Phase-transitions in spin-crossover thin films probed by graphene transport measurements
Future multi-functional hybrid devices might combine switchable molecules and
2D material-based devices. Spin-crossover compounds are of particular interest
in this context since they exhibit bistability and memory effects at room
temperature while responding to numerous external stimuli. Atomically-thin 2D
materials such as graphene attract a lot of attention for their fascinating
electrical, optical, and mechanical properties, but also for their reliability
for room-temperature operations. Here, we demonstrate that thermally-induced
spin-state switching of spin-crossover nanoparticle thin films can be monitored
through the electrical transport properties of graphene lying underneath the
films. Model calculations indicate that the charge carrier scattering mechanism
in graphene is sensitive to the spin-state dependence of the relative
dielectric constants of the spin-crossover nanoparticles. This graphene sensor
approach can be applied to a wide class of (molecular) systems with tunable
electronic polarizabilities.Comment: main text: 13 pages, 5 figures ; SI: 14 pages, 12 figure
Functional and bioactive properties of collagen and gelatin from alternative sources: A review
The rising interest in the valorisation of industrial by-products is one of the main reasons why exploring different species and optimizing the extracting conditions of collagen and gelatin has attracted the attention of researchers in the last decade. The most abundant sources of gelatin are pig skin, bovine hide and, pork and cattle bones, however, the industrial use of collagen or gelatin obtained from non-mammalian species is growing in importance. The classical food, photographic, cosmetic and pharmaceutical application of gelatin is based mainly on its gel-forming properties. Recently, and especially in the food industry, an increasing number of new applications have been found for gelatin in products such as emulsifiers, foaming agents, colloid stabilizers, biodegradable film-forming materials and micro-encapsulating agents, in line with the growing trend to replace synthetic agents with more natural ones. In the last decade, a large number of studies have dealt with the enzymatic hydrolysis of collagen or gelatin for the production of bioactive peptides. Besides exploring diverse types of bioactivities, of an antimicrobial, antioxidant or antihypertensive nature, studies have also focused on the effect of oral intake in both animal and human models, revealing the excellent absorption and metabolism of Hyp-containing peptides. The present work is a compilation of recent information on collagen and gelatin extraction from new sources, as well as new processing conditions and potential novel or improved applications, many of which are largely based on induced cross-linking, blending with other biopolymers or enzymatic hydrolysis. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.Peer Reviewe

Four-colour photometry of eclipsing binaries. XL, uvby light curves for the B-type systems DW Carinae, BF Centauri, AC Velorum, and NSV 5783
Aims. In order to increase the limited number of B-stars with accurately known dimensions, and also the number of well studied eclipsing binaries in open clusters, we have undertaken observations and studies of four southern double-lined eclipsing B-type binaries; DWCar, BF Cen, ACVel, and NSV 5783.
Methods. Complete uvby light curves were observed between January 1982 and April 1991 at the Danish 0.5 m telescope at ESO La Silla, since 1985 known as the Strömgren Automatic Telescope (SAT). Standard indices for the systems and the comparison stars,as well as additional minima observations for ACVel, have been obtained later at SAT. For DWCar and ACVel, high-resolution spectra for definitive spectroscopic orbits have also been obtained; they are presented as part of the detailed analyses of these systems.
A few spectra of NSV 5783 are included in the present paper.
