The Role of Citizenship Status and its Impact on Latinos’ Civic Engagement in the United States

    Get PDF
This paper discusses the way in which U.S. citizenship status and legal permanent resident status impacts the likelihood of involvement in civic engagement activities among Latinos in the United States. Past research has looked into various variables such as group consciousness, Spanish-media language, and importance of issues; however, specific research on citizenship status is limited. This paper analyzes data from the Pew Research Center and data obtained from individual interviews in the Midwest. The results show that citizens are more likely than residents to be involved in the community and politics. These findings have important implications in how policies are created and how organizations and government approach the Latino population

BACKGROUND: To assess functional results, complications, and success of larynx preservation in patients with recurrent squamous cell carcinoma after radiotherapy. METHODS: From a database of 40 patients who underwent supracricoid partial laryngectomy (SCPL) with cricohyoidoepiglottopexy (CHEP) from June 2001 to April 2006, eight patients were treated previously with radiotherapy due to squamous cell carcinoma of the glottic region and were treated for recurrence at the site of the primary cancer. RESULTS: SCPL with CHEP was performed in six men and two women with a mean age of 67 years due to recurrence and/or persistence at a mean time of 30 months postradiotherapy (in case #8 after concomitant chemoradiotherapy). Bilateral neck dissection at levels II-V was performed in six patients. Only case #8 presented metastasis in one node. In case #5, Delphian node was positive. It was possible to preserve both arytenoids in five cases. Definitive surgical margins were negative. Complications were encountered in seven patients. Follow-up was on average 44 months (range: 20-67 months). Organ preservation in this series was 75%, and local control was 87%. Overall 5-year survival was 50%. CONCLUSIONS: In selected patient with persistence and/or recurrence after radiotherapy due to cancer of the larynx, SCPL with CHEP seems to be feasible with acceptable local control and toxicity. Complications may occur as in previously non-irradiated patients. These complications must be treated conservatively to avoid altering laryngeal function

GENYOi004-A: An induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) line generated from a patient with autism-related ADNP syndrome carrying a pTyr719* mutation

    Get PDF
ADNP syndrome is an intellectual disability associated with Autism spectrum disorder caused by mutations in ADNP. We generated an iPSC line from an ADNP syndrome pediatric patient harboring the mutation p.Trp719* (GENYOi004-A). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were reprogrammed using a non-transmissible form of Sendai viruses expressing the four Yamanaka factors (Oct3/4, SOX2, KLF4 and c-MYC). Characterization of GENYOi004-A included mutation analysis of ADNP by allele-specific PCR, genetic identity by Short Tandem Repeats polymorphism profiling, alkaline phosphatase enzymatic activity, expression of pluripotency-associated factors and pluripotency studies in vivo. GENYOi004-A will be useful to evaluate ADNP syndrome alterations at early developmental stages. This work was supported by the Postdoctoral Subprogramme Juan de la Cierva (JCI_2012_12666) to RM and Ramon y Cajal (RYC-2015-18382) to PJR founded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness; the Instituto de Salud Carlos III-FEDER (CP12/03175 and CPII17/00032) to V.R-M. and (PI12/1598, CPII15/00018 and PI16/01340) to PJR; the Instituto de Investigación Valdecilla (IDIVAL) 2014.041 to JLF-L and DG-L and APG/03 to JLF-L

Role of perfusion CT in the evaluation of functional primary tumour response after radiochemotherapy in head and neck cancer: Preliminary findings

    Get PDF
Objective: To report the initial results of a prospective study aimed at evaluating the CT perfusion parameter changes (ΔPCTp) of the primary tumour after radiochemotherapy (RCT) in head and neck cancer (HNC) and to correlate with positron emission tomography (PET)/CT response. Methods: Eligibility criteria included HNC (Stage III-IV) candidates for RCT. Patients underwent perfusion CT (PCT) at baseline and at 3 weeks and 3 months after treatment. Blood volume, blood flow, mean transit time (MTT) and permeability surface (PS) product were computed. Moreover, PET/CT was performed at baseline and 3 months after treatment. The ΔPCTp were evaluated between baseline and 3-week/3-month evaluations, whereas PET/CT response was based on the maximum standardized uptake value changes according to the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer criteria. Results: Between July 2012 and July 2015, 25 patients were enrolled. A significant reduction of all CT tumour perfusion parameters (PCTp) was observed from the baseline to after RCT (p<0.001). Specifically, a significant reduction was shown at 3 weeks for all PCTp except MTT (from 6.18 to 5.14s; p=0.722). Differently, a significant reduction of all PCTp (p<0.001) including MTT (from 6.18 to 2.24s; p=0.001) was shown at 3 months. Moreover, the reduction of PS resulted in a significant prediction of PET/CT response at 3 months (p=0.037) with the trend also at 3 weeks (p=0.099) at the multivariate analysis. Conclusion: Our preliminary findings seem to show that almost all PCTp are significantly reduced after RCT, whereas PS seems to come out as the strongest factor in predicting the PET/CT response. Advances in knowledge: This article provides information on the potential useful role of PCT in evaluating tumour response after both early and late RCT

    Gargantuan hail in Argentina

    Get PDF
On 8 February 2018, a supercell storm produced gargantuan (>15 cm or >6 in. in maximum dimension) hail as it moved over the heavily populated city of Villa Carlos Paz in Córdoba Province, Argentina. Observations of gargantuan hail are quite rare, but the large population density here yielded numerous witnesses and social media pictures and videos from this event that document multiple large hailstones. The storm was also sampled by the newly installed operational polarimetric C-band radar in Córdoba. During the RELAMPAGO campaign, the authors interviewed local residents about their accounts of the storm and uncovered additional social media video and photographs revealing extremely large hail at multiple locations in town. This article documents the case, including the meteorological conditions supporting the storm (with the aid of a high-resolution WRF simulation), the storm's observed radar signatures, and three noteworthy hailstones observed by residents. These hailstones include a freezer-preserved 4.48-in. (11.38 cm) maximum dimension stone that was scanned with a 3D infrared laser scanner, a 7.1-in. (18 cm) maximum dimension stone, and a hailstone photogrammetrically estimated to be between 7.4 and 9.3 in. (18.8-23.7 cm) in maximum dimension, which is close to or exceeds the world record for maximum dimension. Such a well-observed case is an important step forward in understanding environments and storms that produce gargantuan hail, and ultimately how to anticipate and detect such extreme events.Fil: Kumjian, Matthew R..
