    A comprehensive review and classification of unit operations with assessment of outputs quality in lithium-ion battery recycling

    Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are the core component of the electrification transition, being used in portable electronics, electric vehicles, and stationary energy storage. The exponential growth of LIB use generates a large flow of spent batteries which must be recycled. This paper provides a comprehensive review of industrial realities of LIB recycling companies in Europe, North America, and Asia. An in-depth description of representative pyrometallurgy-based and hydrometallurgy-based processes is reported, providing classification of unit operations, their industrial readiness, and quality of output materials. The analysis shows that the pyrometallurgical route can treat different LIB chemistries without pre-sorting, but Li is not recovered unless the slag is refined. Hydrometallurgy-based processes are more chemistry-specific and in, although being affected by losses of electrode active materials during the mechanical pre-treatments for black mass separation. Efforts are required to promote in Europe the industrial capacity and readiness of hydrometallurgical processes by facilitating sorting and mechanical separations. There is also the need for harmonization of criteria for outputs definitions and rules for calculating recycling efficiency indicators. This represents an opportunity for modeling to support quantitative techno-economic and environmental assessments of the entire LIB recycling chain

    Recycling of Lithium-Ion Batteries: Overview of Existing Processes, Analysis and Performance

    Lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) have become a widespread technology for electrochemical energy storage in the current era of digitalization and transport electrification, being used as electric stationary storage as well as for powering electric vehicles, e-bikes and portable electronic devices such as smartphones and laptops. However, LIBs contain valuable materials, such as cobalt, nickel, lithium and graphite, whose supply has become critical to meet the increasing demand of batteries. Therefore, proper recycling processes are required in order to recover these materials from spent batteries and re-use them to produce new batteries in a sustainable cycle. This contribution provides an extensive survey of the main recycling routes available today, focusing specifically on pyrometallurgical and hydrometallurgical processes based in Europe, North America and Asia. Attention is also devoted to the recycling behaviour of individuals and companies and to the possible ways to increase their recycling rate. The comparison of different processes allows for the ranking of best practices as well as the drawbacks of different process units, with identification of which materials can be recovered, their recovery rate, and an assessment of the overall recycling efficiency of the process for different battery sizes (small and large, for portable electronics and electric vehicles, respectively). The analysis reveals that pyrometallurgical processes can flexibly treat different LIB chemistries but, since the electrolyte and graphite are burnt in the process, the global recycling efficiency cannot compete with hydrometallurgical processes, especially for small format batteries. Nevertheless, hydrometallurgical processes typically require preliminary mechanical separation treatments to separate the black mass, which contains valuable electrodic materials, as well as complex precipitation steps, which eventually reduce the material recovery rate and the applicability to diverse LIB chemistries. Finally, the study reports an analysis of the electrochemical performance of a battery made with recycled materials, showing that even if recycled cathodic materials had a lower gravimetric capacity and solid-state diffusivity, the performance of a recycled battery could be compensated by simple minor changes to the cell design which would ultimately decrease the specific energy density by a few percent compared to a LIB made with virgin materials

    The free license codes as decision support system (DSS) for the emergency planning to simulate radioactive releases in case of accidents in the new generation energy plants

    The radiological risk is related to a wide range of activities, beginning with the medical and military ones and including those connected to the industrial and research activities such as nuclear fusion. A valid tool to predict the consequences of the accidents and reduce the risk is represented by computing systems that allow modeling the evolution of a possible release of radioactive materials over time and space. In addition to proprietary codes there are free license codes, like Hot-Spot, that allow providing a set of tools to simulate diffusion in case of accidents involving radioactive materials and analyze the safety and security of the facilities in which the radioactive material is manipulated. The case studies scenario’s consists in two simulations accidents scenario the first to biomass plant and the second at nuclear fission plant. The simulation of the radioactive contamination have been conducted with the code HOT SPOT, a free license code. The results of the simulation and data discussion will be presented in this work by the authors

