    Perspectives on utilization of edible coatings and nano-laminate coatings for extension of postharvest storage of fruits and vegetables

    It is known that in developing countries, a large quantity of fruit and vegetable losses results at postharvest and processing stages due to poor or scarce storage technology and mishandling during harvest. The use of new and innovative technologies for reducing postharvest losses is a requirement that has not been fully covered. The use of edible coatings (mainly based on biopolymers) as a postharvest technique for agricultural commodities has offered biodegradable alternatives in order to solve problems (e.g., microbiological growth) during produce storage. However, biopolymer-based coatings can present some disadvantages such as: poor mechanical properties (e.g., lipids) or poor water vapor barrier properties (e.g., polysaccharides), thus requiring the development of new alternatives to solve these drawbacks. Recently, nanotechnology has emerged as a promising tool in the food processing industry, providing new insights about postharvest technologies on produce storage. Nanotechnological approaches can contribute through the design of functional packing materials with lower amounts of bioactive ingredients, better gas and mechanical properties and with reduced impact on the sensorial qualities of the fruits and vegetables. This work reviews some of the main factors involved in postharvest losses and new technologies for extension of postharvest storage of fruits and vegetables, focused on perspective uses of edible coatings and nano-laminate coatings.María L.     Global age-sex-specific fertility, mortality, healthy life expectancy (HALE), and population estimates in 204 countries and territories, 1950-2019 : a comprehensive demographic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

    Background: Accurate and up-to-date assessment of demographic metrics is crucial for understanding a wide range of social, economic, and public health issues that affect populations worldwide. The Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2019 produced updated and comprehensive demographic assessments of the key indicators of fertility, mortality, migration, and population for 204 countries and territories and selected subnational locations from 1950 to 2019. Methods: 8078 country-years of vital registration and sample registration data, 938 surveys, 349 censuses, and 238 other sources were identified and used to estimate age-specific fertility. Spatiotemporal Gaussian process regression (ST-GPR) was used to generate age-specific fertility rates for 5-year age groups between ages 15 and 49 years. With extensions to age groups 10–14 and 50–54 years, the total fertility rate (TFR) was then aggregated using the estimated age-specific fertility between ages 10 and 54 years. 7417 sources were used for under-5 mortality estimation and 7355 for adult mortality. ST-GPR was used to synthesise data sources after correction for known biases. Adult mortality was measured as the probability of death between ages 15 and 60 years based on vital registration, sample registration, and sibling histories, and was also estimated using ST-GPR. HIV-free life tables were then estimated using estimates of under-5 and adult mortality rates using a relational model life table system created for GBD, which closely tracks observed age-specific mortality rates from complete vital registration when available. Independent estimates of HIV-specific mortality generated by an epidemiological analysis of HIV prevalence surveys and antenatal clinic serosurveillance and other sources were incorporated into the estimates in countries with large epidemics. Annual and single-year age estimates of net migration and population for each country and territory were generated using a Bayesian hierarchical cohort component model that analysed estimated age-specific fertility and mortality rates along with 1250 censuses and 747 population registry years. We classified location-years into seven categories on the basis of the natural rate of increase in population (calculated by subtracting the crude death rate from the crude birth rate) and the net migration rate. We computed healthy life expectancy (HALE) using years lived with disability (YLDs) per capita, life tables, and standard demographic methods. Uncertainty was propagated throughout the demographic estimation process, including fertility, mortality, and population, with 1000 draw-level estimates produced for each metric. Findings: The global TFR decreased from 2·72 (95% uncertainty interval [UI] 2·66–2·79) in 2000 to 2·31 (2·17–2·46) in 2019. Global annual livebirths increased from 134·5 million (131·5–137·8) in 2000 to a peak of 139·6 million (133·0–146·9) in 2016. Global livebirths then declined to 135·3 million (127·2–144·1) in 2019. Of the 204 countries and territories included in this study, in 2019, 102 had a TFR lower than 2·1, which is considered a good approximation of replacement-level fertility. All countries in sub-Saharan Africa had TFRs above replacement level in 2019 and accounted for 27·1% (95% UI 26·4–27·8) of global livebirths. Global life expectancy at birth increased from 67·2 years (95% UI 66·8–67·6) in 2000 to 73·5 years (72·8–74·3) in 2019. The total number of deaths increased from 50·7 million (49·5–51·9) in 2000 to 56·5 million (53·7–59·2) in 2019. Under-5 deaths declined from 9·6 million (9·1–10·3) in 2000 to 5·0 million (4·3–6·0) in 2019. Global population increased by 25·7%, from 6·2 billion (6·0–6·3) in 2000 to 7·7 billion (7·5–8·0) in 2019. In 2019, 34 countries had negative natural rates of increase; in 17 of these, the population declined because immigration was not sufficient to counteract the negative rate of decline. Globally, HALE increased from 58·6 years (56·1–60·8) in 2000 to 63·5 years (60·8–66·1) in 2019. HALE increased in 202 of 204 countries and territories between 2000 and 2019

