Forage selection preferences of experienced cows and naïve heifers grazing native tallgrass range during winter

Description of the botanical composition of a grazed diet is vital in that regard. Microhistological
analysis of fecal material has been used for estimating the botanical composition
of wild and domestic ungulate diets since first described by Baumgartner and
Martin in 1939.
Little research has been conducted on the diet selection preferences of multiparous beef
cows compared to primiparous beef cows. We hypothesized that foraging strategies
change as cows age. To that end, our objective was to characterize differences in diet
selection between experienced multiparous and naïve primiparous beef cows grazing
dormant, native tallgrass pastures during winter

Putative ammonia-oxidizing Crenarchaeota in suboxic waters of the Black Sea : a basin-wide ecological study using 16S ribosomal and functional genes and membrane lipids

The definitive version was published in Environmental Microbiology 9 (2007): 1001-1016, doi:10.1111/j.1462-2920.2006.01227.x.Within the upper 400 m at western, central, and eastern stations in the world’s largest stratified basin, the Black Sea, we studied the qualitative and quantitative distribution of putative nitrifying Archaea based on their genetic markers (16S rDNA, amoA encoding for the alfa-subunit of archaeal ammonia monooxygenase), and crenarchaeol, the specific glycerol diphytanyl glycerol tetraether (GDGT) of pelagic Crenarchaeota within the Group I.1a. Marine Crenarchaeota were the most abundant Archaea (up to 98% of the total archaeal 16S rDNA copies) in the suboxic layers with oxygen levels as low as 1 μM including layers where previously anammox bacteria were described (Kuypers et al., 2003). Different marine crenarchaeotal phylotypes (both 16S rDNA and amoA) were found at the upper part of the suboxic zone as compared to the base of the suboxic zone and the upper 15-30 m of the anoxic waters with prevailing sulfide concentrations of up to 30 μM. Crenarchaeol concentrations were higher in the sulfidic chemocline as compared to the suboxic zone. These results indicate an abundance of putative nitrifying Archaea at very low oxygen levels within the Black Sea and might form an important source of nitrite for the anammox reaction.This work was supported by a grant from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (VENI Innovational Research Grant nr. 813.13.001 to MJLC), an U. Anomalous diffusion with absorption: Exact time-dependent solutions
Recently, analytical solutions of a nonlinear Fokker-Planck equation
describing anomalous diffusion with an external linear force were found using a
non extensive thermostatistical Ansatz. We have extended these solutions to the
case when an homogeneous absorption process is also present. Some peculiar
aspects of the interrelation between the deterministic force, the nonlinear

The influence of gene expression time delays on Gierer-Meinhardt pattern formation systems
There are numerous examples of morphogen gradients controlling long range signalling in developmental and cellular systems. The prospect of two such interacting morphogens instigating long range self-organisation in biological systems via a Turing bifurcation has been explored, postulated, or implicated in the context of numerous developmental processes. However, modelling investigations of cellular systems typically neglect the influence of gene expression on such dynamics, even though transcription and translation are observed to be important in morphogenetic systems. In particular, the influence of gene expression on a large class of Turing bifurcation models, namely those with pure kinetics such as the Gierer–Meinhardt system, is unexplored. Our investigations demonstrate that the behaviour of the Gierer–Meinhardt model profoundly changes on the inclusion of gene expression dynamics and is sensitive to the sub-cellular details of gene expression. Features such as concentration blow up, morphogen oscillations and radical sensitivities to the duration of gene expression are observed and, at best, severely restrict the possible parameter spaces for feasible biological behaviour. These results also indicate that the behaviour of Turing pattern formation systems on the inclusion of gene expression time delays may provide a means of distinguishing between possible forms of interaction kinetics. Finally, this study also emphasises that sub-cellular and gene expression dynamics should not be simply neglected in models of long range biological pattern formation via morphogens
Milagrito: a TeV air-shower array
Milagrito, a large, covered water-Cherenkov detector, was the world's first
air-shower-particle detector sensitive to cosmic gamma rays below 1 TeV. It
served as a prototype for the Milagro detector and operated from February 1997
to May 1998. This paper gives a description of Milagrito, a summary of the
operating experience, and early results that demonstrate the capabilities of

Enhanced Group Analysis and Exact Solutions of Variable Coefficient Semilinear Diffusion Equations with a Power Source
A new approach to group classification problems and more general
investigations on transformational properties of classes of differential
equations is proposed. It is based on mappings between classes of differential
equations, generated by families of point transformations. A class of variable
coefficient (1+1)-dimensional semilinear reaction-diffusion equations of the
general form () is studied from the
symmetry point of view in the framework of the approach proposed. The singular
subclass of the equations with is singled out. The group classifications
of the entire class, the singular subclass and their images are performed with
respect to both the corresponding (generalized extended) equivalence groups and
all point transformations. The set of admissible transformations of the imaged
class is exhaustively described in the general case . The procedure of
classification of nonclassical symmetries, which involves mappings between
classes of differential equations, is discussed. Wide families of new exact
solutions are also constructed for equations from the classes under
consideration by the classical method of Lie reductions and by generation of
new solutions from known ones for other equations with point transformations of
different kinds (such as additional equivalence transformations and mappings

Trends in the Statistical Assessment of Reliability
Changes in technology have had and will continue to have a strong effect on changes in the area of statistical assessment of reliability data. These changes include higher levels of integration in electronics, improvements in measurement technology and the deployment of sensors and smart chips into more products, dramatically improved computing power and storage technology, and the development of new, powerful statistical methods for graphics, inference, and experimental design and reliability test planning. This paper traces some of the history of the development of statistical methods for reliability assessment and makes some predictions about the future
Subleading-twist effects in single-spin asymmetries in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering on a longitudinally polarized hydrogen target
Single-spin asymmetries in the semi-inclusive production of charged pions in
deep-inelastic scattering from transversely and longitudinally polarized proton
targets are combined to evaluate the subleading-twist contribution to the
longitudinal case. This contribution is significantly positive for (\pi^+)
mesons and dominates the asymmetries on a longitudinally polarized target
previously measured by \hermes. The subleading-twist contribution for (\pi^-)
mesons is found to be small
