    The Effect of Tropical Storm Agnes on Oysters, Hard Clams, Soft Clams, and Oyster Drills in VIrginia

    Tropical Storm Agnes had a major effect on the molluscan fisheries of Virginia. One effect was the direct mortality of oysters, Crassostrea virginiaa, in the upper parts of many estuaries. Typical losses on leased bottoms were: the James River, 10%; the York River, 2%; the Rappahannock River, 50%; and the Potomac River tributaries (Virginia) 70%. Economic loss was in excess of 7.9 million dollars. There was a nearly complete absence of oyster larvae attachment (setting) in 1972. Other effects of Agnes included a nearly complete loss of soft clams, Mya arenaria, in the Rappahannock River. Hard clams, Meraenaria meraenaria, were killed in the upper part of the York River. Oyster drills, Urosalpinx ainerea, were eliminated from the Rappahannock and reduced greatly in numbers in the York and James Rivers.https://scholarworks.wm.edu/vimsbooks/1074/thumbnail.jp

    The sl(2)sl(2) minimal theories are labelled by a Lie algebra pair (A,G)(A,G) where GG is of AA-DD-EE type. For these theories on a cylinder we conjecture a complete set of conformal boundary conditions labelled by the nodes of the tensor product graph AβŠ—GA\otimes G. The cylinder partition functions are given by fusion rules arising from the graph fusion algebra of AβŠ—GA\otimes G. We further conjecture that, for each conformal boundary condition, an integrable boundary condition exists as a solution of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation for the associated lattice model.     Optimization of a Langmuir-Taylor detector for lithium

    This paper describes the construction and optimization of a Langmuir-Taylor detector for lithium, using a rhenium ribbon. The absolute detection probability of this very sensitive detector is measured and the dependence of this probability with oxygen pressure and surface temperature is studied. Sources of background signal and their minimization are also discussed in details. And a comparison between our data concerning the response time of the detector and literature values is given. A theoretical analysis has been made: this analysis supports the validity of the Saha-Langmuir law to relate the ionization probability to the work function.     Inheritance of Resistance to the First and Second Broods of the European Corn Borer in Corn

    The European corn borer is one of the most destructive insect pests of corn. Our objective was to determine the inheritance of host resistance in corn to the first and second broods of the European corn borer with Design III and S1 progeny analyses. All estimates of additive and dominance genetic variances were significantly different from zero except for the dominance variance for second-brood cavity counts. Additive genetic variance, however, was the major component of the total genotypic variance in the F2 population for all traits. Average level of dominance was in the partial range for the date of anthesis (0.74), first-brood leaf feeding (0.81), and second-brood cavity counts (0.53), but in the range for complete dominance (1.09) for the second-brood visual rating. Some genes have dominance action in conditioning resistance to first and second broods of the European corn borer. Selection procedures that emphasize selection for additive genetic variance in the population for first- and second-brood larval feeding resistance would be effective for improving host resistance

    Theoretical description of adiabatic laser alignment and mixed-field orientation: the need for a non-adiabatic model

    We present a theoretical study of recent laser-alignment and mixed-field-orientation experiments of asymmetric top molecules. In these experiments, pendular states were created using linearly polarized strong ac electric fields from pulsed lasers in combination with weak electrostatic fields. We compare the outcome of our calculations with experimental results obtained for the prototypical large molecule benzonitrile (C7_7H5_5N) [J.L. Hansen et al, Phys. Rev. A, 83, 023406 (2011)] and explore the directional properties of the molecular ensemble for several field configurations, i.e., for various field strengths and angles between ac and dc fields. For perpendicular fields one obtains pure alignment, which is well reproduced by the simulations. For tilted fields, we show that a fully adiabatic description of the process does not reproduce the experimentally observed orientation, and it is mandatory to use a diabatic model for population transfer between rotational states. We develop such a model and compare its outcome to the experimental data confirming the importance of non-adiabatic processes in the field-dressed molecular dynamics.Comment: 11 pages, 9 figure

    Endothelin-1 as a neuropeptide: neurotransmitter or neurovascular effects?

