In the light of the work of art of Santiago Sierra, 245 cubic meters (2006), this paper analyse the variety of reactions that the (re)creation of traumatic events in history and memory might generate. The work of Sierra recreated a gas chamber inside what used to be the Stommeln synagogue in Pulheim, a small town in Germany. The Spanish artist arranged a number of cars outside the building and pumped carbon monoxide from their exhausts through tubing into the disused synagogue. The reaction of some Jewish communities was immediate and the exhibition was closed just one week after its opening. This synagogue has not been used for worship since the Second World War, but was reopened in 1991 as a memorial place where every year artists are invited to honour the victims of the holocaust this was the very first time that one of the artistic projects was closed so immediately. Sierra himself said that he had no intention whatsoever to offend the sensibility of the victims, but the opposite in fact. I explore here the possible origins of the controversy, which perhaps did not arise from feelings of offence since there seems to be some evidence that might point towards other hypothesis.

On How Fas Apoptosis-Independent Pathways Drive T Cell Hyperproliferation and Lymphadenopathy in lpr Mice

All rights reserved. it is reproduced with permission.Fas induces massive apoptosis in T cells after repeated in vitro T cell receptor (TCR) stimulation and is critical for lymphocyte homeostasis in Fas-deficient (lpr) mice. Although the in vitro Fas apoptotic mechanism has been defined, there is a large conceptual gap between this in vitro phenomenon and the pathway that leads to in vivo development of lymphadenopathy and autoimmunity. A striking abnormality in lpr mice is the excessive proliferation of CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and more so of the double-negative TCR+CD4−CD8−B220+ T cells. The basis of lpr T cell hyperproliferation remains elusive, as it cannot be explained by Fas-deficient apoptosis. T cell-directed p21 overexpression reduces hyperactivation/hyperproliferation of all lpr T cell subtypes and lymphadenopathy in lpr mice. p21 controls expansion of repeatedly stimulated T cells without affecting apoptosis. These results confirm a direct link between hyperactivation/hyperproliferation, autoreactivity, and lymphadenopathy in lpr mice and, with earlier studies, suggest that Fas apoptosis-independent pathways control lpr T cell hyperproliferation. lpr T cell hyperproliferation could be an indirect result of the defective apoptosis of repeatedly stimulated lpr T cells. Nonetheless, in this perspective, we argue for an alternative setting, in which lack of Fas would directly cause lpr T cell hyperactivation/hyperproliferation in vivo. We propose that Fas/Fas ligand (FasL) acts as an activation inhibitor of recurrently stimulated T cells, and that its disruption causes overexpansion of T cells in lpr mice. Research to define the underlying mechanism of this Fas/FasL effect could resolve the phenotype of lpr mice and lead to therapeutics for related human syndromes. This work was supported by grants from the Ministry of Economy and Competitivity (MINECO/FEDER PI11/00950 and SAF2016-80803-R to DB, and SAF2013-42289-R and SAF2016-75456-R to CM-A), from the Fundación Alfonso Martin Escudero to CM-A, and from the Community of Madrid (MITIC S2011/BMD2502 to DB and CM-A).Peer reviewe

The whole front-end is implemented in a 2P6M 0.18 µm RFCMOS process. It exhibits a voltage gain of 24dB and a SSB noise figure of 8.4dB which make it suitable for most of the 2.5 GHz wireless short-range communication transceivers. The achieved power consumption is only 1.06mW from a 1.2V power supply.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version

Producción CientíficaNetwork Function Virtualization (NFV) is considered to be one of the enabling technologies for 5G. NFV poses several challenges, like deciding the virtual network function (VNF) placement and chaining, and adding backup resources to guarantee the survivability of service chains. In this paper, we propose a genetic algorithm that jointly solves the VNF-placement, chaining and virtual topology design problem in WDM metro ring network, with the additional capacity of providing node protection. The simulation results show how important is to solve all of these subproblems jointly, as well as the benefits of using shared VNF and network resources between backup instances in order to reduce both the service blocking ratio and the number of active CPUs.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (grant TEC2017-84423-C3-1-P)Ministerio de Industria, Comercio y Turismo (grant BES 2015-074514)INTERREG V-A España-Portugal (POCTEP) (grant 0677_DISRUPTIVE_2_E)

Utilizing a large-scale drug screening in patient-derived xenografts, we uncover driver gene alteration connections, derive driver co-occurrence (DCO) networks, and relate these to drug sensitivity. Our collection of 53 drug-response predictors attains an average balanced accuracy of 58% in a cross-validation setting, rising to 66% for a subset of high-confidence predictions. We experimentally validated 12 out of 14 predictions in mice and adapted our strategy to obtain drug-response models from patients' progression-free survival data. Our strategy reveals links between oncogenic alterations, increasing the clinical impact of genomic profiling

Producción CientíficaNetwork Function Virtualization (NFV) is a promising networking paradigm that will ease the network manageability and increase its flexibility, while reducing costs. In this paradigm, operators must solve the Virtual Network Function (VNF) placement and chaining problems. It is also important to provide backup resources to ensure the survivability of the offered services when a node failure happens. In this paper, we compare two different protection approaches to ensure the service resilience: individual VNF protection and end-to-end protection. Results show the benefits in terms of use of computing resources and energy consumption of protecting each VNF individually, compared to the end-to-end protection approach.

According to different studies, vocation, excessive expectations and ideals disconnected from reality are presented as a facilitating factor in the emergence of Burnout. This research looks for studding the relation between professional vocation and burnout syndrome in medical scope. Maslach inventory and other socio-demographic questions are given to 43 participants with different features. The obtained results show that there is an important inverse correlation between vocation and emotional exhaustion. The relation between vocation and depersonalisation did not make any significant result, but there is a relation, indeed. Finally, the direct relation between vocation and personal realisation is also important. Therefore, personal realisation increases at the same time as vocation does.Universidad de Granada. Producción Científica5G technology will provide networks with high-bandwidth, low latency and multitenancy. The integration of computing and storage resources in the edge of the fronthaul network, i.e., multi-access edge computing (MEC), will allow to instantiate some virtual network functions (VNF) in those computing resources. The backhaul of 5G networks will be based on optical technology, in particular WDM, due to its high capacity and flexibility. In this paper, we analyse the problem of VNF-provisioning in a metro ring-topology network equipped with MEC resources and with a WDM network connecting the edge nodes. In contrast to previous proposals, the method decides where VNFs must be instantiated but also the design of the virtual topology for the WDM metro network in order to reduce the service blocking ratio and the number of resources in operation.Ministerio de Economía, Industria y Competitividad (project TEC2017-84423-C3-1-P)Ministerio de Industria, Energía y Turismo (project BES-2015-074514
