Pyodermas: Diagnosis and Treatment
The diagnosis and treatment of cutaneous infections appear to be rather straightforward at first glance. Major texts of pediatrics and dermatology indicate that the vast majority of pyodermas are due to either Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) or Streptococcus pyogenes and that antibiotics are curative. On closer scrutiny, however, one quickly becomes aware that there is a great deal of nomenclatural confusion with a corresponding lack of clarity regarding therapy – particularly on the point of whether or not topical antibiotics have any place in therapy
Acne Vulgaris
Acne vulgaris displays all the characteristics of a polygenic disorder in that hereditary factors are apparent with strong family tendencies for the disorder while the phenotypic expression of the disease varies over a wide spectrum. All that is known for certain concerning the genetics of acne is that concordance is extremely high in identical twins. In the past decade, various investigations have resulted in much clearer concepts of pathogenesis and have brought us to the point of effective therapy for the majority of cases. In this report, I will summarize recent concepts in the pathogenesis of acne vulgaris
Visuo-spatial abilities in chess players
The extent to which the acquisition of expertise in knowledge-rich domains, such as chess, can be influenced by general individual characteristics, such as intelligence, has remained unclear. Some previous studies with children have documented significant correlations between chess skill and performance on some psychometric tests, such as performance IQ (Frydman & Lynn, 1992). However, we found no evidence for a correlation between chess skill and visual memory ability in a group of adult chess players (n=36, age = 28.4). This finding, together with other data in the literature, suggests that there is surprisingly little evidence that chess skill and visuo-spatial ability are associated in adults. Thus, visual memory ability, and perhaps visuo-spatial intelligence, may be relatively unimportant factors in the long-term acquisition of chess skill

Nearly Antiferromagnetic Fermi Liquids: A Progress Report
I describe recent theoretical and experimental progress in understanding the
physical properties of the two dimensional nearly antiferromagnetic Fermi
liquids (NAFL's) found in the normal state of the cuprate superconductors. In
such NAFL's, the magnetic interaction between planar quasiparticles is strong
and peaked at or near the commensurate wave vector, . For
the optimally doped and underdoped systems, the resulting strong
antiferromagnetic correlations produce three distinct magnetic phases in the
normal state: mean field above , pseudoscaling between and
, and pseudogap below . I present arguments which suggest that the
physical origin of the pseudogap found in the quasiparticle spectrum below
is the formation of a precursor to a spin-density-wave-state, describe
the calculations based on this scenario of the dynamical spin susceptibility,
Fermi surface evolution, transport, and Hall effect, and summarize the

Late Quaternary palaeoenvironment of northern Guatemala: evidence from deep drill cores and seismic stratigraphy of Lake Petén Itzá
Long sediment cores were collected in spring 2006 from Lake Petén Itzá, northern Guatemala, in water depths ranging from 30 to 150 m, as part of an International Continental Scientific Drilling Program project. The sediment records from deep water consist mainly of alternating clay, gypsum and carbonate units and, in at least two drill sites, extend back >200 kyr. Most of the lithostratigraphic units are traceable throughout the basin along seismic reflections that serve as seismic stratigraphic boundaries and suggest that the lithostratigraphy can be used to infer regional palaeoenvironmental changes. A revised seismic stratigraphy was established on the basis of integrated lithological and seismic reflection data from the basin. From ca 200 to ca 85 ka, sediments are dominated by carbonate-clay silt, often interbedded with sandy turbidites, indicating a sediment regime dominated by detrital sedimentation in a relatively humid climate. At ca 85 ka, an exposure horizon consisting of gravels, coarse sand and terrestrial gastropods marks a lake lowstand or partial basin desiccation, indicating dry climate conditions. From ca 85 to ca 48 ka, transgressive carbonate-clay sediments, overlain by deep-water clays, suggest a lake level rise and subsequent stabilization at high stage. From ca 48 ka to present, the lithology is characterized by alternating clay and gypsum units. Gypsum deposition correlates with Heinrich Events (i.e. dry climate), whereas clay units coincide with more humid interstadials
APC loss in breast cancer leads to doxorubicin resistance via STAT3 activation
Resistance to chemotherapy is one of the leading causes of death from breast cancer. We recently established that loss of Adenomatous Polyposis Coli (APC) in the Mouse Mammary Tumor Virus – Polyoma middle T (MMTV-PyMT) transgenic mouse model results in resistance to cisplatin or doxorubicin-induced apoptosis. Herein, we aim to establish the mechanism that is responsible for APC-mediated chemotherapeutic resistance. Our data demonstrate that MMTV-PyMT;ApcMin/+ cells have increased signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3) activation. STAT3 can be constitutively activated in breast cancer, maintains the tumor initiating cell (TIC) population, and upregulates multidrug resistance protein 1 (MDR1). The activation of STAT3 in the MMTV-PyMT;ApcMin/+ model is independent of interleukin 6 (IL-6); however, enhanced EGFR expression in the MMTV-PyMT;ApcMin/+ cells may be responsible for the increased STAT3 activation. Inhibiting STAT3 with a small molecule inhibitor A69 in combination with doxorubicin, but not cisplatin, restores drug sensitivity. A69 also decreases doxorubicin enhanced MDR1 gene expression and the TIC population enhanced by loss of APC. In summary, these results have revealed the molecular mechanisms of APC loss in breast cancer that can guide future treatment plans to counteract chemotherapeutic resistance
