Inter-hemispheric EEG coherence analysis in Parkinson's disease : Assessing brain activity during emotion processing
Parkinsonâs disease (PD) is not only characterized by its prominent motor symptoms but also associated with disturbances in cognitive and emotional functioning. The objective of the present study was to investigate the influence of emotion processing on inter-hemispheric electroencephalography (EEG) coherence in PD. Multimodal emotional stimuli (happiness, sadness, fear, anger, surprise, and disgust) were presented to 20 PD patients and 30 age-, education level-, and gender-matched healthy controls (HC) while EEG was recorded. Inter-hemispheric coherence was computed from seven homologous EEG electrode pairs (AF3âAF4, F7âF8, F3âF4, FC5âFC6, T7âT8, P7âP8, and O1âO2) for delta, theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands. In addition, subjective ratings were obtained for a representative of emotional stimuli. Interhemispherically, PD patients showed significantly lower coherence in theta, alpha, beta, and gamma frequency bands than HC during emotion processing. No significant changes were found in the delta frequency band coherence. We also found that PD patients were more impaired in recognizing negative emotions (sadness, fear, anger, and disgust) than relatively positive emotions (happiness and surprise). Behaviorally, PD patients did not show impairment in emotion recognition as measured by subjective ratings. These findings suggest that PD patients may have an impairment of inter-hemispheric functional connectivity (i.e., a decline in cortical connectivity) during emotion processing. This study may increase the awareness of EEG emotional response studies in clinical practice to uncover potential neurophysiologic abnormalities

Interleukin 7 from Maternal Milk Crosses the Intestinal Barrier and Modulates T- Cell Development in Offspring
Background
Breastfeeding protects against illnesses and death in hazardous environments, an
effect partly mediated by improved immune function. One hypothesis suggests that
factors within milk supplement the inadequate immune response of the offspring,
but this has not been able to account for a series of observations showing that
factors within maternally derived milk may supplement the development of the
immune system through a direct effect on the primary lymphoid organs. In a
previous human study we reported evidence suggesting a link between IL-7 in
breast milk and the thymic output of infants. Here we report evidence in mice of
direct action of maternally-derived IL-7 on T cell development in the offspring.
Methods and Findings
 We have used recombinant IL-7 labelled with a fluorescent dye to trace the
movement in live mice of IL-7 from the stomach across the gut and into the
lymphoid tissues. To validate the functional ability of maternally derived IL-
7 we cross fostered IL-7 knock-out mice onto normal wild type mothers. Subsets
of thymocytes and populations of peripheral T cells were significantly higher
than those found in knock-out mice receiving milk from IL-7 knock-out mothers.
Conclusions/Significance Our study provides direct evidence that interleukin 7,
a factor which is critical in the development of T lymphocytes, when maternally
derived can transfer across the intestine of the offspring, increase T cell
production in the thymus and support the survival of T cells in the peripheral
secondary lymphoid tissue
Nut production in Bertholletia excelsa across a logged forest mosaic: implications for multiple forest use
Although many examples of multiple-use forest management may be found in tropical smallholder systems, few studies provide empirical support for the integration of selective timber harvesting with non-timber forest product (NTFP) extraction. Brazil nut (Bertholletia excelsa, Lecythidaceae) is one of the worldâs most economically-important NTFP species extracted almost entirely from natural forests across the Amazon Basin. An obligate out-crosser, Brazil nut flowers are pollinated by large-bodied bees, a process resulting in a hard round fruit that takes up to 14 months to mature. As many smallholders turn to the financial security provided by timber, Brazil nut fruits are increasingly being harvested in logged forests. We tested the influence of tree and stand-level covariates (distance to nearest cut stump and local logging intensity) on total nut production at the individual tree level in five recently logged Brazil nut concessions covering about 4000 ha of forest in Madre de Dios, Peru. Our field team accompanied Brazil nut harvesters during the traditional harvest period (January-April 2012 and January-April 2013) in order to collect data on fruit production. Three hundred and ninety-nine (approximately 80%) of the 499 trees included in this study were at least 100 m from the nearest cut stump, suggesting that concessionaires avoid logging near adult Brazil nut trees. Yet even for those trees on the edge of logging gaps, distance to nearest cut stump and local logging intensity did not have a statistically significant influence on Brazil nut production at the applied logging intensities (typically 1â2 timber trees removed per ha). In one concession where at least 4 trees ha-1 were removed, however, the logging intensity covariate resulted in a marginally significant (0.09) P value, highlighting a potential risk for a drop in nut production at higher intensities. While we do not suggest that logging activities should be completely avoided in Brazil nut rich forests, when a buffer zone cannot be observed, low logging intensities should be implemented. The sustainability of this integrated management system will ultimately depend on a complex series of socioeconomic and ecological interactions. Yet we submit that our study provides an important initial step in understanding the compatibility of timber harvesting with a high value NTFP, potentially allowing for diversification of forest use strategies in Amazonian PerĂč
Observation of an Exotic Baryon in Exclusive Photoproduction from the Deuteron
In an exclusive measurement of the reaction , a
narrow peak that can be attributed to an exotic baryon with strangeness
is seen in the invariant mass spectrum. The peak is at
GeV/c with a measured width of 0.021 GeV/c FWHM, which is largely
determined by experimental mass resolution. The statistical significance of the
peak is . The mass and width of the observed peak are
consistent with recent reports of a narrow baryon by other experimental

