On The Low Frequency Quasi Periodic Oscillations of X-ray Sources
Based on the interpretation of the twin kilohertz Quasi Periodic Oscillations
(kHz QPOs) of X-ray spectra of Low Mass X-Ray Binaries
(LMXBs) to the Keplerian and the periastron precession frequencies at the
magnetosphere-disk of X-ray neutron star (NS) respectively, we ascribe the low
frequency Quasi Periodic Oscillations (LFQPO) and HBO (15-60 Hz QPO for Z
sources or Atoll sources) to the periastron precession at some outer disk
radius.
The obtained conclusions include: all QPO frequencies increase with
increasing the accretion rate. The obtained theoretical relations between HBO
(LFQPO) frequency and the kHz QPO frequency are similar to the measured
empirical formula. Further, the possible dynamical mechanism for QPO production

Global gene expression analysis provides insight into local adaptation to geothermal streams in tadpoles of the Andean toad Rhinella spinulosa
Indexación: Web of Science; Scopus.The anuran Rhinella spinulosa is distributed along the Andes Range at altitudes that undergo wide daily and seasonal variation in temperature. One of the populations inhabits geothermal streams, a stable environment that influences life history traits such as the timing of metamorphosis. To investigate whether this population has undergone local adaptation to this unique habitat, we carried out transcriptome analyses in animals from two localities in two developmental stages (prometamorphic and metamorphic) and exposed them to two temperatures (20 and 25 degrees C). RNA-Seq, de novo assembly and annotation defined a transcriptome revealing 194,469 high quality SNPs, with 1,507 genes under positive selection. Comparisons among the experimental conditions yielded 1,593 differentially expressed genes. A bioinformatics search for candidates revealed a total of 70 genes that are highly likely to be implicated in the adaptive response of the population living in a stable environment, compared to those living in an environment with variable temperatures. Most importantly, the population inhabiting the geothermal environment showed decreased transcriptional plasticity and reduced genetic variation compared to its counterpart from the non-stable environment. Numerical study of the aerodynamic performance of NACA 0012 in the presence of an unsteady heat source
The objective of this paper is to study the effect of an unsteady moving heat source on the aerodynamic performance of an NACA 0012 airfoil section, with particular focus on the lift and drag coefficients. The compressible Navier–Stokes equations are solved using a finite volume method as well as Spalart-Allmaras Model for turbulence simulation. The heat source periodically moves over the lower surface of the airfoil in the downstream direction. The numerical results show how the drag and lift coefficient strongly depend upon the velocity of the source. For a constant source power, a progressive improvement in the mean values of lift and drag coefficients is observed as velocity increases
Minimal speed of fronts of reaction-convection-diffusion equations
We study the minimal speed of propagating fronts of convection reaction
diffusion equations of the form for
positive reaction terms with . The function is continuous
and vanishes at . A variational principle for the minimal speed of the
waves is constructed from which upper and lower bounds are obtained. This
permits the a priori assesment of the effect of the convective term on the
minimal speed of the traveling fronts. If the convective term is not strong
enough, it produces no effect on the minimal speed of the fronts. We show that
if , then the minimal speed is given by
the linear value , and the convective term has no effect on the
minimal speed. The results are illustrated by applying them to the exactly

El consumo de probiótico Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 7315/7316 mejora el estado de salud general en personas de edad avanzada
Fundamentos: Con la edad avanzada se producen cambios en la microflora intestinal que pueden afectar al estado de salud general. En este trabajo analizamos el efecto de Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 7315/7316 sobre la regulación del tránsito intestinal y el estado nutricional. Métodos: Hemos realizado un estudio clínico dobleciego, controlado por placebo y aleatorizado. Hemos evaluado la evolución de la frecuencia de defecación semanal y los niveles en sangre de proteínas totales, albúmina,colesterol y proteína C-reactiva. Resultados: Lactobacillus plantarum CECT 7315/7316 ayuda a regular el tránsito intestinal y mejora el estado nutricional en personas mayores. Conclusiones: El consumo de productos funcionales que contengan L. plantarum CECT 7315/7316 mejora la calidad de vida de personas de la tercera edad
Fast variability from black-hole binaries
Currently available information on fast variability of the X-ray emission
from accreting collapsed objects constitutes a complex phenomenology which is
difficult to interpret. We review the current observational standpoint for
black-hole binaries and survey models that have been proposed to interpret it.
Despite the complex structure of the accretion flow, key observational
diagnostics have been identified which can provide direct access to the
dynamics of matter motions in the close vicinity of black holes and thus to the
some of fundamental properties of curved spacetimes, where strong-field general

Effective Lagrangian description of the lepton flavor violating decays Z-->li lj
A comprehensive analysis of the lepton flavor violating (LFV) decays Z-->li
lj is presented within the effective Lagrangian approach. Both the decoupling
and nondecoupling scenarios are explored. The experimental constraints from li
--> lj lk \bar{lk} and li -->lj gamma as well as some relationships arising
from the gauge invariance of the effective Lagrangian are used to put
constraints on Z-->li lj. It is found that while current experimental data
impose very strong constraints on Z-->mu e, the channel Z --> tau mu (e)still

The Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function at the Dawn of Gaia
The [O III] 5007 Planetary Nebula Luminosity Function (PNLF) is an excellent
extragalactic standard candle. In theory, the PNLF method should not work at
all, since the luminosities of the brightest planetary nebulae (PNe) should be
highly sensitive to the age of their host stellar population. Yet the method
appears robust, as it consistently produces < 10% distances to galaxies of all
Hubble types, from the earliest ellipticals to the latest-type spirals and
irregulars. It is therefore uniquely suited for cross-checking the results of
other techniques and finding small offsets between the Population I and
Population II distance ladders. We review the calibration of the method and
show that the zero points provided by Cepheids and the Tip of the Red Giant
Branch are in excellent agreement. We then compare the results of the PNLF with
those from Surface Brightness Fluctuation measurements, and show that, although
both techniques agree in a relative sense, the latter method yields distances
that are ~15% larger than those from the PNLF. We trace this discrepancy back
to the calibration galaxies and argue that, due to a small systematic error
associated with internal reddening, the true distance scale likely falls
between the extremes of the two methods. We also demonstrate how PNLF
measurements in the early-type galaxies that have hosted Type Ia supernovae can
help calibrate the SN Ia maximum magnitude-rate of decline relation. Finally,
we discuss how the results from space missions such as Kepler and Gaia can help
our understanding of the PNLF phenomenon and improve our knowledge of the