    Reconstruction of the nasal subunits after tumor resection

    Introduction: A majority of the nods present for reconstruction are secondary to tumor excision. The objective is to analyze the efficacy of the reconstructive technique used to cover the defect after tumor exeresis according to the affected nasal anatomical subunit. Method: Retrospective study of the medical records of 118 patients submitted to resection of the nasal tumors at the MĂĄrio Penna Institute in Belo Horizonte/ MG from August 2012 to March 2017. Results: Incidence was higher in women (56%) and whites (54.3%) average age of 71.3 years. A total of 125 tumors were resected, and 122 nose reconstructions were performed. Basal cell carcinoma (90.4%) was the most prevalent nonmelanoma skin tumor, the most frequent solid histological subtype (33.6%). The techniques for reconstruction of defects that affect only one nasal subunit were mostly using the bilobed flap (26.5%). In complex nose reconstructions, the bilobed myocutaneous flap (45.8%) with extension to a glabella region (encompassing the procerus, corrugator and nasal muscles) was the most used, mainly in defects in the lower third of the nose. About 78 patients had cancer follow-up of more than one year, and 82 total sin tumors were evaluated. Seven (8.5%) Tumors retreated even after complete resection, and, among the six patients with compromised margins, only one (1.2%) relapsed. Conclusion: The reconstructive techniques used were effective for treating nasal skin cancer and coverage of defects after resection, with low rates of complication and recurrence

    COVID-19 in the tonsillectomised population

    Objective: Interactions between SARS-CoV-2 and pharyngeal associated lymphoid tissue are thought to influence the manifestations of COVID-19. We aimed to determine whether a previous history of tonsillectomy, as a surrogate indicator of a dysfunctional pharyngeal associated lymphoid tissue, could predict the presentation and course of COVID-19. Methods: Multicentric cross-sectional observational study involving seven hospitals in Northern and Central Italy. Data on the clinical course and signs and symptoms of the infection were collected from 779 adults who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, and analysed in relation to previous tonsillectomy, together with demographic and anamnestic data. Results: Patients with previous tonsillectomy showed a greater risk of fever, temperature higher than 39°C, chills and malaise. No significant differences in hospital admissions were found. Conclusions: A previous history of tonsillectomy, as a surrogate indicator of immunological dysfunction of the pharyngeal associated lymphoid tissue, could predict a more intense systemic manifestation of COVID-19. These results could provide a simple clinical marker to discriminate suspected carriers and to delineate more precise prognostic models

    How future surgery will benefit from SARS-COV-2-related measures: a SPIGC survey conveying the perspective of Italian surgeons

    COVID-19 negatively affected surgical activity, but the potential benefits resulting from adopted measures remain unclear. The aim of this study was to evaluate the change in surgical activity and potential benefit from COVID-19 measures in perspective of Italian surgeons on behalf of SPIGC. A nationwide online survey on surgical practice before, during, and after COVID-19 pandemic was conducted in March-April 2022 (NCT:05323851). Effects of COVID-19 hospital-related measures on surgical patients' management and personal professional development across surgical specialties were explored. Data on demographics, pre-operative/peri-operative/post-operative management, and professional development were collected. Outcomes were matched with the corresponding volume. Four hundred and seventy-three respondents were included in final analysis across 14 surgical specialties. Since SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, application of telematic consultations (4.1% vs. 21.6%; p < 0.0001) and diagnostic evaluations (16.4% vs. 42.2%; p < 0.0001) increased. Elective surgical activities significantly reduced and surgeons opted more frequently for conservative management with a possible indication for elective (26.3% vs. 35.7%; p < 0.0001) or urgent (20.4% vs. 38.5%; p < 0.0001) surgery. All new COVID-related measures are perceived to be maintained in the future. Surgeons' personal education online increased from 12.6% (pre-COVID) to 86.6% (post-COVID; p < 0.0001). Online educational activities are considered a beneficial effect from COVID pandemic (56.4%). COVID-19 had a great impact on surgical specialties, with significant reduction of operation volume. However, some forced changes turned out to be benefits. Isolation measures pushed the use of telemedicine and telemetric devices for outpatient practice and favored communication for educational purposes and surgeon-patient/family communication. From the Italian surgeons' perspective, COVID-related measures will continue to influence future surgical clinical practice

    Alignment of the CMS silicon tracker during commissioning with cosmic rays

The official published version of the Paper can be accessed from the link below - Copyright @ 2010 IOPThe CMS silicon tracker, consisting of 1440 silicon pixel and 15 148 silicon strip detector modules, has been aligned using more than three million cosmic ray charged particles, with additional information from optical surveys. The positions of the modules were determined with respect to cosmic ray trajectories to an average precision of 3–4 microns RMS in the barrel and 3–14 microns RMS in the endcap in the most sensitive coordinate. The results have been validated by several studies, including laser beam cross-checks, track fit self-consistency, track residuals in overlapping module regions, and track parameter resolution, and are compared with predictions obtained from simulation. Correlated systematic effects have been investigated.     Commissioning and performance of the CMS pixel tracker with cosmic ray muons

The detector was installed in summer 2008, commissioned with charge injections, and operated in the 3.8 T magnetic field during cosmic ray data taking. This paper reports on the first running experience and presents results on the pixel tracker performance, which are found to be in line with the design specifications of this detector.
