    Scour-Resilient Bio-Inspired Geomorphic Designs: the Male Japanese Puffer Fish Nest

    In 1995, divers noticed a strange circular pattern on the seabed off Japan. The geometric formations mysteriously appeared and dissolved, and no-one knew what made them. Finally, the creator of these remarkable formations was found: a new species of pufferfish from the genus Torquigener. The male puffer fish executes a design of mathematical perfection in the form of ornate circles. As he swims along the seabed, he laboriously flaps his fins and rearranges the sand, creating the geomorphic feature dubbed crop circle by the pioneers who first noticed them. The significance to understand the puffer fish design is magnified when we consider that the nest is able to maintain its morphological features for long periods even though it is built entirely of mobile particles in an area where the flow does not stop. As a relatively new discovery, the exact reasons behind why the pufferfish spends such a long time constructing and cultivating the nest it still a question that is shrouded in a substantial amount of mystery. Male puffer fish spend many days caring for the eggs, the only puffer fish genus to be overserved doing so; suggesting that Torquigener place an unusually large emphasis on ensuring the survival of their eggs. It is hypothesised that the nest is created as a mating display, as female puffer fish will visit the site, presumably assessing various characteristics of the nest. It is not known exactly what parameters the females judge the nest on; whether it be size, symmetric properties or decorative choice. However, due to some basic hydrodynamic experiments performed by Hiroshi Kawase, there is some evidence to suggest that there may be more to building the nest than solely attracting a mate. Several questions therefore arise regarding the nest. Is there an evolutionary reason that male puffer fish build these nests? Which characteristics of a nest make it attractive to female puffer fish? Are the eggs safer in a nest, perhaps from incoming currents? How exactly does fluid flow through nest, and can it be replicated and simulated? This project begins to tackle these questions through a numerical investigation (CFD) of the fluid flow through the nest in order to identify key fluid dynamic features, which may play a significant role in egg incubation and spawning using Star CCM+

    Utility of Quantitative 99mTc-MAA SPECT/CT for 90yttrium-Labelled Microsphere Treatment Planning: Calculating Vascularized Hepatic Volume and Dosimetric Approach

    Objectives. The aim of this study was to assess the effectiveness of SPECT/CT for volume measurements and to report a case illustrating the major impact of SPECT/CT in calculating the vascularized liver volume and dosimetry prior to injecting radiolabelled yttrium-90 microspheres (Therasphere). Materials and Methods. This was a phantom study, involving volume measurements carried out by two operators using SPECT and SPECT/CT images. The percentage of error for each method was calculated, and interobserver reproducibility was evaluated. A treatment using Therasphere was planned in a patient with three hepatic arteries, and the quantitative analysis of SPECT/CT for this patient is provided. Results. SPECT/CT volume measurements proved to be accurate (mean error <6% for volumes ≥16 cm3) and reproductive (interobserver agreement = 0.9). In the case report, 99mTc-MAA SPECT/CT identified a large liver volume, not previously identified with angiography, which was shown to be vascularized after selective MAA injection into an arterial branch, resulting in a large modification in the activity of Therasphere used. Conclusions. MAA SPECT/CT is accurate for vascularized liver volume measurements, providing a valuable contribution to the therapeutic planning of patients with complex hepatic vascularization

    Towards an understanding of quality and inclusivity in human‐environment experiences

    AbstractAs calls grow for relational approaches to nature and wellbeing research that consider reciprocity in human‐environment interactions, the concept of affordances is gaining importance as a useful way of thinking about nature experiences. Affordances provide a framework to enable individualised conceptions of nature by focusing on what is functionally meaningful to people. However, affordance thinking is currently limited in its ability to help us understand how peoples' background, culture and circumstances shape interactions with nature ‐ a critical issue with respect to inclusivity and the under‐representation of some sections of society. Bourdieu's theory of practice is a well‐established set of ‘thinking tools’ which potentially help addresses these influences. It examines how our social environment may pattern our practices, attitudes, and perceptions. In this paper, we review the various applications of affordances before providing an overview of how Bourdieu's concepts of habitus, capital and field can complement, and be integrated with, affordance thinking for novel applications to greenspace research. Bridging these areas of thinking will facilitate development of a more intersectional and complete understanding of nature experiences, including the quality and inclusivity of green and natural spaces.</jats:p

    Engineering the optical response of the titanium-MIL-125 metal-organic framework through ligand functionalization

    Herein we discuss band gap modification of MIL-125, a TiO2/1,4-benzenedicarboxylate (bdc) metal-organic framework (MOF). Through a combination of synthesis and computation, we elucidated the electronic structure of MIL-125 with aminated linkers. The band gap decrease observed when the monoaminated bdc-NH2 linker was used arises from donation of the N 2p electrons to the aromatic linking unit, resulting in a red-shifted band above the valence-band edge of MIL-125. We further explored in silico MIL-125 with the diaminated linker bdc(NH2)(2) and other functional groups (-OH, -CH3, -Cl) as alternative substitutions to control the optical response. The bdc-(NH2)2 linking unit was predicted to lower the band gap of MIL-125 to 1.28 eV, and this was confirmed through the targeted synthesis of the bdc-(NH2)(2)-based MIL,-125. This study illustrates the possibility of tuning the optical response of MOFs through rational functionalization of the linking unit, and the strength of combined synthetic/computational approaches for targeting functionalized hybrid materials

