Algorithmic aversion in artificial intelligence co-leadership and the impact of metaphors and comparisons

The importance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) has been increasing at a fast pace. Besides transforming our lives, these technologies are crucial to improving business operations by conducting tasks faster, better and with lower costs, and by helping in the decision­making process that is an intellectually demanding task. However, despite the advantages AI can offer, people still disbelieve the ability of algorithms, often prefer to decide for themselves and refuse to rely on algorithms after seeing them err. This phenomenon is called algorithm aversion and goes against the best interest of companies that need to gain competitive advantage in a very competitive market. In this way, this dissertation intends to study the potential use of metaphors and comparisons as strategies to reduce algorithm aversion. For this to be done, an experimental study with three experimental groups was conducted. The effect of a language­based metaphor, a visual metaphor and an explicit comparison between human and artificial neurons was studied by relying on a specific type of AI called Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to see if people would prefer this technology that seems to function in a similar way to humans, over a general AI in a leadership position. The results of the study did not corroborate the hypothesis that the metaphors were going to reduce algorithm aversion, as the only difference found in the leadership acceptance was between the general AI group and the human one in which the new leader was a normal person.A importância da Inteligência Artificial (IA) tem aumentado a um ritmo rápido. Além de transformar as nossas vidas, estas tecnologias são cruciais para melhorar operações de empresas, realizando tarefas de modo mais rápido, melhor, com menos custos, e auxiliando a tomada de decisão que é uma tarefa intelectualmente exigente. No entanto, apesar das vantagens que a IA pode oferecer, as pessoas ainda não acreditam na capacidade dos algoritmos, muitas vezes preferem decidir por si mesmas e recusam­se a confiar nos algoritmos depois de os verem errar. Este fenómeno é chamado de aversão ao algoritmo e vai contra o melhor interesse das empresas que precisam de ganhar vantagem competitiva num mercado muito competitivo. Assim, esta dissertação pretende estudar o potencial uso de metáforas e comparações como estratégias para reduzir a aversão a algoritmos. Para isso, foi realizado um estudo experimental com três grupos experimentais. O efeito de uma metáfora linguística, uma metáfora visual e uma comparação explícita entre neurónios humanos e artificiais foi estudado através de um tipo específico de IA chamada Rede Neural Artificial (RNA) para ver se as pessoas prefeririam esta tecnologia que parece funcionar de modo semelhante aos humanos, em vez de uma IA geral numa posição de liderança. Os resultados do estudo não corroboraram a hipótese de que a metáfora incluída na RNA iria reduzir a aversão ao algoritmo, pois a única diferença encontrada na aceitação da liderança foi entre o grupo de IA geral e o humano em que o novo líder era uma pessoa normal

Herramienta para definir los tipos de liderazgo en la policía nacional de Colombia, según la teoría 3D de James Reddin

Esto se traduce en potencializar las capacidades del personal y transformarlas en desempeños exitosos, por ello es importante lograr identificar ese liderazgo en los funcionarios con mando de la institución (alineados con el Modelo de Gestión Humana), a través de un instrumento para medir el estilo de liderazgo de los funcionarios con mando en la Policía Nacional. De allí se tomaron los 4 cuadrantes de características de liderazgo efectivo, y el instrumento, permitirá identificar los rasgos de liderazgo del funcionario y posicionarlo en el cuadrante correspondiente. This translates into empowering staff and transforrning them into successful performance, so it is important to be able to identify that leadership in the institution's officers (aligned with the Human Management Model), through an instrument to measure the style of leadership of the officers with command in the National Police. For the elaboration of the instrument was used the theory 3D developed by the professor William James Reddin. This theory exolains how a leader and organization achieve effectiveness. From there the 4 auadrants of effective leadership characteristics were taken, and the instrument will allow to identify the characteristics of leadership of the official and position it in the corresponding quadrant. Assessment of Landscape Changes caused by Highway Construction: Case Study of Ruta del Canal Pargua Highway in Chile