    Global burden of cardiovascular diseases and risk factors, 1990–2019: update from the GBD 2019 study

    Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs), principally ischemic heart disease (IHD) and stroke, are the leading cause of global mortality and a major contributor to disability. This paper reviews the magnitude of total CVD burden, including 13 underlying causes of cardiovascular death and 9 related risk factors, using estimates from the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) Study 2019. GBD, an ongoing multinational collaboration to provide comparable and consistent estimates of population health over time, used all available population-level data sources on incidence, prevalence, case fatality, mortality, and health risks to produce estimates for 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. Prevalent cases of total CVD nearly doubled from 271 million (95% uncertainty interval [UI]: 257 to 285 million) in 1990 to 523 million (95% UI: 497 to 550 million) in 2019, and the number of CVD deaths steadily increased from 12.1 million (95% UI:11.4 to 12.6 million) in 1990, reaching 18.6 million (95% UI: 17.1 to 19.7 million) in 2019. The global trends for disability-adjusted life years (DALYs) and years of life lost also increased significantly, and years lived with disability doubled from 17.7 million (95% UI: 12.9 to 22.5 million) to 34.4 million (95% UI:24.9 to 43.6 million) over that period. The total number of DALYs due to IHD has risen steadily since 1990, reaching 182 million (95% UI: 170 to 194 million) DALYs, 9.14 million (95% UI: 8.40 to 9.74 million) deaths in the year 2019, and 197 million (95% UI: 178 to 220 million) prevalent cases of IHD in 2019. The total number of DALYs due to stroke has risen steadily since 1990, reaching 143 million (95% UI: 133 to 153 million) DALYs, 6.55 million (95% UI: 6.00 to 7.02 million) deaths in the year 2019, and 101 million (95% UI: 93.2 to 111 million) prevalent cases of stroke in 2019. Cardiovascular diseases remain the leading cause of disease burden in the world. CVD burden continues its decades-long rise for almost all countries outside high-income countries, and alarmingly, the age-standardized rate of CVD has begun to rise in some locations where it was previously declining in high-income countries. There is an urgent need to focus on implementing existing cost-effective policies and interventions if the world is to meet the targets for Sustainable Development Goal 3 and achieve a 30% reduction in premature mortality due to noncommunicable diseases

    Effect of pH and Carbon Source on Phosphate Solubilization by Bacterial Strains in Pikovskaya Medium

    Phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) transform precipitated inorganic phosphorus into soluble orthophosphates. This study evaluated the efficiency of tricalcium and iron phosphate solubilization in Pikovskaya medium using five bacterial strains (A1, A2, A3, A5, and A6) cultured in acidic and alkaline pH levels. The bacterial strain that proved to be more efficient for P solubilization and was tolerant to pH variations was selected for assessing bacterial growth and P solubilization with glucose and sucrose in the culture medium. The bacterial strains were identified through 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Pseudomonas libanensis A1, Pseudomonas libanensis (A2), Bacillus pumilus (A3), Pseudomonas libanensis (A5), and Bacillus siamensis (A6). These five bacterial strains grew, tolerated pH changes, and solubilized inorganic phosphorus. The bacterial strain A3 solubilized FePO4 (4 mg L−1) and Ca3(PO4)2 (50 mg L−1). P solubilization was assayed with glucose and sucrose as carbon sources for A3 (Bacillus pumilus MN100586). After four culture days, Ca3(PO4)2 was solubilized, reaching 246 mg L−1 with sucrose in culture media. Using glucose as a carbon source, FePO4 was solubilized and reached 282 mg L−1 in six culture days. Our findings were: Pseudomonas libanensis, and Bacillus siamensis, as new bacteria, can be reported as P solubilizers with tolerance to acidic or alkaline pH levels. The bacterial strain B. pumilus grew using two sources of inorganic phosphorus and carbon, and it tolerated pH changes. For that reason, it is an ideal candidate for inorganic phosphorus solubilization and future production as a biofertilizer

