The impact of aging and language proficiency on the interhemispheric dynamics for discourse processing: a nirs study
The study of the bilingual and of the aging brain has the potential to offer important evidences for our understanding of the cerebral dynamics for language processing. There is a special need of studies to investigate discourse processing by these populations. In this study, intermediate-proficiency bilinguals (English as L1 and French as L2) and elderly individuals' narrative processing at the micro-, macro-structural and situational levels were investigated, by the application of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). Participants read narratives followed by probes, which tapped one of the three levels, and judged the plausibility of their information by reference to the corresponding passage. The findings brought by the study suggest the possibility of the application of similar theoretical approaches to explain language processing in these two populations. Although emerging from different reasons (aging or low proficiency in the L2), the deficits or limitations brought to language comprehension generate some comparable inter-hemispheric patterns in brain hemodynamics (for instance that of more relevant, wider and in some cases bilateral hemodynamic changes), which are compatible with the theoretical framework proposed by Banich and colleagues. Thus, it seems to be arguable that in both populations the hemispheres tended to cooperate and share the costs for task processing, or demanded an increased activation in the recruited area in order to accomplish the task. Similarly to the assumptions made by the model, it seems to be plausible to state that the increase of activation within a region and/or the interhemispheric contributions were positively correlated to the amount of task difficulty
This article analyzes reading comprehension by investigating the understanding of implicit discourse relations by 1st year Elementary School children, according to the pragmatic integrated model of Interpretation/Comprehension (Dascal, 2006). In the study, special attention was given to investigating the establishment of the distinction between literal and intentional meaning (Torrance and Olson, 1999;Olson, 1997). Ten children aged 6 to 7 participated in a digital reading test. Results indicate that the majority of the children focused on single words meanings, which suggest that they do not distinguish between âsayingâ and âmeaning to sayâ, nor depicted the thematic unit, reflecting precarious development of textual awareness. Moreover, the study demonstrates that the children did not understand the irony present in one of the texts, despite capturing other types of implicit meanings, such as presuppositions and indirect speech acts.Key words: reading, pragmatic integrated model, literacy, textual implicit meanings.
This article presents a reflection about hypertext, which references mainly some aspects of Linguistics and Information Technology. Two different approaches, although antagonistic towards each other, are considered here to analyze the hypertext as a theoretical concept. The first is held by authors who advocate hypertext as being a metaphor of thought. The other view, which is held by Information Technology enthusiasts, is in favor of the development offered by digital technologies in the production of such textuality recognized as hypertext. The point of confluence of these theoretical frameworks is provided here in order to inter-relate such approaches with hypertextuality and the use of digital dictionaries.O presente artigo apresenta uma reflexĂŁo acerca do conceito de hipertexto, tendo como referĂȘncia elementos da linguĂstica e da informĂĄtica, principalmente.

Adaptation of Neuropsychological Verbal Instruments: A Fluxogram of Procedures far Beyond Translation
A very recurrent practice in Brazilian clinics still nowadays is the adoption of translated versions of neuropsychological instruments internationally standardized. It is fundamental that diagnostic tools have their instructions and stimuli adapted to the Brazilian linguistic, cultural and social reality, so that they accurately and reliably measure the cognitive processes that they are meant to assess. This theoretical review article aims to reflect on the specificities underlying the adaptation of verbal neuropsychological instruments, proposing a fluxogram of procedures for neuropsycholinguistic adaptation which transcends mere translation. This fluxogram was derived from the literature on psychological, neuropsychological, phonoaudiological assessments, and from the authorsâ clinical and scientific experience in the construction and adaptation of tools for the evaluation of cognitive performance by means of verbal stimuli. It encompasses specific procedures comprising three groups of general procedures: translation, judgesâ analysis and pilot study. The continuous contact with the researchers who are the authors of the original instrument is highlighted as representing an essential phase. The ongoing adaptation process with neuropsychometric procedures is briefly discussed. Keywords: neuropsychological assessment; adaptation; verbal tests; language; neuropsycholinguistics
Generation of neutralizing antibodies and divergence of SIVmac239 in cynomolgus macaques following short-term early antiretroviral therapy.
Neutralizing antibodies (NAb) able to react to heterologous viruses are generated during natural HIV-1 infection in some individuals. Further knowledge is required in order to understand the factors contributing to induction of cross-reactive NAb responses. Here a well-established model of experimental pathogenic infection in cynomolgus macaques, which reproduces long-lasting HIV-1 infection, was used to study the NAb response as well as the viral evolution of the highly neutralization-resistant SIVmac239. Twelve animals were infected intravenously with SIVmac239. Antiretroviral therapy (ART) was initiated ten days post-inoculation and administered daily for four months. Viral load, CD4(+) T-cell counts, total IgG levels, and breadth as well as strength of NAb in plasma were compared simultaneously over 14 months. In addition, envs from plasma samples were sequenced at three time points in all animals in order to assess viral evolution. We report here that seven of the 12 animals controlled viremia to below 10(4) copies/ml of plasma after discontinuation of ART and that this control was associated with a low level of evolutionary divergence. Macaques that controlled viral load developed broader NAb responses early on. Furthermore, escape mutations, such as V67M and R751G, were identified in virus sequenced from all animals with uncontrolled viremia. Bayesian estimation of ancestral population genetic diversity (PGD) showed an increase in this value in non-controlling or transient-controlling animals during the first 5.5 months of infection, in contrast to virus-controlling animals. Similarly, non- or transient controllers displayed more positively-selected amino-acid substitutions. An early increase in PGD, resulting in the generation of positively-selected amino-acid substitutions, greater divergence and relative high viral load after ART withdrawal, may have contributed to the generation of potent NAb in several animals after SIVmac239 infection. However, early broad NAb responses correlated with relatively preserved CD4(+) T-cell numbers, low viral load and limited viral divergence
