    Current therapies for Chagas' disease, leishmaniasis and tuberculosis are unsatisfactory because of the failure rates, significant toxicity and/or drug resistance. In this study, the compound 3-[4'-bromo-(1,1'-biphenyl)-4-yl]-N,N-dimethyl-3-(2-thienyl)-2-propen-1-amine (IV) was synthesized and its trypanocidal, leishmanicidal and antimycobacterial activities were investigated. The cytotoxicity was determined on V79 cells with three endpoints: nucleic acid content, 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide reduction and Neutral Red uptake. This compound was active against different species of mycobacteria and different life cycle stages of Trypanosoma cruzi. In experiments with trypomastigotes performed at 4degreesC in the presence of blood, the activity was 8.8-fold more active than the standard drug, Crystal Violet. Higher activity was achieved against Leishmania amazonensis, with an ED50/24 h of 3.0 +/- 0.3 mumol/L. The effect against trypanosomatids, which suggests high activity of compound IV against promastigotes of L. amazonensis and amastigotes of T. cruzi, stimulated further studies in vitro with amastigotes interiorized in macrophages and with in vivo models. Our results indicate that mammalian V79 cells are less susceptible to the action of compound IV than promastigotes of L. amazonensis (8.0-13.3-fold) and axenic amastigotes of T. cruzi (3.5-5.9-fold).o TEXTO COMPLETO DESTE ARTIGO, ESTARÁ DISPONÍVEL À PARTIR DE AGOSTO DE 2015.50562963

    São apresentados quatro casos de leishmaniose em pacientes com SIDA, sendo dois de leishmaniose visceral e dois com forma cutâneo-mucosa. Lesões cutâneas e de mucosa oral, disseminadas, estavam presentes nos pacientes com a forma tegumentar da doença. Febre prolongada, hepatoesplenomegalia e pancitopenia foram as manifestações principais da forma visceral. A contagem de linfócitos T CD4+ era baixa em todos os casos. A pesquisa de leishmanias foi positiva no aspirado de medula óssea e na biópsia de lesões cutâneas e mucosas. Os pacientes responderam ao tratamento com antimoniais pentavalentes e com a anfotericina B. Poucos casos de coinfecção leishmaniose e HIV têm sido descritos em nosso meio. Apesar da ampla expansão de ambas, até agora suas áreas de distribuição geográfica teve pouca superposição. Os autores recomendam a inclusão desta parasitose no diagnostico diferencial das doenças oportunistas que acometem indivíduos com SIDA.<br>Few cases of concurrent leishmaniasis and HIV infection have been reported in Brazil, despite both infections being in expansion. Two cases of visceral leishmaniasis and two cases of mucocutaneous leishmaniasis are discussed. Disseminated skin and oral lesions were found in the patients with the cutaneous form of the disease. Prolonged fever, hepatosplenomegaly and pancytopenia were the main manifestations of the visceral form. The CD4 T lymphocyte count was low in all cases. Direct examination of bone marrow aspirate for leishmania and biopsy of cutaneous lesions are the techniques of choice to confirm diagnosis. Pentavalent antimonials and amphotericin B are preferred drugs for the treatment of leishmaniasis, including patients with AIDS. The authors recommend the inclusion of this parasitosis in the differential diagnosis of opportunistic diseases in patients with AIDS

    The term propolis comes from two Greek words, pro (which means for or in defence of) and polis (which means the city); thus, propolis means in defence of the city or beehive. Propolis is a sticky resinous substance, which is gathered from buds and the bark of trees. It is also known as "bee glue" as bees use it to cover surfaces, seal holes and close gaps in their hives, thus providing a sterile environment that protects them from microbes and spore-producing organisms, including fungi and molds. It can be considered to be a potent chemical weapon against bacteria, viruses, and other pathogenic microorganisms that may invade the bee colony. Also, bees use propolis as an embalming substance, to mummify invaders such as other insects, that have been killed and are too heavy to remove from the colony. Thus, propolis is important for bee health but it also has activity against many human diseases. It is a powerful anti-oxidant and can modulate the activity of reactive oxygen species within the human body. The most studied aspect of propolis is its anti-bacterial activity, which is almost always present at a moderate to high level depending on the exact type of propolis. It is in general more active against Gram positive than Gram negative bacteria, but activity against Gram negative bacteria has been observed. Propolis has been found to be active against a range of viruses and also is almost always active against protozoa such as Tryanosoma brucei and Leishmania donovani. Propolis also shows activity against cardiovascular diseases and diabetes and has immunomodulatory effects. Anti-cancer activity has also been observed. In summary, propolis is remarkable for its range of biological activities and for the variety of its chemical composition. It may be of great importance both to bees and humans