    Metabolic and productive behavior of lams in natural and artificial lactation

    The objective of this study was to compare the metabolic and productive behavior of lambs with natural lactation (NL) and artificial lactation (AL). The study included 41 lambs divided in two treatments: 19 lambs with NL sucked ad libitum from their mothers and 22 lambs with AL that were separated from their mothers at 24 hours after born in order to be fed with milk replacer (105g in 3 Intakes/day). All 41 lambs were fed (creep feeding), weighed (BW), and blood samples were collected by jugular venipuncture at 1, 8, 15, 29 and 43 days of age (sampling) (SD). The serum metabolites quantified were Total Protein (TP), Urea (UR), Glucose (GL), and Triglycerides (TG). The statistic analysis was a PROCMIXED and PROCCORR from SAS. There was significant difference between treatments in the variables UR with 4.1 and 3.52 mg/dL in BW with 6.09 and 4.73 kg in NL and AL respectively (P<0.05). There was observed negative correlation between SD (sampling day) with TP and GL, and positive correlation between SD with UR and TP (P<0.05). GL and TG showed negative correlation (P<0.05) with UR. The correlation analysis by treatment showed negative correlation in NL between UR and PS ((P<0.05). This shows that except for the last two variables PS and UR, the AL and NL are similar. However is necessary to be careful with the quantities and qualities of the milk replacer used in AL. Finally, the weight gain of the lambs in LN depends mainly of the mother´s milk production and not from the ruminal development of the lamb.El objetivo del presente estudio fue comparar los comportamientos metabólico y productivo de corderos en Lactancia Natural (LN) con respecto de corderos en Lactancia Artificial (LA). Se utilizaron 41 corderos divididos en dos tratamientos: LN con 19 corderos amamantados ad libitum de sus madres y, LA con 22 corderos que fueron separados de éstas a las 24 horas de nacidos para luego ser alimentados con sustituto lácteo (105 g repartidos en 3 tomas/día). A todos los corderos se les suministró alimento (creep feeding). Se pesaron los corderos (PS) y se tomaron muestras de sangre por venopunción yugular a los 1, 8, 15, 29 y 43 días de edad (muestreo) (DM). Los metabolitos séricos determinados fueron Proteína Total (PT), Urea (UR), Glucosa (GL) y Triglicéridos (TG). Se utilizó PROCMIXED y PROCCORR de SAS para el análisis estadístico. Se encontró diferencia significativa entre tratamientos (P<0.05) favoreciendo a la LN, únicamente para las variables UR (4.19±1.16 vs 3.52±1.46 mg/dL) y PS (6.09±2.67 vs 4.74±1.79 kg). Se observó correlación negativa de DM (P<0.05) con PT y GL y, positiva con UR (P<0.05) y PS (P<0.0001). Por su parte, GL y TG presentaron correlación negativa (P<0.05) con UR. Al correrse correlaciones separadas por tratamientos, se encontró que en LA se repitieron las correlaciones anteriores para DM con PT, UR y PS y en LN sólo con PS. GL y TG, siguieron mostrando la misma correlación negativa en los dos tratamientos con UR. Sin embargo, en LN se encontró una correlación negativa adicional (P<0.05) para UR con PS. Lo anterior muestra que, a excepción de las dos últimas variables mencionadas, LA no difiere de LN; sin embargo, se tiene que tener gran cuidado en las cantidades y cualidades del sustituto lácteo utilizado en LA. Por otra parte, sugiere que el aumento de peso de los corderos en LN depende en gran medida de la producción láctea de la madre y no tanto del desarrollo ruminal del propio cordero, ya que la correlación negativa entre UR y PS así lo manifiesta
