uniform spread of
intrinsic rotation speed that extends from 40 to 60 percent up to 100 percent
of critical. Late-type (B3e-A0e) Be stars exhibit progressively narrower ranges
of rotation speed as the effective temperature decreases; the lower limit rises
to reach critical rotation for the coolest Be stars. The derived lower limits
on equatorial rotation speed represent conservative threshold rotation rates
for the onset of the Be phenomenon. The significantly subcritical speeds found
for early-type Be stars represent strong constraints on physical models of

Multi-Element Abundance Measurements from Medium-Resolution Spectra. IV. Alpha Element Distributions in Milky Way Dwarf Satellite Galaxies
We derive the star formation histories of eight dwarf spheroidal (dSph) Milky
Way satellite galaxies from their alpha element abundance patterns. Nearly 3000
stars from our previously published catalog (Paper II) comprise our data set.
The average [alpha/Fe] ratios for all dSphs follow roughly the same path with
increasing [Fe/H]. We do not observe the predicted knees in the [alpha/Fe] vs.
[Fe/H] diagram, corresponding to the metallicity at which Type Ia supernovae
begin to explode. Instead, we find that Type Ia supernova ejecta contribute to
the abundances of all but the most metal-poor ([Fe/H] < -2.5) stars. We have
also developed a chemical evolution model that tracks the star formation rate,
Types II and Ia supernova explosions, and supernova feedback. Without metal
enhancement in the supernova blowout, massive amounts of gas loss define the
history of all dSphs except Fornax, the most luminous in our sample. All six of
the best-fit model parameters correlate with dSph luminosity but not with
velocity dispersion, half-light radius, or Galactocentric distance.Comment: 28 pages, 14 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ; very minor

Open Clusters as Galactic Disk Tracers: I. Project Motivation, Cluster Membership and Bulk Three-Dimensional Kinematics
We have begun a survey of the chemical and dynamical properties of the Milky
Way disk as traced by open star clusters. In this first contribution, the
general goals of our survey are outlined and the strengths and limitations of
using star clusters as a Galactic disk tracer sample are discussed. We also
present medium resolution (R ~ 15,0000) spectroscopy of open cluster stars
obtained with the Hydra multi-object spectrographs on the Cerro Tololo
Inter-American Observatory 4-m and WIYN 3.5-m telescopes. Here we use these
data to determine the radial velocities of 3436 stars in the fields of open
clusters within about 3 kpc, with specific attention to stars having proper
motions in the Tycho-2 catalog. Additional radial velocity members (without
Tycho-2 proper motions) that can be used for future studies of these clusters
were also identified. The radial velocities, proper motions, and the angular
distance of the stars from cluster center are used to derive cluster membership
probabilities for stars in each cluster field using a non-parametric approach,
and the cluster members so-identified are used, in turn, to derive the reliable
bulk three-dimensional motion for 66 of 71 targeted open clusters. The high
probability cluster members that we identify help to clarify the
color-magnitude sequences for many of the clusters, and are prime targets for
future echelle resolution spectroscopy as well as astrometric study with the

Deviations from a uniform period spacing of gravity modes in a massive star
The life of a star is dominantly determined by the physical processes in the stellar interior. Unfortunately, we still have a poor understanding of how the stellar gas mixes near the stellar core, preventing precise predictions of stellar evolution. The unknown nature of the mixing processes as well as the extent of the central mixed region is particularly problematic for massive stars. Oscillations in stars with masses a few times that of the Sun offer a unique opportunity to disentangle the nature of various mixing processes, through the distinct signature they leave on period spacings in the gravity mode spectrum. Here we report the detection of numerous gravity modes in a young star with a mass of about seven solar masses. The mean period spacing allows us to estimate the extent of the convective core, and the clear periodic deviation from the mean constrains the location of the chemical transition zone to be at about 10 per cent of the radius and rules out a clear-cut profile.Peer reviewe
Efficacy and safety of sarolaner (Simparica®) in the treatment and control of naturally occurring flea infestations in dogs presented as veterinary patients in Australia
Abstract Background The efficacy and safety of a novel isoxazoline compound, sarolaner (Simparica®, Zoetis) and spinosad (Comfortis®, Elanco) as a positive control were evaluated for the treatment and control of natural flea infestations on dogs in two randomised, blinded, multi-centric clinical trials conducted in 11 veterinary clinics in northeastern and southeastern states of Australia. Methods A total of 162 client-owned dogs (80 in northern study and 82 in southern study) from 105 households were enrolled. Each household was randomly allocated to receive either sarolaner (Simparica®, Zoetis) or spinosad (Comfortis®, Elanco). Dogs were dosed on Days 0, 30 and 60 and physical examinations and flea counts were conducted on Days 0, 14, 30, 60 and 90. Efficacy assessments were based on the percentage reduction in live flea counts post-treatment compared to Day 0. Results In the northern study, at enrolment, primary dogs had flea counts ranging from 5 to 772. At the first efficacy assessment on Day 14, sarolaner resulted in 99.3% mean reduction in live flea counts relative to Day 0, compared to 94.6% in the spinosad group. On Day 30, the sarolaner-treated group had mean efficacy of 99.2% compared to 95.7% in the spinosad-treated group, and on days 60 and 90, both groups had mean efficacies of ≥ 98.8%. In the southern study, at enrolment, primary dogs had flea counts ranging from 5 to 156. Both sarolaner and spinosad resulted in ≥ 96.7% mean reduction in live flea counts on Day 14. On Day 30, the sarolaner-treated group had mean efficacy of 99.5% compared to 89.7% in the spinosad-treated group, and on days 60 and 90, both groups had mean efficacies of ≥ 98.6%. No treatment-related adverse events were observed in either study. Conclusions A single monthly dose of sarolaner (Simparica®) administered orally at 2–4 mg/kg for three consecutive months was well tolerated and provided excellent efficacy against natural infestations of fleas under a range of Australian field conditions including different climatic and housing conditions. Evaluation of the efficacy of sarolaner (Simparica®) in the prevention of babesiosis in dogs
Abstract Background Canine babesiosis is a clinically significant emerging vector-borne disease caused among others by the protozoan Babesia canis. The efficacy of sarolaner (Simparica®; Zoetis; at the minimum recommended label dose of 2.0 mg per kg bodyweight) in the prevention of babesiosis was evaluated in twenty-four dogs randomly allocated to either a placebo-treated group or one of two sarolaner-treated groups. At 21 or 28 days after treatment administration, dogs were infested with 50 ± 4 Dermacentor reticulatus ticks of which 25% were confirmed to be infected with Babesia canis. Blood samples were collected from each dog prior to tick infestation and weekly thereafter until 49 days after infestation. The blood was assayed for B. canis antibodies using an indirect immunofluorescence test (IFAT) and for B. canis DNA by PCR assay. A dog was a priori defined as B. canis-positive if it tested positive by both IFAT and PCR at any time during the study. Results No treatment-related adverse reactions were recorded during the study. All placebo-treated animals displayed clinical signs due to babesiosis and tested positive on both IFAT and PCR. None of the sarolaner-treated animals displayed any clinical symptoms or tested positive on both IFAT and PCR, resulting in a 100% efficacy in the prevention of canine babesiosis (P = 0.0002). Conclusion When given 21 or 28 days before tick infestation, a single treatment with sarolaner at the minimum recommended label dose of 2.0 mg per kg body weight prevented the transmission of B. canis by D. reticulatus to dogs
