    Dirac points with giant spin-orbit splitting in the electronic structure of two-dimensional transition-metal carbides

    Two-dimensional (2D) materials, especially their most prominent member, graphene, have greatly influenced many scientific areas. Moreover, they have become a base for investigating the relativistic properties of condensed matter within the emerging field of Dirac physics. This has ignited an intense search for new materials where charge carriers behave as massless or massive Dirac fermions. Here, we theoretically show the existence of Dirac electrons in a series of 2D transition-metal carbides, known as MXenes. They possess twelve conical crossings in the 1st Brillouin zone with giant spin-orbit splitting. Our findings indicate that the 2D band structure of MXenes is protected against external perturbations and preserved even in multilayer phases. These results, together with the broad possibilities to engineer the properties of these materials phases, make Dirac MXenes a potential candidate for studying and developing novel Dirac-physics-based technologies.Comment: 4 figures and supplementar

    How gender, majors, religion and mental health affect the justified death attitude?

    Background: Death penalty and euthanasia are disputed practices in the world. However, they are considered "justified" by their proponents. We newly developed a scale for assessment of the attitude toward justified death, which determines "hot cognition" using a number of scenarios. Objectives: This study aimed at assessing the effects of the major demographic items including gender, major, religion, and mental health on the justified death attitude. Methods: A total of 481 participants including 419 university students and 62 seminarians participated in the study in Tehran, Iran. The Persian versions of the justified death attitude scale and the general health questionnaire-12 were used for data collection. Data were analyzed using the multivariate analysis of variance. Results: Capital punishment was suggested more frequently for rape and drug trafficking and less frequently for murder, and infrequently for adultery. Men and religious subjects showed a more positive attitude toward execution. Furthermore, most of the subjects did not agree with euthanasia; surprisingly, active euthanasia was more acceptable than passive euthanasia. Finally, death penalty and euthanasia did not show an association with mental health. Conclusions: Individual characteristics like gender, major, and religiosity could significantly affect the attitude of people toward justified death. Further studies including neuropsychological methods are suggested. © 2017, Iranian Journal of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences

    Gyrospun antimicrobial nanoparticle loaded fibrous polymeric filters

Two types of novel antimicrobial nanoparticles and poly (methylmethacrylate) polymer were used in this work. X-ray diffraction analysis of the nanoparticles revealed Ag, Cu and W are the main elements present in them. The concentration of the polymer solution and the nanoparticle concentration had a significant influence on the fibre diameter, pore size and morphology. Fibres with a diameter in the range of 6-20 ìm were spun using 20 wt% polymer solutions containing 0.1, 0.25 and 0.5 w% nanoparticles under 0.3 MPa working pressure and a rotational speed of 36000 rpm. Continuous, bead-free fibre morphologies were obtained for each case. The pore size in the fibres varied between 36-300 nm. Successful incorporation of the nanoparticles in polymer fibres was confirmed by energy dispersive x-ray analysis. The fibres were also gyrospun on to metallic disks to prepare filters which were tested for their antibacterial activity on a suspension of Pseudomonas aeruginosa.     Some characterization and ordering results based on entropies of current records

    The aim of this paper is to investigate the entropy properties of current records. Several characterizations are obtained based on the entropy of these statistics. It is proved that the equality of the entropy of the endpoints of record coverage is a characteristic property of symmetric distribution. It is shown that the parent distribution can be identified uniquely by the entropy properties of the endpoints of record coverage. Considering the records coming from distribution with decreasing (increasing) density, the monotonicity of entropy of current records is discussed. We also prove that the dispersive ordering of the parent distributions implies the entropy ordering of their respective current records.

    Single-step synthesis process of Ti3SiC2 ohmic contacts on 4H-SiC by sputter-deposition of Ti

    We report a single-step procedure for growth of ohmic Ti3SiC2 on 4H-SiC by sputter-deposition of Ti at 960 °C, based on the Ti–SiC solid-state reaction during deposition. X-ray diffraction and electron microscopy show the growth of interfacial Ti3SiC2. The as-deposited contacts are ohmic, in contrast to multistep processes with deposition followed by rapid thermal annealing. This procedure also offers the possibility of direct synthesis of oxygen-barrier capping layers before exposure to air, potentially improving contact stability in high-temperature and high-power devices.We acknowledge the support from the VINN Excellence Center in research and innovation on Functional Nanoscale Materials (FunMat) by the Swedish Governmental Agency for Innovation Systems.
