    Search for composite and exotic fermions at LEP 2

    A search for unstable heavy fermions with the DELPHI detector at LEP is reported. Sequential and non-canonical leptons, as well as excited leptons and quarks, are considered. The data analysed correspond to an integrated luminosity of about 48 pb^{-1} at an e^+e^- centre-of-mass energy of 183 GeV and about 20 pb^{-1} equally shared between the centre-of-mass energies of 172 GeV and 161 GeV. The search for pair-produced new leptons establishes 95% confidence level mass limits in the region between 70 GeV/c^2 and 90 GeV/c^2, depending on the channel.     Search for lightest neutralino and stau pair production in light gravitino scenarios with stau NLSP

    Promptly decaying lightest neutralinos and long-lived staus are searched for in the context of light gravitino scenarios. It is assumed that the stau is the next to lightest supersymmetric particle (NLSP) and that the lightest neutralino is the next to NLSP (NNLSP). Data collected with the Delphi detector at centre-of-mass energies from 161 to 183 \GeV are analysed. No evidence of the production of these particles is found. Hence, lower mass limits for both kinds of particles are set at 95% C.L.. The mass of gaugino-like neutralinos is found to be greater than 71.5 GeV/c^2. In the search for long-lived stau, masses less than 70.0 to 77.5 \GeVcc are excluded for gravitino masses from 10 to 150 \eVcc . Combining this search with the searches for stable heavy leptons and Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model staus a lower limit of 68.5 \GeVcc may be set for the stau mas

    Effects of Cd1-xZnxS alloy composition and post-deposition air anneal on ultra-thin CdTe solar cells produced by MOCVD

    Ultra-thin CdTe:As/Cd1-xZnxS photovoltaic solar cells with an absorber thickness of 0.5 μm were deposited by metal-organic chemical vapour deposition on indium tin oxide coated boro-aluminosilicate substrates. The Zn precursor concentration was varied to compensate for Zn leaching effects after CdCl2 activation treatment. Analysis of the solar cell composition and structure by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy depth profiling and X-ray diffraction showed that higher concentrations of Zn in the Cd1-xZnxS window layer resulted in suppression of S diffusion across the CdTe/Cd1-xZnxS interface after CdCl2 activation treatment. Excessive Zn content in the Cd1-xZnxS alloy preserved the spectral response in the blue region of the solar spectrum, but increased series resistance for the solar cells. A modest increase in the Zn content of the Cd1-xZnxS alloy together with a post-deposition air anneal resulted in an improved blue response and an enhanced open circuit voltage and fill factor. This device yielded a mean efficiency of 8.3% over 8 cells (0.25 cm2 cell area) and best cell efficiency of 8.8%

    Limits on the production of scalar leptoquarks from Z (0) decays at LEP

    A search has been made for pairs and for single production of scalar leptoquarks of the first and second generations using a data sample of 392000 Z0 decays from the DELPHI detector at LEP 1. No signal was found and limits on the leptoquark mass, production cross section and branching ratio were set. A mass limit at 95% confidence level of 45.5 GeV/c2 was obtained for leptoquark pair production. The search for the production of a single leptoquark probed the mass region above this limit and its results exclude first and second generation leptoquarks D0 with masses below 65 GeV/c2 and 73 GeV/c2 respectively, at 95% confidence level, assuming that the D0lq Yukawa coupling alpha(lambda) is equal to the electromagnetic one. An upper limit is also given on the coupling alpha(lambda) as a function of the leptoquark mass m(D0)

    Based on new photometric and kinematical data the structure and stellar composition of the open cluster NGC 5662 is examined. The presence of differential reddening across the cluster field is detected and the cluster stability examined. The luminosity function, distance, age, and chemical composition of NGC 5662 are determined from photometric and spectroscopic data. The new astrophysical parameters derived support the conclusion that the Cepheid V Cen (P=5.5 days) is very likely a cluster member.     Large-volume crystalloid fluid is associated with increased Hyaluronan shedding and inflammation in a canine hemorrhagic shock model

    Shedding of the endothelial glycocalyx precedes leukocyte activation and adherence in acute inflammation. Rapid administration of crystalloid or colloid fluids for treating hemorrhagic shock may cause endothelial glycocalyx shedding, thereby increasing inflammation. This study aimed to compare the effect of different fluid treatments in a canine shock model on glycocalyx biomarker, hyaluronan, and inflammatory biomarkers. Greyhound dogs under general anesthesia subject to hemorrhage for 60 min were given 20 mL kg−1 of either fresh whole blood (FWB), hydroxyethyl starch (HES) 130/0.4, 4% succinylated gelatin (GELO), or 80 mL kg−1 of isotonic crystalloid (CRYST) over 20 min (n = 6 per group). Plasma biomarkers hyaluronan, interleukin (IL) 6, 8, 10, tumor necrosis factor-α, monocyte chemoattractant protein-1, keratinocyte chemokine-like, and atrial natriuretic peptide were measured at baseline, end of hemorrhage (Shock), end of fluid administration (T20), and then 40 (T60), 100 (T120), and 160 (T180) minutes later. Biomarker concentrations were compared between groups using the Kruskal-Wallis test or Fisher's exact test (measurable versus unmeasurable) (significance set at P < 0.05). Hyaluronan concentration peaked early in the CRYST group at T20, compared to HES (P = 0.005) and GELO (P = 0.018), and later in the GELO group at T60, compared to FWB (P < 0.001). The CRYST group had significantly more samples with measurable IL6 at T180 (P = 0.015), compared to GELO, and IL10 at T60, T120, and T180 (all P = 0.015), compared to FWB. There were no significant differences in other biomarker concentrations. In conclusion, rapid large-volume crystalloid administered for hemorrhagic shock was associated with increased hyaluronan and a greater inflammatory response

    Interpretation and perception of slow, moderate, and fast swimming paces in distance and sprint swimmers

    This study assessed how accurately professional swimmers can interpret instructions to swim "slow," "moderate," and "fast." 8 distance swimmers (6 males, 2 females; M age = 19 yr., SD = 3) and 8 sprint swimmers (7 males, 1 female; M age = 18 yr., SD = 1) performed an all-out 50-m crawl stroke and three sets of 8 7 50-m crawl stroke trials interpreting the coach's instruction to swim at slow, moderate, and fast paces. No differences were detected between groups in absolute speed. Nevertheless, distance and sprint swimmers signifi cantly differed in speed normalized to their own 50-m all-out speed (effect sizes = 6.72, 6.20, 1.35 for slow, moderate, and fast, respectively), stroke frequency (effect sizes = 0.81, 1.12, 1.54, respectively), and blood lactate concentration (effect sizes = 0.99, 2.56, 1.70, respectively)
