    Vibration-tolerant narrow-linewidth semiconductor disk laser using novel frequency-stabilisation schemes

    This paper will present developments in narrow-linewidth semiconductor-disk-laser systems using novel frequency-stabilisation schemes for reduced sensitivity to mechanical vibrations, a critical requirement for mobile applications. Narrow-linewidth single-frequency lasers are required for a range of applications including metrology and high-resolution spectroscopy. Stabilisation of the laser was achieved using a monolithic fibre-optic ring resonator with free spectral range of 181 MHz and finesse of 52 to act as passive reference cavity for the laser. Such a cavity can operate over a broad wavelength range and is immune to a wide band of vibrational frequency noise due to its monolithic implementation. The frequency noise of the locked system has been measured and compared to typical Fabry-Perot-locked lasers using vibration equipment to simulate harsh environments, and analysed here. Locked linewidths of < 40 kHz have been achieved. These developments offer a portable, narrow-linewidth laser system for harsh environments that can be flexibly designed for a range of applications

    AbstractObjectivesOur objective was to evaluate the efficacy of triphasic waveforms for transthoracic defibrillation in a swine model.BackgroundTriphasic shocks have been found to cause less post-shock dysfunction than biphasic shocks in chick embryo studies.MethodsAfter 30 s of electrically induced ventricular fibrillation (VF), each pig in part I (n = 32) received truncated exponential biphasic (7.2/7.2 ms) and triphasic (4.8/4.8/4.8 ms) transthoracic shocks. Each pig in part II (n = 14) received biphasic (5/5 ms) and triphasic shocks (5/5/5 ms). Three selected energy levels (50, 100, and 150 J) were tested for parts I and II. Pigs in part III (n = 13) received biphasic (5/5 ms) and triphasic (5/5/5 ms) shocks at a higher energy (200 and 300 J). Although the individual pulse durations of these shocks were equal, the energy of each pulse varied. Nine pigs in part I also received shocks where each individual pulse contained equal energy but was of a different duration (biphasic 3.3/11.1 ms; triphasic 2.0/3.2/9.2 ms).ResultsTriphasic shocks of equal duration pulses achieved higher success than biphasic shocks at delivered low energies: <40 J: 38 ± 5% triphasic vs. 19 ± 4% biphasic (p < 0.01); 40 to <50 J: 66 ± 7% vs. 42 ± 7% (p < 0.01); and 50 to <65 J: 78 ± 4% vs. 54 ± 5% (p < 0.05). Shocks of equal energy but different duration pulses achieved relatively poor success for both triphasic and biphasic waveforms. Shock-induced ventricular tachycardia (VT) and asystole occurred less often after triphasic shocks.ConclusionsTriphasic transthoracic shocks composed of equal duration pulses were superior to biphasic shocks for VF termination at low energies and caused less VT and asystole

    Copy-number variation in BMPR2 is not associated with the pathogenesis of pulmonary arterial hypertension

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Copy-number variations (CNVs) are structural variations in the genome involving 1 kb to 3 mb of DNA. CNV has been reported within intron 1 of the <it>BMPR2 </it>gene. We propose that CNV could affect phenotype in familial and/or sporadic pulmonary arterial hypertension (PAH) by altering gene expression.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>97 human DNA samples were obtained which included 24 patients with familial PAH, 18 obligate carriers (<it>BMPR2 </it>mutation positive), 20 sporadic PAH patients, and 35 controls. Two sets of primers were designed within the CNV, and two sets of control primers were designed outside the CNV. Quantitative PCR was performed to quantify genomic copies of CNV and control sequences.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A CNV in <it>BMPR2 </it>was present in one African American negative control subject.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We conclude that the CNV in intron 1 in <it>BMPR2 </it>is unlikely to play a role in the pathogenesis of either familial or sporadic PAH.</p> <p>Trial Registration</p> <p>NIH NCT00091546.</p

    Violent Inaction: The Necropolitical Experience of Refugees In Europe

    A significant outcome of the global crisis for refugees has been the abandonment of refugees to survive in makeshift camps inside the EU. This paper details how state authorities have prevented refugees from surviving with formal provision, leading directly to thousands having to live in hazardous spaces such as the informal camp in Calais, the site of this study. We then explore the violent consequences of this abandonment. By bringing together thus far poorly integrated literatures on bio/necropolitics (Foucault 1997, Mbembe 2003) and structural violence (Galtung 1969), we trace the connections between deliberate political indifference towards refugees and the physiological violence they suffer. In framing the management of refugees as a series of violent inactions, we demonstrate how the biopolitics of migrant control has given way to necropolitical brutality. Advancing geographies of migration, the paper argues that political inaction, as well as action, can be used as a means of control

    Cyanogenesis of Wild Lima Bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) Is an Efficient Direct Defence in Nature

    In natural systems plants face a plethora of antagonists and thus have evolved multiple defence strategies. Lima bean (Phaseolus lunatus L.) is a model plant for studies of inducible indirect anti-herbivore defences including the production of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and extrafloral nectar (EFN). In contrast, studies on direct chemical defence mechanisms as crucial components of lima beans' defence syndrome under natural conditions are nonexistent. In this study, we focus on the cyanogenic potential (HCNp; concentration of cyanogenic glycosides) as a crucial parameter determining lima beans' cyanogenesis, i.e. the release of toxic hydrogen cyanide from preformed precursors. Quantitative variability of cyanogenesis in a natural population of wild lima bean in Mexico was significantly correlated with missing leaf area. Since existing correlations do not by necessity mean causal associations, the function of cyanogenesis as efficient plant defence was subsequently analysed in feeding trials. We used natural chrysomelid herbivores and clonal lima beans with known cyanogenic features produced from field-grown mother plants. We show that in addition to extensively investigated indirect defences, cyanogenesis has to be considered as an important direct defensive trait affecting lima beans' overall defence in nature. Our results indicate the general importance of analysing ‘multiple defence syndromes’ rather than single defence mechanisms in future functional analyses of plant defences
