Dark Scalar Doublets and Neutrino Tribimaximal Mixing from A_4 Symmetry
In the context of A_4 symmetry, neutrino tribimaximal mixing is achieved
through the breaking of A_4 to Z_3 (Z_2) in the charged-lepton (neutrino)
sector respectively. The implied vacuum misalignment of the (1,1,1) and (1,0,0)
directions in A_4 space is a difficult technical problem, and cannot be treated
without many auxiliary fields and symmetries (and perhaps extra dimensions). It
is pointed out here that an alternative scenario exists with A_4 alone and no
redundant fields, if neutrino masses are "scotogenic", i.e. radiatively induced

Potential of mathematical modeling in fruit quality
A review of mathematical modeling applied to fruit quality showed that these models ranged inresolution from simple yield equations to complex  representations of processes as respiration, photosynthesis and assimilation of nutrients. The latter models take into account complex  genotype environment interactions to estimate their effects on growth and yield. Recently, models are used to estimate seasonal changes in quality traits as fruit size, dry matter, water content and the concentration of sugars and acids, which are very important for flavor and aroma. These models have demonstrated their ability to generate relationships between physiological variables and quality attributes (allometric relations). This new kind of hybrid models has sufficient complexity to predict quality traits behavior
ChaLearn Looking at People Challenge 2014: Dataset and Results
This paper summarizes the ChaLearn Looking at People 2014 challenge data and the results obtained by the participants. The competition was split into three independent tracks: human pose recovery from RGB data, action and interaction recognition from RGB data sequences, and multi-modal gesture recognition from RGB-Depth sequences. For all the tracks, the goal was to perform user-independent recognition in sequences of continuous images using the overlapping Jaccard index as the evaluation measure. In this edition of the ChaLearn challenge, two large novel data sets were made publicly available and the Microsoft Codalab platform were used to manage the competition. Outstanding results were achieved in the three challenge tracks, with accuracy results of 0.20, 0.50, and 0.85 for pose recovery, action/interaction recognition, and multi-modal gesture recognition, respectively
Sub-kiloparsec Imaging of Cool Molecular Gas in Two Strongly Lensed Dusty, Star-Forming Galaxies
We present spatially-resolved imaging obtained with the Australia Telescope
Compact Array (ATCA) of three CO lines in two high-redshift gravitationally
lensed dusty star-forming galaxies, discovered by the South Pole Telescope.
Strong lensing allows us to probe the structure and dynamics of the molecular
gas in these two objects, at z=2.78 and z=5.66, with effective source-plane
resolution of less than 1kpc. We model the lensed emission from multiple CO
transitions and the dust continuum in a consistent manner, finding that the
cold molecular gas as traced by low-J CO always has a larger half-light radius
than the 870um dust continuum emission. This size difference leads to up to 50%
differences in the magnification factor for the cold gas compared to dust. In
the z=2.78 galaxy, these CO observations confirm that the background source is
undergoing a major merger, while the velocity field of the other source is more
complex. We use the ATCA CO observations and comparable resolution Atacama
Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array dust continuum imaging of the same objects
to constrain the CO-H_2 conversion factor with three different procedures,
finding good agreement between the methods and values consistent with those
found for rapidly star-forming systems. We discuss these galaxies in the
context of the star formation - gas mass surface density relation, noting that
the change in emitting area with observed CO transition must be accounted for
when comparing high-redshift galaxies to their lower redshift counterparts.Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures; accepted for publication in Ap
Recycled cellulose from Tetra Pak packaging as reinforcement of polyester based composites
Addressing the environmental problems caused by waste generated by Tetra Pak packaging, in this work, polyester based composites with 80% of polyester resin and 20% of silica sand were elaborated; where the silica sand was partially replaced by recycled cellulose from waste Tetra Pak containers at concentrations of 1, 2, 4 and 6% by weight. Both recycled cellulose and composite specimens were subjected to ionizing radiation process by using gamma rays. The results show improvements on the mechanical properties (compressive and flexural strength as well as modulus of elasticity) of the composites when they are irradiated at 100 and 200 kGy. Such improvements can be related with the structural modifications caused by gamma irradiation on the cellulose fibers, including changes in the morphology and the crystallinity; which were analyzed through to SEM, IR and XRD techniques
Association of VAV2 and VAV3 polymorphisms with cardiovascular risk factors
Hypertension, diabetes and obesity are cardiovascular risk factors closely associated to the development of renal and cardiovascular target organ damage. VAV2 and VAV3, members of the VAV family proto-oncogenes, are guanosine nucleotide exchange factors for the Rho and Rac GTPase family, which is related with cardiovascular homeostasis. We have analyzed the relationship between the presence of VAV2 rs602990 and VAV3 rs7528153 polymorphisms with cardiovascular risk factors and target organ damage (heart, vessels and kidney) in 411 subjects. Our results show that being carrier of the T allele in VAV2 rs602990 polymorphism is associated with an increased risk of obesity, reduced levels of ankle-brachial index and diastolic blood pressure and reduced retinal artery caliber. In addition, being carrier of T allele is associated with increased risk of target organ damage in males. On the other hand, being carrier of the T allele in VAV3 rs7528153 polymorphism is associated with a decreased susceptibility of developing a pathologic state composed by the presence of hypertension, diabetes, obesity or cardiovascular damage, and with an increased risk of developing altered basal glycaemia. This is the first report showing an association between VAV2 and VAV3 polymorphisms with cardiovascular risk factors and target organ damage
Gamma radiation as a recycling tool for waste materials used in concrete
Over the course of the last 50 years, a large number of major technological advances have contributed to the development of higher-strength, high-performance materials that provide excellent benefits. Nevertheless, in most cases, after a very short useful life, these products become waste material and contribute to environmental degra‐ dation. This situation has created an environmental crisis that has reached global proportions. In efforts to combat this issue and to promote sustainable development and reduce environmental pollution, some investigations have focused on recycling using innovative and clean technologies, such as gamma radiation, as an alternative to conventional mechanical and chemical recycling procedures. In this context, the reuse and recycling of waste materials and the use of gamma radiation are useful tools for improving the mechanical properties of concrete; for example, the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity are improved by the addition of waste particles and application of gamma radiation. In this chapter, we propose the use of gamma radiation as a method for modifying waste materials; for instance, polyethylene terephthalate plastic bottles, automotive tire rubber, and the cellulose in Tetra Pak containers, and their reuse to enhance the properties of concrete
