Sparkle and graininess are textural effects that appear as intrinsic spatial features of coatings containing goniochromatic pigments, whereas others such as mottling are undesired outcomes. In this study, we present new methods for the evaluation of sparkle, graininess and mottling of automotive coatings through images acquired with a novel gonio-hyperspectral imaging system based on light-emitting diodes with extended spectral sensitivity beyond the visible range (368–1309 nm). A novel analysis of sparkle that considered the amount of sparkling spots was used. Graininess was quantified through a novel statistical descriptor based on the energy descriptor computed from the histogram. A new index was proposed for an enhanced detection of mottling based on the analysis of striping, which was better observed and quantified in the infrared range. Spectral assessments showed a strong relationship with color and spectral reflectance for graininess and mottling. In conclusion, the results showed that these new spatial and spectral methods are a suitable, alternative and potential approach for the assessment of these textural features.Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (MICINN, DPI2011-30090-C02-01) and Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO, DPI2014-56850-R); and the European Union

Biofunctionalized Polymer Nanomaterials: Implications on Shapes and Sizes

    Get PDF
Nanotechnology has been one of the most widely used tools in various industries such as pharmaceutical, food, and chemistry, among others, for the encapsulation of compounds or even microorganisms. However, an analysis of the methodologies or polymer matrices to be used is rarely generated, and these in turn contribute to the objective of the product that is intended to be designed. In addition to the evaluation of its physicochemical, optical, and rheological characteristics, and others, are a set of technological tools that allow predicting the stability of a colloid, however, some of the factors that have less importance as the effect of the synthesis process on the shape and size that a structure may have, studies have been carried out to evaluate this phenomenon, which has become a determining factor in the design of any nanoscale material

MOF-mediated synthesis of supported Fe-doped Pd nanoparticles under mild conditions for magnetically recoverable catalysis

Metal-organic framework (MOF)-driven synthesis is considered as a promising alternative for the development of new catalytic materials with well-designed active sites. This synthetic approach is used here to gradually transform a new bimetallic MOF, with Pd and Fe as the metal components, by the in situ generation of aniline under mild conditions. This methodology results in a compositionally homogeneous nanocomposite formed by Fe-doped Pd nanoparticles that, in turn, are supported on iron oxide-doped carbon. The nanocomposite has been fully characterized by several techniques such as IR and Raman spectroscopy, TEM, XPS, and XAS. The performance of this nanocomposite as an heterogeneous catalyst for hydrogenation of nitroarenes and nitrobenzene coupling with benzaldehyde has been evaluated, proving it to be an efficient and reusable catalyst

    Graininess characterization by multidimensional scaling

A validation of the graininess attribute was made by means of a psychophysical experiment and the multidimensional scaling algorithm. A visual experiment was designed to obtain graininess differences to be used like the dissimilarity matrix in the MDS algorithm. The results revealed that two dimensions are needed to characterize the graininess effect. The BYK-mac-i instrument and a gonio-hyperspectral imaging system were employed to evaluate the statistical dimensions. On one hand, the first dimension correlated well with the graininess value provided by the BYK-mac-i (r2 = 0.9566). However, we were unable to find a relationship with dimension 2 and any parameter measured by this instrument. Furthermore, the images captured by the gonio-hyperspectral imaging system were processed. A good relationship with the correlation parameter was observed (r2 = 0.8958). However, no relationship was established with dimension 2. Based on these conclusions, further research is necessary that focuses on the new imaging processes and a new visual experiment. The authors are grateful to the EMRP for funding Project ‘Multidimensional Reflectometry for Industry’ (JRPI21) and Project ‘Bidirectional reflectance definitions’ (16NRM08). ., 2011. Strandings of cetaceans and sea turtles in the Alboran Sea and Strait of Gibraltar: a long-time glimpse of the north coast (Spain) and the south coast (Morocco). Animal Biodiversity and Conservation, 34.1: 151-163. Abstract Strandings of cetaceans and sea turtles in the Alboran Sea and Strait of Gibraltar: a long-term glimpse at the north coast (Spain) and the south coast (Morocco) .-A total of 13 species of cetaceans and three species of marine turtles were found in this study. Data were collected by eight independent and self-regulated stranding networks, providing information about 1,198 marine mammal (10 odontocetii, three mysticetii and one phocidae) and 574 sea turtle stranding events between 1991 and 2008. Trends in the strandings were analysed in relation to species composition and abundance, and their geographic and seasonal distribution. The most abundant species recorded were the striped dolphin and the loggerhead turtle. Some of the strandings, such as the humpback whale, harbour porpoise, hooded seal and olive ridley turtle, were considered 'rare' because their distribution did not match the pattern of the study. When the north and south coasts in the study area were compared, pilot whales stranded more frequently in the north, while delphinid species stranded more in the south coast, and loggerhead turtles stranded more frequently in the north while leatherback turtles stranded more in south coast.

