Evolutionary relationships between Rhynchosporium lolii sp. nov. and other Rhynchosporium species on grass.

This study used molecular fingerprinting, multilocus DNA sequence data, conidial morphology, host range tests and scanning electron microscopy to investigate the relationship between Rhynchosporium species on ryegrasses, both economically important forage grasses and common wild grasses in many cereal growing areas, and other plant species. Two different types of Rhynchosporium were found on ryegrasses in the UK. Firstly, there were isolates of R. commune that were pathogenic to both barley and Italian ryegrass. Secondly, there were isolates of a new species, here named R. lolii, that were pathogenic only to ryegrass species. R. lolii was most closely related to R. orthosporum, but exhibited clear molecular, morphological and host range differences. The species was estimated to have diverged from R. orthosporum ca. 5735 years before the present. The colonisation strategy of all of the different Rhynchosporium species involved extensive hyphal growth in the sub-cuticular regions of the leaves. Finally, new species-specific PCR diagnostic tests were developed that could distinguish between these five closely related Rhynchosporium species.Peer reviewedFinal Published versio
Spacetime Instanton Corrections in 4D String Vacua - The Seesaw Mechanism for D-Brane Models
We systematically investigate instanton corrections from wrapped Euclidean
D-branes to the matter field superpotential of various classes of N=1
supersymmetric D-brane models in four dimensions. Both gauge invariance and the
counting of fermionic zero modes provide strong constraints on the allowed
non-perturbative superpotential couplings. We outline how the complete
instanton computation boils down to the computation of open string disc
diagrams for boundary changing operators multiplied by a one-loop vacuum
diagram. For concreteness we focus on E2-instanton effects in Type IIA vacua
with intersecting D6-branes, however the same structure emerges for Type IIB
and heterotic vacua. The instantons wrapping rigid cycles can potentially
destabilise the vacuum or generate perturbatively absent matter couplings such
as proton decay operators, mu-parameter or right-handed neutrino Majorana mass
terms. The latter allow the realization of the seesaw mechanism for MSSM-like

Dietary garlic and hip osteoarthritis: evidence of a protective effect and putative mechanism of action
Background Patterns of food intake and prevalent osteoarthritis of the hand, hip, and knee were studied using the twin design to limit the effect of confounding factors. Compounds found in associated food groups were further studied in vitro. Methods Cross-sectional study conducted in a large population-based volunteer cohort of twins. Food intake was evaluated using the Food Frequency Questionnaire; OA was determined using plain radiographs. Analyses were adjusted for age, BMI and physical activity. Subsequent in vitro studies examined the effects of allium-derived compounds on the expression of matrix-degrading proteases in SW1353 chondrosarcoma cells. Results Data were available, depending on phenotype, for 654-1082 of 1086 female twins (median age 58.9 years; range 46-77). Trends in dietary analysis revealed a specific pattern of dietary intake, that high in fruit and vegetables, showed an inverse association with hip OA (p = 0.022). Consumption of 'non-citrus fruit' (p = 0.015) and 'alliums' (p = 0.029) had the strongest protective effect. Alliums contain diallyl disulphide which was shown to abrogate cytokine-induced matrix metalloproteinase expression. Conclusions Studies of diet are notorious for their confounding by lifestyle effects. While taking account of BMI, the data show an independent effect of a diet high in fruit and vegetables, suggesting it to be protective against radiographic hip OA. Furthermore, diallyl disulphide, a compound found in garlic and other alliums, represses the expression of matrix-degrading proteases in chondrocyte-like cells, providing a potential mechanism of action
A specific case in the classification of woods by FTIR and chemometric: discrimination of Fagales from Malpighiales
Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopic data was used to classify wood samples from nine species within the Fagales and Malpighiales using a range of multivariate statistical methods. Taxonomic classification of the family Fagaceae and Betulaceae from Angiosperm Phylogenetic System Classification (APG II System) was successfully performed using supervised pattern recognition techniques. A methodology for wood sample discrimination was developed using both sapwood and heartwood samples. Ten and eight biomarkers emerged from the dataset to discriminate order and family, respectively. In the species studied FTIR in combination with multivariate analysis highlighted significant chemical differences in hemicelluloses, cellulose and guaiacyl (lignin) and shows promise as a suitable approach for wood sample classification
CD152 (CTLA-4) Determines CD4 T Cell Migration In Vitro and In Vivo
BACKGROUND:Migration of antigen-experienced T cells to secondary lymphoid organs and the site of antigenic-challenge is a mandatory prerequisite for the precise functioning of adaptive immune responses. The surface molecule CD152 (CTLA-4) is mostly considered as a negative regulator of T cell activation during immune responses. It is currently unknown whether CD152 can also influence chemokine-driven T cell migration. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS:We analyzed the consequences of CD152 signaling on Th cell migration using chemotaxis assays in vitro and radioactive cell tracking in vivo. We show here that the genetic and serological inactivation of CD152 in Th1 cells reduced migration towards CCL4, CXCL12 and CCL19, but not CXCL9, in a G-protein dependent manner. In addition, retroviral transduction of CD152 cDNA into CD152 negative cells restored Th1 cell migration. Crosslinking of CD152 together with CD3 and CD28 stimulation on activated Th1 cells increased expression of the chemokine receptors CCR5 and CCR7, which in turn enhanced cell migration. Using sensitive liposome technology, we show that mature dendritic cells but not activated B cells were potent at inducing surface CD152 expression and the CD152-mediated migration-enhancing signals. Importantly, migration of CD152 positive Th1 lymphocytes in in vivo experiments increased more than 200% as compared to CD152 negative counterparts showing that indeed CD152 orchestrates specific migration of selected Th1 cells to sites of inflammation and antigenic challenge in vivo. CONCLUSIONS/SIGNIFICANCE:We show here, that CD152 signaling does not just silence cells, but selects individual ones for migration. This novel activity of CD152 adds to the already significant role of CD152 in controlling peripheral immune responses by allowing T cells to localize correctly during infection. It also suggests that interference with CD152 signaling provides a tool for altering the cellular composition at sites of inflammation and antigenic challenge
The effective action of D6-branes in N=1 type IIA orientifolds
We use a Kaluza-Klein reduction to compute the low-energy effective action
for the massless modes of a spacetime-filling D6-brane wrapped on a special
Lagrangian 3-cycle of a type IIA Calabi-Yau orientifold. The modifications to
the characteristic data of the N=1 bulk orientifold theory in the presence of a
D6-brane are analysed by studying the underlying Type IIA supergravity coupled
to the brane worldvolume in the democratic formulation and performing a
detailed dualisation procedure. The N=1 chiral coordinates are found to be in
agreement with expectations from mirror symmetry. We work out the Kahler
potential for the chiral superfields as well as the gauge kinetic functions for
the bulk and the brane gauge multiplets including the kinetic mixing between
the two. The scalar potential resulting from the dualisation procedure can be
formally interpreted in terms of a superpotential. Finally, the gauging of the
Peccei-Quinn shift symmetries of the complex structure multiplets reproduces
the D-term potential enforcing the calibration condition for special Lagrangian

