On the bar pattern speed determination of NGC 3367
An important dynamic parameter of barred galaxies is the bar pattern speed.
Among several methods that are used for the determination of the pattern speed
the Tremaine-Weinberg method has the advantage of model independency and
accuracy. In this work we apply the method to a simulated bar including gas
dynamics and study the effect of 2D spectroscopy data quality on robustness of
the method. We added a white noise and a Gaussian random field to the data and
measured the corresponding errors in the pattern speed. We found that a signal
to noise ratio in surface density ~5 introduces errors of ~20% for the Gaussian
noise, while for the white noise the corresponding errors reach ~50%. At the
same time the velocity field is less sensitive to contamination. On the basis
of the performed study we applied the method to the NGC 3367 spiral galaxy
using H{\alpha} Fabry-Perot interferometry data. We found for the pattern speed
43 \pm 6 km/s/kpc for this galaxy.Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 16 pages, 16 figure
A large time step 1D upwind explicit scheme (CFL > 1): Application to shallow water equations
It is possible to relax the CourantâFriedrichsâLewy condition over the time step when using explicit schemes. This method, proposed by Leveque, provides accurate and correct solutions of non-sonic shocks. Rarefactions need some adjustments which are explored in the present work with scalar equation and systems of equations. The non-conservative terms that appear in systems of conservation laws introduce an extra difficulty in practical application. The way to deal with source terms is incorporated into the proposed procedure. The boundary treatment is analysed and a reflection wave technique is considered. In presence of strong discontinuities or important source terms, a strategy is proposed to control the stability of the method allowing the largest time step possible. Rubidium-Rich Asymptotic Giant Branch Stars
A long debated issue concerning the nucleosynthesis of neutron-rich elements in Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars is the identification of the neutron source. We report intermediate-mass (4 to 8 solar masses) AGB stars in our Galaxy that are rubidium-rich owing to overproduction of the long-lived radioactive isotope 87Rb, as predicted theoretically 40 years ago. This represents a direct observational evidence that the 22Ne(alpha,n)25Mg reaction must be the dominant neutron source in these stars. These stars then challenge our understanding of the late stages of the evolution of intermediate-mass stars and would promote a highly variable Rb/Sr environment in the early solar nebula
Applicability of the finite element method to analyze the stresses produced in concrete slabs over ground by tire loads of agricultural tractors
There are several methods to dimension concrete slabs due to vehicle loads, most of them based on Westergaard theory. These methods have been developed for industrial vehicles (cars, trucks and forklifts). Considering agricultural buildings one of the most used vehicles is the agricultural tractor whose characteristics (tires of great dimensions but with a reduced contact surface) are different to those of the industrial vehicles. The goal of this research was to analyze the applicability of the finite element method (FEM) to estimate the stresses generated on the concrete slabs considering the loads transmitted by agricultural tractors. To achieve this objective, the effect of the loads transmitted by the rear axle tires of three agricultural tractors has been considered. In parallel, the same study has been carried out using the Westergaard theory. As a preliminary step, to validate the FEM, a numerical analysis has been made to obtain the stresses generated on a concrete slab considering three forklifts. The numerical analysis results have been compared with those obtained by mean of validated methods (Portland Cement Association) and the classical theory of Westergaard. For each agricultural tractor, the actual geometry of the contact surface of tires has been measured on a concrete slab and discretized by the FEM. As a result of the research process developed, it is possible to conclude that the FEM is a valid tool to analyze the tensions generated by the loads transmitted by the tires of agricultural tractors on concrete floors supported on the ground
The kinematics of the quadrupolar nebula M1-75 and the identification of its central star
The link between the shaping of bipolar planetary nebulae and their central
stars is still poorly understood. The kinematics and shaping of the multipolar
nebula M 1-75 are hereby investigated, and the location and nature of its
central star are briefly discussed. Fabry-Perot data from GHaFAS on the WHT
sampling the Doppler shift of the [N II] 658.3 nm line are used to study the
dynamics of the nebula, by means of a detailed 3-D spatio-kinematical model.
