Towards a genome-wide transcriptogram: the Saccharomyces cerevisiae case
A genome modular classification that associates cellular processes to modules could lead to a method to quantify the differences in gene expression levels in different cellular stages or conditions: the transcriptogram, a powerful tool for assessing cell performance, would be at hand. Here we present a computational method to order genes on a line that clusters strongly interacting genes, defining functional modules associated with gene ontology terms. The starting point is a list of genes and a matrix specifying their interactions, available at large gene interaction databases. Considering the Saccharomyces cerevisiae genome we produced a succession of plots of gene transcription levels for a fermentation process. These plots discriminate the fermentation stage the cell is going through and may be regarded as the first versions of a transcriptogram. This method is useful for extracting information from cell stimuli/responses experiments, and may be applied with diagnostic purposes to different organisms
Ciclização do lapachol induzida por sais de tålio III
This work describes the cyclization of lapachol (1) induced by thallium triacetate (TTA) and thallium trinitrate (TTN) in several solvents using magnetic stirring and under microwave irradiation. alpha-Xyloidone (2) - dehydro-alpha-lapachone - was obtained as the main product in these reactions in 20 75% yield. However, rhinacanthin-A (4) was isolated as main product in a 40% yield, using TTA and acetic anhydride:water (1:1) as solvent, and dehydro-iso-alpha-lapachone (3) in 21% yield, using TTA and dichloromethane as solvent. The reaction time decreased drastically under microwave conditions, but the yields of these reactions were not the expected
Supersymmetry and Integrability in Planar Mechanical Systems
We present an N=2-supersymmetric mechanical system whose bosonic sector, with
two degrees of freedom, stems from the reduction of an SU(2) Yang-Mills theory
with the assumption of spatially homogeneous field configurations and a
particular ansatz imposed on the gauge potentials in the dimensional reduction
procedure. The Painleve test is adopted to discuss integrability and we focus
on the role of supersymmetry and parity invariance in two space dimensions for
the attainment of integrable or chaotic models. Our conclusion is that the
relationships among the parameters imposed by supersymmetry seem to drastically
reduce the number of possibilities for integrable interaction potentials of the
mechanical system under consideration.Comment: 20 pages, 3 figure
Evaluation of hypoglycemic potential and pre-clinical toxicology of Morus nigra L. (Moraceae)
The hypoglycemic potential of crude ethanolic extract of leaves (CEE-Mn) of the Morus nigra
L. (Moraceae) was evaluated in normoglycemic rats. CEE-Mn (200 and 400 mg/kg) and metformin (500
mg/kg) were tested on the glucose tolerance oral test. The acute toxicity of CEE-Mn was performed 2.0
g/kg intraperitoneally and 5.0 g/kg orally in Swiss mice. Blood was removed after seven days for laboratory
analysis of hematological and biochemical parameters. In the glucose tolerance oral test, only metformin
was able to reduce the glucose-induced hyperglycemia. Regarding acute toxicity no mortality and
no toxicity signs were observed, indicating low toxicity of the extract. In the evaluation of hematological
and biochemical parameters no alteration was observed. In conclusion, the CEE-Mn can be considered of
low toxicity but did not produce the expected hypoglycemic effect in the model used.Colegio de Farmacéuticos de la Provincia de Buenos Aire
Cognitive impairment induced by delta9-tetrahydrocannabinol occurs through heteromers between cannabinoid CB1 and serotonin 5-HT2A receptors
Delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive compound of marijuana, induces numerous undesirable effects, including memory impairments, anxiety, and dependence. Conversely, THC also has potentially therapeutic effects, including analgesia, muscle relaxation, and neuroprotection. However, the mechanisms that dissociate these responses are still not known. Using mice lacking the serotonin receptor 5-HT2A, we revealed that the analgesic and amnesic effects of THC are independent of each other: while amnesia induced by THC disappears in the mutant mice, THC can still promote analgesia in these animals. In subsequent molecular studies, we showed that in specific brain regions involved in memory formation, the receptors for THC and the 5-HT2A receptors work together by physically interacting with each other. Experimentally interfering with this interaction prevented the memory deficits induced by THC, but not its analgesic properties. Our results highlight a novel mechanism by which the beneficial analgesic properties of THC can be dissociated from its cognitive side effects
Habitat determinants of goldenâheaded lion tamarin (Leontopithecus chrysomelas) occupancy of cacao agroforests: Gloomy conservation prospects for management intensification
Organismal distributions in humanâmodified landscapes largely depend on the capacity of any given species to adapt to changes in habitat structure and quality. The goldenâheaded lion tamarin (GHLT; Leontopithecus chrysomelas) is an Endangered primate from the Brazilian Atlantic Forest whose remaining populations occupy heterogeneous landscapes consisting primarily of shade cacao (Theobroma cacao) agroforestry, locally known as cabrucas. This cash crop can coexist with high densities of native tree species and holds a significant proportion of the native fauna, but its widely extolled wildlifeâfriendly status is increasingly threatened by management intensification. Although this potentially threatens to reduce the distribution of GHLTs, the main determinants of tamarin's occupancy of cabrucas remain unknown, thereby limiting our ability to design and implement appropriate conservation practices. We surveyed 16 cabruca patches in southern Bahia, Brazil, and used occupancy modeling to identify the best predictors of GHLT patch occupancy. Key explanatory variables included vegetation structure, critical resources, landscape context, human disturbance, and predation pressure. We found a negative relationship between GHLT occupancy and the prevalence of jackfruit trees (Artocarpus heterophylus), which is likely associated with the low representation of other key food species for GHLTs. Conversely, cabrucas retaining largeâdiameter canopy trees have a higher probability of GHLT occupancy, likely because these trees provide preferred sleeping sites. Thus, key large tree resources (food and shelter) are currently the main drivers of GHLT occupancy within cabruca agroecosystems. Since both factors can be directly affected by crop management practices, intensification of cabrucas may induce significant habitat impacts on GHLT populations over much of their remaining rangeâwide distribution
