Histochemical aspects of the yolk-sac and digestive tract of larvae of the Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis (Kaup, 1858)

carbohydrates and proteins rich in different aminoacids were studied using histological and histochemical procedures, in Senegal sole, Solea senegalensis (Kaup, 1858) larvae from hatching until day 15. Glycogen,
proteins and glycoproteins were detected in the yolk-sac of the larvae at hatching and during the yolk-resorption. The epithelia1 digestive system (brush border, enterocytes and goblet cells) contained neutral and acid
mucins (carboxylated andlor sulphated). Glycogen was observed in the cytoplasm of the digestive absortive cells (enterocytes) and in the liver (hepatocytes) on day 3-4
posthatching. Protein reactions, and specially those that showed proteins rich in arginine, tyrosine and tryptophan, were very intense in the zymogen granules of the pancreatic cells. Oesophageal and intestinal goblet cells contained glucose N-acetyl and sialic acid residues, but the mucin content of these mucous cells did not show affinity towards Con-A, suggesting the absence of
glycoproteins with Mannose andlor glucose residues. WGA showed a very intense positivity in the microvilli of the digestive epithelium of the larvae and positive granules for both lectins, specially for Con-A, were detected in the cytoplasm of the anterior intestinal

Numerical Simulations of Gravity-Driven Fingering in Unsaturated Porous Media Using a Non-Equilibrium Model
This is a computational study of gravity-driven fingering instabilities in
unsaturated porous media. The governing equations and corresponding numerical
scheme are based on the work of Nieber et al. [Ch. 23 in Soil Water Repellency,
eds. C. J. Ritsema and L. W. Dekker, Elsevier, 2003] in which non-monotonic
saturation profiles are obtained by supplementing the Richards equation with a
non-equilibrium capillary pressure-saturation relationship, as well as
including hysteretic effects. The first part of the study takes an extensive
look at the sensitivity of the finger solutions to certain key parameters in
the model such as capillary shape parameter, initial saturation, and capillary
relaxation coefficient. The second part is a comparison to published
experimental results that demonstrates the ability of the model to capture
realistic fingering behaviour
Breeding latitude predicts timing but not rate of spring migration in a widespread migratory bird in South America
Identifying the processes that determine avian migratory strategies in different environmental contexts is imperative to understanding the constraints to survival and reproduction faced by migratory birds across the planet. We compared the spring migration strategies of Fork‐tailed Flycatchers (Tyrannus s. savana) that breed at south‐temperate latitudes (i.e., austral migrants) vs. tropical latitudes (i.e., intratropical migrants) in South America. We hypothesized that austral migrant flycatchers are more time‐selected than intratropical migrants during spring migration. As such, we predicted that austral migrants, which migrate further than intratropical migrants, will migrate at a faster rate and that the rate of migration for austral migrants will be positively correlated with the onset of spring migration. We attached light‐level geolocators to Fork‐tailed Flycatchers at two tropical breeding sites in Brazil and at two south‐temperate breeding sites in Argentina and tracked their movements until the following breeding season. Of 286 geolocators that were deployed, 37 were recovered ~1 year later, of which 28 provided useable data. Rate of spring migration did not differ significantly between the two groups, and only at one site was there a significantly positive relationship between date of initiation of spring migration and arrival date. This represents the first comparison of individual migratory strategies among conspecific passerines breeding at tropical vs. temperate latitudes and suggests that austral migrant Fork‐tailed Flycatchers in South America are not more time‐selected on spring migration than intratropical migrant conspecifics. Low sample sizes could have diminished our power to detect differences (e.g., between sexes), such that further research into the mechanisms underpinning migratory strategies in this poorly understood system is necessary.Fil: Jahn, Alex. Single donor ionization energies in a nanoscale CMOS channel