Multi-wavelength images and spectra from the WFC and IDS on the INT, and from
ACAM on the WHT, allowed us to constrain the parameters of the central star.
The two pairs of lobes, angularly separated by ~22 degrees, were ejected
simultaneously approx. ~3500-5000 years ago, at the adopted distance range from
3.5 to 5.0 kpc. The larger lobes show evidence of a slight degree of point
symmetry. The shaping of the nebula could be explained by wind interaction in a
system consisting of a post-AGB star surrounded by a disc warped by radiative
instabilities. This requires the system to be a close binary or a single star
which engulfed a planet as it died. On the other hand, we present broad- and
narrow-band images and a low S/N optical spectrum of the highly-reddened,
previously unnoticed star which is likely the nebular progenitor. Its estimated
V-I colour allows us to derive a rough estimate of the parameters and nature of

Solvent-Induced Acceleration of the Rate of Activation of a Molecular Reaction
An increase in the rates of activated processes with the coupling to the solvent has long been predicted through the phenomenological Langevin equation in the weak coupling regime. However, its direct observation in particle-based models has been elusive because the coupling typically places the processes in the spacial-diffusion limited regime wherein rates decrease with increasing friction. In this work, the forward and backward reaction rates of the LiNC Ă LiCN isomerization reaction in a bath of argon atoms at various densities have been calculated directly using molecular dynamics trajectories. The so-called Kramers turnover in the rate with microscopic friction is clearly visible, thus providing direct and unambiguous evidence for the energy-diffusion regime in which rates increase with friction
Quantum Magnetic Deflagration in Mn12 Acetate
We report controlled ignition of magnetization reversal avalanches by surface
acoustic waves in a single crystal of Mn12 acetate. Our data show that the
speed of the avalanche exhibits maxima on the magnetic field at the tunneling
resonances of Mn12. Combined with the evidence of magnetic deflagration in Mn12
acetate (Suzuki et al., cond-mat/0506569) this suggests a novel physical
phenomenon: deflagration assisted by quantum tunneling.Comment: 4 figure
Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome : open bite evolution after tongue reduction
Macroglossia causes functional deficits such as airway obstruction, drooling, phonation difficulties, and leads to protrusion of dentoalveolar structures resulting in an anterior open bite and a prognathic mandibular appearance. Macroglossia is present in the majority of patients with Beckwith-Wiedemann syndrome (BWS) and surgical treatment may be indicated. A retrospective review was conducted including BWS patients who underwent surgical tongue reduction between 2000 and 2015 at the Hospital Universitario La Paz, Madrid. Out of 16 patients with BWS, surgery was performed in 11 cases. Tongue protrusion with open bite was the main indication for surgical treatment. Reduction glossectomy was performed using the keyhole technique. We analysed the relationship between age at surgery and evolution of open bite. Complications were minimal and satisfactory outcomes were observed with a decrease in anterior open bite. In this study we have observed that surgical treatment in patients with BWS and open bite accompanied by macroglossia seems to provide positive results with a satisfactory outcome in dentoskeletal alterations
Low temperature microwave emission from molecular clusters
We investigate the experimental detection of the electromagnetic radiation
generated in the fast magnetization reversal in Mn12-acetate at low
temperatures. In our experiments we used large single crystals and assemblies
of several small single crystals of Mn12-acetate placed inside a cylindrical
stainless steel waveguide in which an InSb hot electron device was also placed
to detect the radiation. All this was set inside a SQUID magnetometer that
allowed to change the magnetic field and measure the magnetic moment and the
temperature of the sample as the InSb detected simultaneously the radiation
emitted from the molecular magnets. Our data show a sequential process in which
the fast inversion of the magnetic moment first occurs, then the radiation is
detected by the InSb device, and finally the temperature of the sample
increases during 15 ms to subsequently recover its original value in several
hundreds of milliseconds.Comment: changed conten