The constructed infrastructure that has made cities more livable to their human inhabitants not always has benefited the overall ecosystems, which has leading to some fragile land covers being the most affected (i.e., grasslands, wetlands, etc.). In this article, it is analyzed the relationship between the natural landscape and the highway “Ruta del Canal Pargua” in Puerto Montt, Chile. A comparison was performed/implemented based on a Land Use Land Cover Change (LULCC) analysis from a year before the construction of the highway (2012) to the most updated available image (2021). Three field spots were selected to observe the wetland’s landscape visual qualities, landscape natural features, and road management (2022). The results showed that anthropic interventions have been continuing to transform the natural features of wetland’s landscape, especially the native roadside vegetation, and noise pollution. This change was promoted by the lack of management of the highway in its surroundings, and, by the intrusive LULCC. This paper also discusses the persistent lack of ecological management for highways in southern Chile and sparks the conversation about the necessity to include an ecological perspective in road infrastructure design in Chile that could be replicated in Latin America

O artigo problematiza as diferentes dimensões presentes no processo de negociação de dívidas e que atuam na reconfiguração subjetiva dos sujeitos endividados. Por meio do arcabouço teórico que inclui drama social (Turner) e ritual (Peirano), além da abordagem etnográfica realizada junto à Central de Mediação – uma iniciativa do Tribunal de Justiça do Rio Grande do Sul, Conselho Nacional de Justiça (CNJ) e de outras instituições públicas – foi possível perceber que as dívidas negociadas, bem como seus significados, tensionam critérios morais, sociais e econômicos. Abordagem nutricional para praticantes de taekwondo : manual de orientações

O taekwondo é um esporte de foco competitivo, além de defesa pessoal, que está entre as modalidades oficiais dos Jogos Olímpicos. Neste sentido, a nutrição adequada é essencial para a saúde de desportistas e atletas submetidos a treinos constantes e que estão em busca de aumentar seu condicionamento físico. A promoção da educação e autocuidado alimentar são pilares importantes para a saúde e o desempenho físico neste esporte. Assim, o objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar um manual de orientações nutricionais, destinado ao praticante de taekwondo, de acordo com as recomendações científicas que amparam a nutrição neste esporte. A partir da busca artigos, trabalhos acadêmicos, livros eletrônicos, sites oficiais, legislações e guias descritivos, foram elaboradas orientações nutricionais gerais e individuais, relacionadas ao esporte, bem como explanadas a origem, história e os valores do taekwondo. Dessa forma, espera-se zelar pela saúde do praticante deste esporte, dentro e fora dele, como um todo.Taekwondo is a sport with a competitive focus, in addition to self-defense, which is among the official modalities of the Olympic Games. In this sense, adequate nutrition is essential for the health of athletes and athletes who undergo constant training and who are looking to increase their physical conditioning. The promotion of food education and self-care are important pillars for health and physical performance in this sport. Thus, the objective of this work is to present a manual of nutritional guidelines, intended for taekwondo practitioners, according to the scientific recommendations that support nutrition in this sport. From the search for articles, academic works, electronic books, official websites, legislation and descriptive guides, general and individual nutritional guidelines related to the sport were prepared, as well as the origin, history and values of taekwondo. In this way, it is expected to ensure the health of the practitioner of this sport, inside and outside it, as a whole

El idiolecto en Bridget Jones´s Diary: Identificación de sus rasgos principales y análisis de su traducción al español

Este trabajo supone una breve incursión en la traducción de una variedad lingüística poco estudiada, el idiolecto. En concreto, se identifican los principales rasgos lingüísticos que caracterizan el idiolecto de la protagonista de la novela Bridget Jones´s Diary y se analiza su traducción al español, con el objeto de determinar las técnicas de que se sirve el traductor para superar las dificultades que le plantean dichos rasgos. Al mismo tiempo, se ofrecen alternativas de traducción para acercar el idiolecto de la novela al español actual. Comenzamos por contextualizar la novela en la literatura femenina, el género chick lit y el formato diario. Analizamos cómo Helen Fielding ha conseguido reflejar de manera natural el habla de la protagonista mediante distintos recursos lingüísticos. Finalmente, examinamos la traducción de esos elementos al español, para comprobar si ha conseguido alcanzar un nivel de naturalidad parecido. Si no es así, hacemos algunas propuestas de traducción alternativas.Grado en Traducción e Interpretació