One consequence of the continued downwards scaling of transistors is the
reliance on only a few discrete atoms to dope the channel, and random
fluctuations of the number of these dopants is already a major issue in the
microelectonics industry. While single-dopant signatures have been observed at
low temperature, studying the impact of only one dopant up to room temperature
requires extremely small lengths. Here, we show that a single arsenic dopant
dramatically affects the off-state behavior of an advanced microelectronics
field effect transistor (FET) at room temperature. Furthermore, the ionization
energy of this dopant should be profoundly modified by the close proximity of
materials with a different dielectric constant than the host semiconductor. We
measure a strong enhancement, from 54meV to 108meV, of the ionization energy of
an arsenic atom located near the buried oxide. This enhancement is responsible
for the large current below threshold at room temperature and therefore
explains the large variability in these ultra-scaled transistors. The results
also suggest a path to incorporating quantum functionalities into silicon CMOS
devices through manipulation of single donor orbitals
Validation of an instrument on tactical-offensive knowledge for players with intellectual disability
El objetivo de este trabajo se centra en construir y validar una herramienta que
permita, de forma fiable, evaluar el conocimiento de base de jugadores con
discapacidad intelectual leve en aspectos de táctica ofensiva en FS, permitiendo
usarlo como evaluación inicial complementaria que guíe el proceso de
entrenamiento. El tamaño muestral fue de 68 jugadores (Medad=27; SDedad=9.06
y Mexperiencia=11.78; SDexperiencia=1,29). Los resultados muestran valores
adecuados de consistencia interna y de fiabilidad (α=0.64, ω=0.74, ICC=0.64 y
test-retest). De manera complementaria, se realizó un análisis cualitativo,
mediante una entrevista colectiva a un grupo de expertos, sobre la utilidad del
instrumento en esta población de deportistas. Los resultados permiten establecer
una sólida base para el empleo de este instrumento en futuros estudiosThe objective of this work is to build and validate a tool that allows, reliably,
evaluate the base knowledge of players with mild intellectual impairment in
aspects of offensive tactical in FS, so that it can be used as an additional initial
evaluation to guide the training process of coaches. The sample size is
constituted by 68 subjects (Mage=27; SDage=9.06 y Mexperience=11.78;
SDexperience=1,29). The results show satisfactory internal consistency and
reliability values (α=0.64, ω=0.74, ICC=0.64 and test-retest). In a
complementary manner, a qualitative analysis was carried out, through a
collective interview with a group of experts, about the utility of the instrument in
this population of athletes. The results allow to establish a solid base for the use
of this instrument in future studie
Why do women invest in pre-pregnancy health and care? A qualitative investigation with women attending maternity services
Background Despite the importance attributed to good pre-pregnancy care and its potential to improve pregnancy and child health outcomes, relatively little is known about why women invest in pre-pregnancy health and care. We sought to gain insight into why women invested in pre-pregnancy health and care. Methods We carried out 20 qualitative in-depth interviews with pregnant or recently pregnant women who were drawn from a survey of antenatal clinic attendees in London, UK. Interviewees were purposively sampled to include high and low investors in pre-pregnancy health and care, with variation in age, partnership status, ethnicity and pre-existing medical conditions. Data analysis was conducted using the Framework method. Results We identified three groups in relation to pre-pregnancy health and care: 1) The “prepared” group, who had high levels of pregnancy planning and mostly positive attitudes to micronutrient supplementation outside of pregnancy, carried out pre-pregnancy activities such as taking folic acid and making changes to diet and lifestyle. 2) The “poor knowledge” group, who also had high levels of pregnancy planning, did not carry out pre-pregnancy activities and described themselves as having poor knowledge. Elsewhere in their interviews they expressed a strong dislike of micronutrient supplementation. 