    Prime Focus Spectrograph (PFS) for the Subaru Telescope: Overview, recent progress, and future perspectives

    PFS (Prime Focus Spectrograph), a next generation facility instrument on the 8.2-meter Subaru Telescope, is a very wide-field, massively multiplexed, optical and near-infrared spectrograph. Exploiting the Subaru prime focus, 2394 reconfigurable fibers will be distributed over the 1.3 deg field of view. The spectrograph has been designed with 3 arms of blue, red, and near-infrared cameras to simultaneously observe spectra from 380nm to 1260nm in one exposure at a resolution of ~1.6-2.7A. An international collaboration is developing this instrument under the initiative of Kavli IPMU. The project is now going into the construction phase aiming at undertaking system integration in 2017-2018 and subsequently carrying out engineering operations in 2018-2019.     Heterogeneity of variance components for preweaning growth in Romane sheep due to the number of lambs reared

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>The pre-weaning growth rate of lambs, an important component of meat market production, is affected by maternal and direct genetic effects. The French genetic evaluation model takes into account the number of lambs suckled by applying a multiplicative factor (1 for a lamb reared as a single, 0.7 for twin-reared lambs) to the maternal genetic effect, in addition to including the birth*rearing type combination as a fixed effect, which acts on the mean. However, little evidence has been provided to justify the use of this multiplicative model. The two main objectives of the present study were to determine, by comparing models of analysis, 1) whether pre-weaning growth is the same trait in single- and twin-reared lambs and 2) whether the multiplicative coefficient represents a good approach for taking this possible difference into account.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Data on the pre-weaning growth rate, defined as the average daily gain from birth to 45 days of age on 29,612 Romane lambs born between 1987 and 2009 at the experimental farm of La Sapinière (INRA-France) were used to compare eight models that account for the number of lambs per dam reared in various ways. Models were compared using the Akaike information criteria.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The model that best fitted the data assumed that 1) direct (maternal) effects correspond to the same trait regardless of the number of lambs reared, 2) the permanent environmental effects and variances associated with the dam depend on the number of lambs reared and 3) the residual variance depends on the number of lambs reared. Even though this model fitted the data better than a model that included a multiplicative coefficient, little difference was found between EBV from the different models (the correlation between EBV varied from 0.979 to 0.999).</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>Based on experimental data, the current genetic evaluation model can be improved to better take into account the number of lambs reared. Thus, it would be of interest to evaluate this model on field data and update the genetic evaluation model based on the results obtained.</p

    Pan-Cancer Analysis of lncRNA Regulation Supports Their Targeting of Cancer Genes in Each Tumor Context

    Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are commonly dys-regulated in tumors, but only a handful are known toplay pathophysiological roles in cancer. We inferredlncRNAs that dysregulate cancer pathways, onco-genes, and tumor suppressors (cancer genes) bymodeling their effects on the activity of transcriptionfactors, RNA-binding proteins, and microRNAs in5,185 TCGA tumors and 1,019 ENCODE assays.Our predictions included hundreds of candidateonco- and tumor-suppressor lncRNAs (cancerlncRNAs) whose somatic alterations account for thedysregulation of dozens of cancer genes and path-ways in each of 14 tumor contexts. To demonstrateproof of concept, we showed that perturbations tar-geting OIP5-AS1 (an inferred tumor suppressor) andTUG1 and WT1-AS (inferred onco-lncRNAs) dysre-gulated cancer genes and altered proliferation ofbreast and gynecologic cancer cells. Our analysis in-dicates that, although most lncRNAs are dysregu-lated in a tumor-specific manner, some, includingOIP5-AS1, TUG1, NEAT1, MEG3, and TSIX, synergis-tically dysregulate cancer pathways in multiple tumorcontexts

    Pan-cancer Alterations of the MYC Oncogene and Its Proximal Network across the Cancer Genome Atlas

    Although theMYConcogene has been implicated incancer, a systematic assessment of alterations ofMYC, related transcription factors, and co-regulatoryproteins, forming the proximal MYC network (PMN),across human cancers is lacking. Using computa-tional approaches, we define genomic and proteo-mic features associated with MYC and the PMNacross the 33 cancers of The Cancer Genome Atlas.Pan-cancer, 28% of all samples had at least one ofthe MYC paralogs amplified. In contrast, the MYCantagonists MGA and MNT were the most frequentlymutated or deleted members, proposing a roleas tumor suppressors.MYCalterations were mutu-ally exclusive withPIK3CA,PTEN,APC,orBRAFalterations, suggesting that MYC is a distinct onco-genic driver. Expression analysis revealed MYC-associated pathways in tumor subtypes, such asimmune response and growth factor signaling; chro-matin, translation, and DNA replication/repair wereconserved pan-cancer. This analysis reveals insightsinto MYC biology and is a reference for biomarkersand therapeutics for cancers with alterations ofMYC or the PMN
