Anomalous lifetime distributions and topological traps in ordering dynamics

    Get PDF
We address the role of community structure of an interaction network in ordering dynamics, as well as associated forms of metastability. We consider the voter and AB model dynamics in a network model which mimics social interactions. The AB model includes an intermediate state between the two excluding options of the voter model. For the voter model we find dynamical metastable disordered states with a characteristic mean lifetime. However, for the AB dynamics we find a power law distribution of the lifetime of metastable states, so that the mean lifetime is not representative of the dynamics. These trapped metastable states, which can order at all time scales, originate in the mesoscopic network structure.Comment: 7 pages; 6 figure

Characterization of activated carbon fiber/polyaniline materials by position-resolved microbeam small-angle X-ray scattering

    Get PDF
Activated carbon fiber (ACF)/polyaniline (PANI) materials have been prepared using two different methods, viz. chemical and electrochemical polymerization. Electrochemical characterization of both materials shows that the electrodes with polyaniline have a higher capacitance than does a pristine porous carbon electrode. To analyze the distribution of PANI within the ACF, characterization by position-resolved microbeam small-angle X-ray scattering (μSAXS) has been carried out. μSAXS results obtained with a single ACF indicate that, for the experimental conditions used, a PANI coating is formed inside the micropores and that it is higher in the external regions of the ACF than in the core. Additionally, it seems that the penetration of PANI inside the fibers occurs in a larger extent for the chemical polymerization or, in other words, for the electrochemically polymerized sample there is a slightly larger accumulation of PANI in the external regions of the ACF.Fil: Salinas-Torres, D.. High Performance Tunable Catalysts Prepared by Using 3D Printing

    Get PDF
Honeycomb monoliths are the preferred supports in many industrial heterogeneous catalysis reactions, but current extrusion synthesis only allows obtaining parallel channels. Here, we demonstrate that 3D printing opens new design possibilities that outperform conventional catalysts. High performance carbon integral monoliths have been prepared with a complex network of interconnected channels and have been tested for carbon dioxide hydrogenation to methane after loading a Ni/CeO2 active phase. CO2 methanation rate is enhanced by 25% at 300 ◦C because the novel design forces turbulent flow into the channels network. The methodology and monoliths developed can be applied to other heterogeneous catalysis reactions, and open new synthesis options based on 3D printing to manufacture tailored heterogeneous catalysts

Production of activated carbons from waste tyres for low temperature NOx control

    Get PDF
Waste tyres were pyrolysed in a bench scale reactor and the product chars were chemically activated with alkali chemical agents, KOH, K2CO3, NaOH and Na2CO3 to produce waste tyre derived activated carbons. The activated carbon products were then examined in terms of their ability to adsorb NOx (NO) at low temperature (25°C) from a simulated industrial process flue gas. This study investigates the influence of surface area and porosity of the carbons produced with the different alkali chemical activating agents on NO capture from the simulated flue gas. The influence of varying the chemical activation conditions on the porous texture and corresponding NO removal from the flue gas was studied. The activated carbon sorbents were characterized in relation to BET surface area, micropore and mesopore volumes and chemical composition. The highest NO removal efficiency for the waste tyre derived activated carbons was ∼75% which was obtained with the adsorbent treated with KOH which correlated with both the highest BET surface area and largest micropore volume. In contrast, the waste tyre derived activated carbons prepared using K2CO3, NaOH and Na2CO3 alkali activating agents appeared to have little influence on NO removal from the flue gases. The results suggest problematic waste tyres, have the potential to be converted to activated carbons with NOx removal efficiency comparable with conventionally produced carbons

Zeolite A-Carbon Membranes: Possibilities in H2 Purification and how to Overcome their Shortcomings

    Get PDF
This work describes the modification of zeolite Na-LTA membranes supported on macroporous carbon materials, prepared by a combination of secondary hydrothermal treatment followed by different alternative post-synthesis procedures, which aim at improving the permeance properties of the as-synthesized Na-LTA membranes with a simulated reformer mixture (H2, CO, CO2 and H2O) towards their use in a hydrogen purification device. These post-synthetic treatments include the deposition of a thin layer of amorphous silica formed by the hydrolysis of a silicon alcoxide, the coating with a thin metallic film by electroless plating, and the deposition of noble metal nanoparticles. Our results indicate that some of these treatments, which may be performed very quickly compared to other treatments which are generally used in order to improve the quality of the membranes, result in membranes which may effectively separate H2 from CO under simulated reformer conditions. Considering the simple approach employed in some of the cases described in this study, the potential benefits should be considered highly interesting in fields such as membrane recovery and membrane selectivity control. The authors would like to thank the Spanish Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad (MINECO), GV and FEDER funds (Projects CTQ2015-66080-R MINECO/FEDER, PROMETEOII/2014/10, RyC-2009-03813), for the financial support for this work

Evidence of autochthonous transmission of urinary schistosomiasis in Almeria (southeast Spain): An outbreak analysis

    Get PDF
Background: Schistosomiasis is endemic in 78 countries belonging to tropical and subtropical areas. However, autochthonous transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis was reported in Corsica (France) in 2013. We present evidence of autochthonous transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis in Almería (Spain) in 2003. Methods: Description of the outbreak in farmers and subsequent epidemiological studies aimed at searching for Bulinus snails and their genotypic characteristics. Results: The outbreak affected 4 farmers out of a group of 5 people who repeatedly bathed that summer in an irrigation pool in the area. Two of them presented macroscopic hematuria with bilharziomas, showing the presence of Schistosoma eggs in bladder biopsies. Two others were asymptomatic but the serology for schisto somiasis was positive. In 2015, the presence of the vector Bulinus truncatus was demonstrated in Almería in water collections of appropriate characteristics. DNA sequencing proving that local B. truncatus species were base-to base identical to B. truncatus from Senegal. Conclusions: We present a new outbreak of autochthonous transmission of urogenital schistosomiasis in Europe. Although no new cases of autochthonous transmission have been reported, some other cases may have occurred at that time or later on and be unnoticed as many cases of schistosomiasis are asymptomatic or present mild and unspecific symptoms