3) The “absent pre-pregnancy period” group, had the lowest levels of pregnancy planning and also expressed anti-supplement views. Even discussing the pre-pregnancy period with this group was difficult as responses to questions quickly shifted to focus on pregnancy itself. Knowledge of folic acid was poor in all groups. Conclusion Different pre-pregnancy care approaches are likely to be needed for each of the groups. Among the “prepared” group, who were proactive and receptive to health messages, greater availability of information and better response from health professionals could improve the range of pre-pregnancy activities carried out. Among the “poor knowledge” group, better response from health professionals might yield greater uptake of pre-pregnancy information. A different, general health strategy might be more appropriate for the “absent pre-pregnancy period” group. The fact that general attitudes to micronutrient supplementation were closely related to whether or not women invested in pre-pregnancy health and care was an unanticipated finding and warrants further investigation.This report is independent research commissioned and funded by the Department of Health Policy Research Programme Pre-Pregnancy Health and Care in England: Exploring Implementation and Public Health Impact, 006/0068
Hormonal therapeutic strategy on the induction of accessory corpora lutea in relation to follicle size and on the increase of progesterone in sheep
We determined the effect of GnRH or hCG treatment on day 4 post-time artificial insemination (FTAI) on the formation of accessory corpora lutea (acc-CL) and on the concentration of serum progesterone (P4) in sheep. Multiparous adult Merino ewes (n = 36) were synchronized for estrus using double injection of PGF2a agonist (125 mg Cloprostenol) with an interval of 14 days. At 53e56 h after the second PG application, FTAI was performed. On day 4 post FTAI, ewes were either treated with analogue of GnRH (4 mg buserelin; n = 12) or hCG (300 IU, hCG; n = 12) or saline solution (1 ml; Control; n = 12). Two laparoscopic ovarian examinations were performed on days 4 and 10 post FTAI. In the first observation, we determined the number of post ovulation corpora lutea (po-CL) and the site, number and diameter of follicles present in both ovaries. In the second laparoscopy, we observed the number of po-CL and acc-CL.
The sizes of the follicles that generated the acc-CL were determined according to the position of the follicles observed in the first laparoscopy. Serum P4 concentration was determined on days 4, 7, 10, 13, 17 and 21 post FTAI by chemiluminescence. A similar follicular population in size and number was observed in the three experimental groups prior to the beginning of treatments (Follicles 2 mm: 6.4 ± 3.7, 3 mm: 3.0 ± 2.3, 4 mm: 1.1 ± 0.5, 5 mm: 1.4 ± 0.8; P ˃ 0.05). The formation of 1.0 ± 0.4 and 1.1 ± 0.3 acc-CL was observed in the GnRH and hCG groups, respectively (P ˃ 0.05), but was not observed in the Control group (P < 0.05). Follicle sizes from which acc-CL generated were 3, 4 and 5 mm and did not differ between hormonal treatments (P ˃ 0.05). The hCG group had higher mean concentrations of P4 on days 7, 10, 13 and 17 post FTAI compared with the GnRH group and the Control group (P < 0.05), while no differences were observed between these two latter groups (P > 0.05). Mean P4 concentrations in ewes treated with hCG showed no differences according to the size of the follicle from which acc-CL were generated (P ˃ 0.05). In conclusion, administration of hCG or GnRH on day 4 post FTAI induced the formation of one acc-CL from follicles of 3, 4 or 5 mm, indistinctly. However, serum P4 concentration increased significantly only in the hCG group. The serum P4 concentrations of acc-CL that originated from different follicle sizes did not differ.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria

The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the administration of hCG or GnRH at day 4 post fixed-time artificial insemination (FTAI) on the formation of accessory corpora lutea (acc-CL) and the concentration of serum progesterone (P4) in sheep. Multiparous adult Merino ewes (n=36) were treated for estrus synchronization using two intramuscular (i.m.) injections of prostaglandins (PG, 125 μg Cloprostenol, Cyclase®, Syntex, Argentine) with an interval of 14 days. At 53-56 h after the second PG application, FTAI was performed vaginally with a dose of 100 million spermatozoa of fresh semen.Facultad de Ciencias Veterinaria