Complete measurement of three-body photodisintegration of 3He for photon energies between 0.35 and 1.55 GeV
The three-body photodisintegration of 3He has been measured with the CLAS
detector at Jefferson Lab, using tagged photons of energies between 0.35 GeV
and 1.55 GeV. The large acceptance of the spectrometer allowed us for the first
time to cover a wide momentum and angular range for the two outgoing protons.
Three kinematic regions dominated by either two- or three-body contributions
have been distinguished and analyzed. The measured cross sections have been
compared with results of a theoretical model, which, in certain kinematic

A Precise Measurement of the Neutron Magnetic Form Factor GMn in the Few-GeV2 Region
The neutron elastic magnetic form factor GMn has been extracted from
quasielastic electron scattering data on deuterium with the CEBAF Large
Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) at Jefferson Lab. The kinematic coverage of the
measurement is continuous from Q2=1 GeV2 to 4.8 GeV2. High precision was
achieved by employing a ratio technique in which many uncertainties cancel, and
by a simultaneous in-situ calibration of the neutron detection efficiency, the
largest correction to the data. Neutrons were detected using the CLAS
electromagnetic calorimeters and the time-of-flight scintillators. Data were
taken at two different electron beam energies, allowing up to four
semi-independent measurements of GMn to be made at each value of Q2. The dipole
parameterization is found to provide a good description of the data over the

Measurement of Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering with a Polarized Proton Target
The longitudinal target-spin asymmetry A_UL for the exclusive
electroproduction of high energy photons was measured for the first time in
p(e,e'p\gamma). The data have been accumulated at Jefferson Lab with the CLAS
spectrometer using 5.7 GeV electrons and a longitudinally polarized NH_3
target. A significant azimuthal angular dependence was observed, resulting from
the interference of the Deeply Virtual Compton Scattering and Bethe-Heitler
processes. The amplitude of the sin(phi) moment is 0.252 +/- 0.042(stat) +/-
0.020(sys). Theoretical calculations are in good agreement with the magnitude
and the kinematic dependence of the target-spin asymmetry, which is sensitive
to the generalized parton distributions H and H-tilde.Comment: Modified text slightly, added reference
Measurement of the Polarized Structure Function for in the Resonance Region
The polarized longitudinal-transverse structure function
has been measured in the resonance region at and 0.65
GeV. Data for the reaction were taken at Jefferson Lab
with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer (CLAS) using longitudinally
polarized electrons at an energy of 1.515 GeV. For the first time a complete
angular distribution was measured, permitting the separation of different
non-resonant amplitudes using a partial wave analysis. Comparison with previous
beam asymmetry measurements at MAMI indicate a deviation from the predicted
dependence of using recent phenomenological

Measurement of the Deuteron Structure Function F2 in the Resonance Region and Evaluation of Its Moments
Inclusive electron scattering off the deuteron has been measured to extract
the deuteron structure function F2 with the CEBAF Large Acceptance Spectrometer
(CLAS) at the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility. The measurement
covers the entire resonance region from the quasi-elastic peak up to the
invariant mass of the final-state hadronic system W~2.7 GeV with four-momentum
transfers Q2 from 0.4 to 6 (GeV/c)^2. These data are complementary to previous
measurements of the proton structure function F2 and cover a similar
two-dimensional region of Q2 and Bjorken variable x. Determination of the
deuteron F2 over a large x interval including the quasi-elastic peak as a
function of Q2, together with the other world data, permit a direct evaluation
of the structure function moments for the first time. By fitting the Q2
evolution of these moments with an OPE-based twist expansion we have obtained a
separation of the leading twist and higher twist terms. The observed Q2
behaviour of the higher twist contribution suggests a partial cancellation of
different higher twists entering into the expansion with opposite signs. This
cancellation, found also in the proton moments, is a manifestation of the
"duality" phenomenon in the F2 structure function
