Search for the bcb_c meson in hadronic Z decays

    Get PDF
A search for the Bc meson decaying into the channels J/psi pi+ and J/psi l nu (l = e or mu) is performed in a sample of 3.9 million hadronic Z decays collected by the ALEPH detector. This search results in the observation of 0 and 2 candidates in each of these channels, respectively, while 0.44 and 0.81 background events are expected. The following 90\% confidence level upper limits are derived: Br(Z->Bc X)/Br(Z->q q )*Br(Bc->J/psi pi+) 3.6 10^-5 Br(Z->Bc X)/Br(Z->q q )*Br(Bc->J/psi l nu) 5.2 10^-5 An additional Bc->J/psi(e+e-) mu nu candidate with very low background probability, found in an independent analysis, is also described in detail

Study of muon-pair production at centre-of-mass energies from 20 to 136 GeV with the Aleph detector

    No full text
The total cross section and the forward-backward asymmetry for the process e+eμ+μ(nγ)e^+ e^- \rightarrow \mu^+ \mu^- (n \gamma) are measured in the energy range 20-136 GeV by reconstructing the effective centre-of-mass energy after initial state radiation. The analysis is based on the data recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP between 1990 and 1995, corresponding to a total integrated luminosity of 143.5 pb1\mathrm{pb}^{-1}. Two different approaches are used: in the first one an exclusive selection of events with hard initial state radiation in the energy range 20-88 GeV is directly compared with the Standard Model predictions showing good agreement. In the second one, all events are used to obtain a precise measurement of the energy dependence of σ0\sigma^0 and AFB0A_{\mathrm{FB}}^0 from a model independent fit, enabling constraints to be placed on models with extra Z bosons

    Dalitz plot analysis ofB0→D¯0π+π−decays

The resonant substructures of B0D0π+πB^0 \to \overline{D}^0 \pi^+\pi^- decays are studied with the Dalitz plot technique. In this study a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb1^{-1} of pppp collisions collected by the LHCb detector is used. The branching fraction of the B0D0π+πB^0 \to \overline{D}^0 \pi^+\pi^- decay in the region m(D0π±)>2.1m(\overline{D}^0\pi^{\pm})>2.1 GeV/c2/c^2 is measured to be (8.46±0.14±0.29±0.40)×104(8.46 \pm 0.14 \pm 0.29 \pm 0.40) \times 10^{-4}, where the first uncertainty is statistical, the second is systematic and the last arises from the normalisation channel B0D(2010)π+B^0 \to D^*(2010)^-\pi^+. The π+π\pi^+\pi^- S-wave components are modelled with the Isobar and K-matrix formalisms. Results of the Dalitz plot analyses using both models are presented. A resonant structure at m(D0π)2.8m(\overline{D}^0\pi^-) \approx 2.8 GeV/c2/c^{2} is confirmed and its spin-parity is determined for the first time as JP=3J^P = 3^-. The branching fraction, mass and width of this structure are determined together with those of the D0(2400)D^*_0(2400)^- and D2(2460)D^*_2(2460)^- resonances. The branching fractions of other B0D0h0B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 h^0 decay components with h0π+πh^0 \to \pi^+\pi^- are also reported. Many of these branching fraction measurements are the most precise to date. The first observation of the decays B0D0f0(500)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(500), B0D0f0(980)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(980), B0D0ρ(1450)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 \rho(1450), B0D3(2760)π+B^0 \to D_3^*(2760)^- \pi^+ and the first evidence of B0D0f0(2020)B^0 \to \overline{D}^0 f_0(2020) are presented.Comment: 64 pages, 17 figure

First Observation of a Baryonic B-s(0) Decay

We report the first observation of a baryonic B-s(0) decay, B-s(0). p (Lambda) over barK(-), using proton-proton collision data recorded by the LHCb experiment at center-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 3.0 fb(-1). The branching fraction is measured to be B(B-s(0) -> p (Lambda) over bar K-)+ B(B-s(0) -> p (Lambda) over bar K+) [5.46 +/- 0.61 +/- 0.57 +/- 0.50(B) +/- 0.32(f(s)/(d))] x 10(-6), where the first uncertainty is statistical and the second systematic, the third uncertainty accounts for the experimental uncertainty on the branching fraction of the B-0 -> p (Lambda) over bar pi(-) decay used for normalization, and the fourth uncertainty relates to the knowledge of the ratio of b-quark hadronization probabilities f(s)/f(d)

Transverse momentum correlations in hadronic Z decays

    No full text
Using data obtained with the ALEPH detector at the Z resonance, a measure based on transverse momentum is shown to exhibit a correlation between the two halves of a hadronic event which cannot be explained by energy-momentum conservation, flavour conservation, the imposition of an event axis or imperfect event reconstruction. Two possible explanations based on Monte Carlo models are examined: a) ARIADNE, with the correlation forming early in the parton shower and with the transition from partons to hadrons playing only a minor part; b) JETSET, with the correlation forming at the fragmentation stage. A correlation technique based on a jet cluster analysis is used to make a comparison of the models with the data. It is concluded that both non-perturbative and perturbative effects make important contributions to the observed correlation

    A Study of Single W Production in e+ee^{+}e^{-} Collisions at s\sqrt{s} = 161 - 183 GeV

    No full text
Single W production is studied in the data recorded with the ALEPH detector at LEP at centre-of-mass energies between 161 and 183 GeV. The cross section is measured to be sigma_W=0.41+-0.17 (stat) +-0.04 (syst) pb at 183 GeV, consistent with the Standard Model expectation. Limits on non-standard WWgamma couplings are deduced as -1.6 < kg < 1.5 (lg=0) and -1.6 < lg < 1.6 (kg=1) at 95% C.L. A search for effectively invisible decays of the W boson in W pair production is performed, leading to an upper limit on the branching ratio of 1.3% (\Gamma_inv= 27 MeV) at 95% C.L

Measurement of the branching fraction for d0Kπ+d^0 \rightarrow K^-\pi^+

    No full text
The branching fraction for D0 -> K- pi+ is measured with the statistics collected by ALEPH from 1991 to 1994. The method is based on the comparison between the rate for the reconstructed D*+ -> D0 pi+, D0 -> K- pi+ decay chain and the rate for inclusive soft pion production at low transverse momentum with respect to the nearest jet. The result found is B(D0 -> K- pi+) = (3.90 +- 0.09 +- 0.12)

Search for Supersymmetry with a dominant R-Parity violating LQDLQ\overline{D} Coupling in e+ee^+ e^- Collisions at centre-of-mass energies of 130 GeV to 172 GeV

    No full text
A search for pair-production of supersymmetric particles under the assumption that R-parity is violated via a dominant LQDbar coupling has been performed using the data collected by ALEPH at centre-of-mass energies of 130-172 GeV. The observed candidate events in the data are in agreement with the Standard Model expectation. This result is translated into lower limits on the masses of charginos, neutralinos, sleptons, sneutrinos and squarks. For instance, for m_0=500 GeV/c^2 and tan(beta)=sqrt(2) charginos with masses smaller than 81 GeV/c^2 and neutralinos with masses smaller than 29 GeV/c^2 are excluded at the 95% confidence level for any generation structure of the LQDbar coupling