[Background] To assess the impact of blood cultures negative infective endocarditis (BCNIE) on in-hospital mortality.[Methods] Prospective multicentre study with retrospective analysis of a Spanish cohort including adult patients with definite IE. Cardiac implantable devices infection were excluded. Comparisons between blood cultures positive and BCNIE groups were performed to analyse in-hospital mortality.[Results] 1001 cases were included of which 83 (8.3%) had BCNIE. Alternative microbiological diagnosis was achieved for 39 (47%) out 83 cases. The most frequent identifications were: Coxiella burnetii (11; 28.2%), Tropheryma whipplei (4; 10.3%), Streptococcus gallolyticus (4;10.3%) and Staphylococcus epidermidis (3; 7.7%). Surgery was performed more frequently in BCNIE group (57.8 vs. 36.9%, p < .001). All-cause in-hospital mortality rate was 26.7% without statistical difference between compared groups. BCNIE was not associated to worse mortality rate in Cox regression model (aHR = 1.37, 95% CI 0.90–2.07, p = .14). Absence of microbiological diagnosis was also not associated to worse in-hospital prognosis (aHR = 1.62, 95% CI 0.99–2.64, p = .06).[Conclusions] In our cohort, BCNIE was not associated to greater in-hospital mortality based in multivariate Cox regression models. The variables most frequently associated with mortality were indicated but not performed surgery (aHR = 2.48, 95% CI 1.73–3.56, p < .001), septic shock (aHR = 2.24, 95% CI 1.68–2.99, p < .001), age over 65 years (aHR = 1.88, 95% CI 1.40-2.52, p < .001) and complicated endocarditis (aHR = 1.79, 95% CI 1.36–2.37, p < .001).Peer reviewe

A contemporary picture of enterococcal endocarditis

BACKGROUND: Enterococcal endocarditis (EE) is a growing entity in Western countries. However, quality data from large studies is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to describe the characteristics and analyze the prognostic factors of EE in the GAMES cohort. METHODS: This was a post hoc analysis of a prospectively collected cohort of patients from 35 Spanish centers from 2008 to 2016. Characteristics and outcomes of 516 cases of EE were compared with those of 3,308 cases of nonenterococcal endocarditis (NEE). Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis were performed to investigate risk factors for in-hospital and 1-year mortality, as well as relapses. RESULTS: Patients with EE were significantly older; more frequently presented chronic lung disease, chronic heart failure, prior endocarditis, and degenerative valve disease; and had higher median age-adjusted Charlson score. EE more frequently involved the aortic valve and prosthesis (64.3% vs. 46.7%; p < 0.001; and 35.9% vs. 28.9%; p = 0.002, respectively) but less frequently pacemakers/defibrillators (1.5% vs. 10.5%; p < 0.001), and showed higher rates of acute heart failure (45% vs. 38.3%; p = 0.005). Cardiac surgery was less frequently performed in EE (40.7% vs. 45.9%; p = 0.024). No differences in in-hospital and 1-year mortality were found, whereas relapses were significantly higher in EE (3.5% vs. 1.7%; p = 0.035). Increasing Charlson score, LogEuroSCORE, acute heart failure, septic shock, and paravalvular complications were risk factors for mortality, whereas prior endocarditis was protective and persistent bacteremia constituted the sole risk factor for relapse. CONCLUSIONS: Besides other baseline and clinical differences, EE more frequently affects prosthetic valves and less frequently pacemakers/defibrillators. EE presents higher rates of relapse than NEE.
