UIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020Various disciplines have studied the Space and Time categories over time, both separately and together. For humans, according to Tuan, “The experience of space and time is largely subconscious” (2014, p. 118). As in human experience, these two categories are inseparable in narrative genre because “‘story time’ emerges from the interplay of space, events, characters, and plot structure” (Scheffel, 2014). The inseparability of Space and Time is also present and visible in a city, as shown by several authors. Concerning these two categories, in Nuno Bragança’s novel Directa, the author explores simultaneously the potential offered by the city of Lisbon and the narrative genre. In this chapter, we intend to show how the author treats space and time in the novel, especially, how he uses the practice of the city space as an intentional way to establish and treat various times and build essential messages of the work, especially through hero maps and routes, and reflections.publishersversionpublishe

UIDB/04666/2020 UIDP/04666/2020Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen’s book Navigations was inspired by the experience of the author’s first contact with the East, during a plane trip to Macao to pay homage to Camões. The view of the coasts of Vietnam will have led Sophia to imagine the wonder and astonishment experienced by the Portuguese navigators who first arrived there by sea. Therefore, this book commemorates the Portuguese Discoveries, in the line of Camões and Pessoa, but that takes a new and original look on the theme. Therefore, these Navigations are an initiatory journey, from which results the discovery of Being, that is, in some way, a kind of circumnavigation voyage, the return to the beginning.publishersversionpublishe

If you wish to use this manuscript for commercial purposes, please contact [email protected]'The usage of robot waiters in the hospitality industry is growing, thus increasing the number of human–robot interactions in frontline services. Focusing on robot waiters in restaurants, this study aims to propose the social cognition (SC)–psychological ownership (PO)–customer responses (CR) model, while examining the association between SC, PO, robot anthropomorphism and CR

Smart speakers and customer experience in service contexts

The use of artificial intelligence‐based devices, such as smart speakers, is rising in frontline services, as such devices can perform several tasks for customers. However, little is known about customer responses to interactions with smart speakers that occur during service encounters. This research encompasses three studies intended to enhance our currently scarce knowledge of how customers respond to interactions with smart speakers during service encounters. Focusing on the hospitality industry, the first study shows that smart speakers improve evaluations of the hotels that use them in terms of customer ratings and positive affects. The second study demonstrates that automated social presence and psychological ownership feelings are key mechanisms that explain the development of valuable customer responses. The third study, which uses virtual reality, suggests that better actual behaviors are exhibited by people who appreciate the incorporation of smart speakers into services. Thus, the findings indicate that smart speakers improve service experiences, especially if used to carry out hedonic tasks usually performed by employeesMinisterio de Ciencia e Innovación (PID2020‐ 113561RB‐I00; PID2019‐105468RB‐I00; TED2021‐129513B‐C22) and European Social Fund and the Government of Aragon (Group “METODO” S20_20R; LMP51_21

Service brand coolness in the construction of brand loyalty: a self-presentation theory approach

As service brands need to find new methods to overcome consumers' distrust of physical spaces in the post-COVID-19 era, we explore how niche and mass service brands can recover their experiential value through perceptions of coolness. In three studies, we evaluate service brand coolness and its consequences for communal–brand connection and loyalty. In Studies 1 and 2, we examine consumers’ thoughts on coolness and communal connection when describing their encounters with service brands. In Study 3, we test the relations among service brand coolness, communal–brand connection, and loyalty. Our findings show that for both niche and mass firms, service brand coolness similarly enhances communal–brand connection and loyaltyThis research was funded by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation, grant number PID2020-113561RB-I0

Scans for signatures of selection in Russian cattle breed genomes reveal new candidate genes for environmental adaptation and acclimation

    Get PDF
Domestication and selective breeding has resulted in over 1000 extant cattle breeds. Many of these breeds do not excel in important traits but are adapted to local environments. These adaptations are a valuable source of genetic material for efforts to improve commercial breeds. As a step toward this goal we identified candidate regions to be under selection in genomes of nine Russian native cattle breeds adapted to survive in harsh climates. After comparing our data to other breeds of European and Asian origins we found known and novel candidate genes that could potentially be related to domestication, economically important traits and environmental adaptations in cattle. The Russian cattle breed genomes contained regions under putative selection with genes that may be related to adaptations to harsh environments (e.g., AQP5, RAD50, and RETREG1). We found genomic signatures of selective sweeps near key genes related to economically important traits, such as the milk production (e.g., DGAT1, ABCG2), growth (e.g., XKR4), and reproduction (e.g., CSF2). Our data point to candidate genes which should be included in future studies attempting to identify genes to improve the extant breeds and facilitate generation of commercial breeds that fit better into the environments of Russia and other countries with similar climates