How does gender influence the recognition of cardiovascular risk and adherence to self-care recommendations? : a study in polish primary care
Background:
Studies have shown a correlation between gender and an ability to change lifestyle to reduce the risk of disease. However, the results of these studies are ambiguous, especially where a healthy lifestyle is concerned. Additionally, health behaviors are strongly modified by culture and the environment. Psychological factors also substantially affect engagement with disease-related lifestyle interventions. This study aimed to examine whether there are differences between men and women in the frequency of health care behavior for the purpose of reducing cardiovascular risk (CVR), as well as cognitive appraisal of this type of risk. We also aimed to identify the psychological predictors of engaging in recommended behavior for reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease after providing information about this risk in men and women.
Methods:
A total of 134 consecutive eligible patients in a family practice entered a longitudinal study. At initial consultation, the individual’s CVR and associated health burden was examined, and preventive measures were recommended by the physician. Self-care behavior, cognitive appraisal of risk, and coping styles were then assessed using psychological questionnaires. Six months after the initial data collection, the frequency of subjects’ self-care behavior was examined.
Results:
We found an increase in health care behavior after providing information regarding the rate of CVR in both sexes; this increase was greater for women than for men. Women followed self-care guidelines more often than men, particularly for preventive measures and dietary advice. Women were more inclined to recognize their CVR as a challenge. Coping style, cognitive appraisal, age, level of health behaviors at baseline and CVR values accounted for 48% of the variance in adherence to self-care guidelines in women and it was 52% in men. In women, total risk of CVD values were most important, while in men, cognitive appraisal of harm/loss was most important.
Conclusions:
Different predictors of acquisition of health behavior are encountered in men and women. Our results suggest that gender-adjusted motivation models influencing the recognition process need to be considered to optimize compliance in patients with CVR
Environmental Factors in the Relapse and Recurrence of Inflammatory Bowel Disease:A Review of the Literature
The causes of relapse in patients with Crohn's disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are largely unknown. This paper reviews the epidemiological and clinical data on how medications (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, estrogens and antibiotics), lifestyle factors (smoking, psychological stress, diet and air pollution) may precipitate clinical relapses and recurrence. Potential biological mechanisms include: increasing thrombotic tendency, imbalances in prostaglandin synthesis, alterations in the composition of gut microbiota, and mucosal damage causing increased permeability
Migration of Star Clusters and Nuclear Rings
Star clusters that form in nuclear rings appear to be at slightly larger
radii than the gas. We argue that the star clusters move out from the gas in
which they are formed because of satellite-disk tidal interactions. In
calculating the dynamics of this star cluster and gas ring system, we include
the effects of dynamical friction of the background stars in the host galaxy on
the star cluster, and inflowing gas along the bar onto the nuclear ring at the
two contact points. We show that the final separation is of the order of the
Hill radius of the nuclear ring, which is typically 20-30% of its radius.
Massive star clusters can reach half of this separation very quickly and
produce a factor of a few enhancement in the gas surface density. If this leads
to star formation in addition to the (ongoing) formation of star clusters near
the contact points, a possible (initial) azimuthal age gradient may become
diluted or even disappear. Finally, if the star cluster are massive and/or
numerous enough, we expect the nuclear ring to migrate inward, away from the
(possibly) associated (inner) Lindblad resonance. We discuss how these

hp-adaptive Galerkin Time Stepping Methods for Nonlinear Initial Value Problems
This work is concerned with the derivation of an a posteriori error estimator for Galerkin approximations to nonlinear initial value problems with an emphasis on finite-time existence in the context of blow-up. The structure of the derived estimator leads naturally to the development of both h and hp versions of an adaptive algorithm designed to approximate the blow-up time. The adaptive algorithms are then applied in a series of numerical experiments, and the rate of convergence to the blow-up time is investigated