    Endothelin-1 (ET-1) is an endothelium-derived peptide that also possesses potent mitogenic activity. There is also a suggestion the ET-1 is a neuropeptide, based mainly on its histological identification in both the central and peripheral nervous system in a number of species, including man. A neuropeptide role for ET-1 is supported by studies showing a variety of effects caused following its administration into different regions of the brain and by application to peripheral nerves. In addition there are studies proposing that ET-1 is implicated in a number of neural circuits where its transmitter affects range from a role in pain and temperature control to its action on the hypothalamo-neurosecretory system. While the effect of ET-1 on nerve tissue is beyond doubt, its action on nerve blood flow is often ignored. Here, we review data generated in a number of species and using a variety of experimental models. Studies range from those showing the distribution of ET-1 and its receptors in nerve tissue to those describing numerous neurally-mediated effects of ET-1

    Chemotherapeutic agents subvert tumor immunity by generating agonists of platelet-activating factor

    Oxidative stress suppresses host immunity by generating oxidized lipid agonists of the platelet-activating factor receptor (PAF-R). Because many classical chemotherapeutic drugs induce reactive oxygen species (ROS), we investigated whether these drugs might subvert host immunity by activating PAF-R. Here, we show that PAF-R agonists are produced in melanoma cells by chemotherapy that is administered in vitro, in vivo, or in human subjects. Structural characterization of the PAF-R agonists induced revealed multiple oxidized glycerophosphocholines that are generated nonenzymatically. In a murine model of melanoma, chemotherapeutic administration could augment tumor growth by a PAF-R-dependent process that could be blocked by treatment with antioxidants or COX-2 inhibitors or by depletion of regulatory T cells. Our findings reveal how PAF-R agonists induced by chemotherapy treatment can promote treatment failure. Furthermore, they offer new insights into how to improve the efficacy of chemotherapy by blocking its heretofore unknown impact on PAF-R activation

    An enhanced model for digital reference services

    Digital Reference Service (DRS) play a vital role in the Digital Library (DL) research. DRS is a very valuable service provided by DL. Unfortunately, the reference service movement towards digital environment begins late, and this shift was not model based. So, a journey towards a digital environment without following a proper model raises some issues. A few researchers presented a general process model (GPM) in the late 1990s, but this process model could not overcome the problems of DRS. This paper proposes an enhanced model for DRS that use the storage and re-use mechanism with other vital components like DRS search engine and ready reference for solving the issues in DRS. Initially, storage and re-use mechanism are designed and finally, DRS search engine is designed to search appropriate answers in the knowledge base. We improved the GPM by incorporating the new components. The simulation results clearly states that the proposed model increased the service efficiency by reducing the response time from days to seconds for repeated questions and decreased the workload of librarian

    Testing the FMR1 Promoter for Mosaicism in DNA Methylation among CpG Sites, Strands, and Cells in FMR1-Expressing Males with Fragile X Syndrome

    Variability among individuals in the severity of fragile X syndrome (FXS) is influenced by epigenetic methylation mosaicism, which may also be common in other complex disorders. The epigenetic signal of dense promoter DNA methylation is usually associated with gene silencing, as was initially reported for FMR1 alleles in individuals with FXS. A paradox arose when significant levels of FMR1 mRNA were reported for some males with FXS who had been reported to have predominately methylated alleles. We have used hairpin-bisufite PCR, validated with molecular batch-stamps and barcodes, to collect and assess double-stranded DNA methylation patterns from these previously studied males. These patterns enable us to distinguish among three possible forms of methylation mosaicism, any one of which could explain FMR1 expression in these males. Our data indicate that cryptic inter-cell mosaicism in DNA methylation can account for the presence of FMR1 mRNA in some individuals with FXS