Results. For all four systems, the first modern accurate light curves have been established. DWCar is a detached system consisting of two nearly identical components. It is member of the young open cluster Cr228. A detailed analysis, based on the new light curves and 29 high-resolution spectra, is published separately. BFCen is semidetached and is member of NGC 3766. Modern spectra are
needed for a detailed study. ACVel is a detached system with at least one more star. A full analysis, based on the new light curves and 18 high-resolution spectra, is published separately. NSV 5783 is discovered to be an eclipsing binary consisting of two well-detached
components in an 11-day period eccentric (e = 0.18) orbit. Secondary eclipse is practically total. From the light curves and a few high-resolution spectra, accurate photometric elements and preliminary absolute dimensions have been determined. The quite similar components have masses of about 5 M and radii of about 3.5 R, and they seem to have evolved just slightly off the ZAMS. The
measured rotational velocities (≈150 km s−1) are about 6 times those corresponding to pseudosynchronization
Type-based termination of recursive definitions
This paper introduces "lambda-hat", a simply typed lambda calculus
supporting inductive types and recursive function definitions with
termination ensured by types. The system is shown to enjoy subject
reduction, strong normalisation of typable terms and to be stronger than
a related system "lambda-G" in which termination is ensured by a syntactic guard condition. The system can, at will, be extended to also support coinductive types and corecursive function definitions.Information Society Technologies (IST) - Fifth Framework Programm (FP5) - TYPES.Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia (FCT) – PRAXIS XXI/C/EEI/14172/98.INRIA-ICCTI.Estonian Science Foundation (ETF) - grant no. 4155
A calculation of the parameter in the static limit
We calculate the parameter, relevant for --
mixing, from a lattice gauge theory simulation at . The bottom
quarks are simulated in the static theory, the light quarks with Wilson
fermions. Improved smearing functions produced by a variational technique,
MOST, are used to reduce statistical errors and minimize excited-state
contamination of the ground-state signal. We obtain (statistical) (systematic) which corresponds to
(statistical) (systematic) for
the one-loop renormalization-scheme-independent parameter. The systematic
errors include the uncertainty due to alternative (less favored) treatments of
the perturbatively-calculated mixing coefficients; this uncertainty is at least
as large as residual differences between Wilson-static and clover-static
results. Our result agrees with extrapolations of results from relativistic
(Wilson) heavy quark simulations.Comment: 39 pages (REVTeX) including 10 figures (PostScript); Final version

Aceite de almendra virgen: Métodos de extracción y composición
In this paper the extraction methods of virgin almond oil and its chemical composition are reviewed. The most common methods for obtaining oil are solvent extraction, extraction with supercritical fluids (CO2) and pressure systems (hydraulic and screw presses). The best industrial performance, but also the worst oil quality is achieved by using solvents. Oils obtained by this method cannot be considered virgin oils as they are obtained by chemical treatments. Supercritical fluid extraction results in higher quality oils but at a very high price. Extraction by pressing becomes the best option to achieve high quality oils at an affordable price. With regards chemical composition, almond oil is characterized by its low content in saturated fatty acids and the predominance of monounsaturated, especially oleic acid. Furthermore, almond oil contains antioxidants and fat-soluble bioactive compounds that make it an oil with interesting nutritional and cosmetic properties.
Machine learning applied to the prediction of citrus production
An in-depth knowledge about variables affecting production is required in order to predict global production and take decisions in agriculture. Machine learning is a technique used in agricultural planning and precision agriculture. This work (i) studies the effectiveness of machine learning techniques for predicting orchards production; and (ii) variables affecting this production were also identified. Data from 964 orchards of lemon, mandarin, and orange in Corrientes, Argentina are analysed. Graphic and analytical descriptive statistics, correlation coefficients, principal component analysis and Biplot were performed. Production was predicted via M5-Prime, a model regression tree constructor which produces a classification based on piecewise linear functions. For all the species studied, the most informative variable was the trees’ age; in mandarin and orange orchards, age was followed by between and within row distances; irrigation also affected mandarin production. Also, the performance of M5-Prime in the prediction of production is adequate, as shown when measured with correlation coefficients (~0.8) and relative mean absolute error (~0.1). These results show that M5-Prime is an appropriate method to classify citrus orchards according to production and, in addition, it allows for identifying the most informative variables affecting production by tree
Four-colour photometry of eclipsing binaries. XLI uvby light curves for AD Bootis, HW Canis Majoris, SW Canis Majoris, V636 Centauri, VZ Hydrae, and WZ Ophiuchi
CONTEXT: Accurate mass, radius, and abundance determinations from binaries
provide important information on stellar evolution, fundamental to central
fields in modern astrophysics and cosmology.
AIMS: Within the long-term Copenhagen Binary Project, we aim to obtain
high-quality light curves and standard photometry for double-lined detached
eclipsing binaries with late A, F, and G type main-sequence components, needed
for the determination of accurate absolute dimensions and abundances, and for
detailed comparisons with results from recent stellar evolutionary models.
METHODS: Between March 1985 and July 2007, we carried out photometric
observations of AD Boo, HW CMA, SW CMa, V636 Cen, VZ Hya, and WZ Oph at the
Str"omgren Automatic Telescope at ESO, La Silla.
RESULTS: We obtained complete uvby light curves, ephemerides, and standard
uvby\beta indices for all six systems. For V636 Cen and HW CMa, we present the
first modern light curves, whereas for AD Boo, SW CMa, VZ Hya, and WZ Oph, they
are both more accurate and more complete than earlier data. Due to a high
orbital eccentricity (e = 0.50), combined with a low orbital inclination (i =
84.7), only one eclipse, close to periastron, occurs for HW CMa. For the two
other eccentric systems, V636 Cen (e = 0.134) and SW CMa (e = 0.316), apsidal
motion has been detected with periods of 5270 +/- 335 and 14900 +/- 3600 years,
respectively.Comment: Only change is: Bottom lines (hopefully) not truncated anymore.
