This is a work that speaks of the impossibtlity of belonging; to a place, to a home, to something stable. It speaks of the impossibility of being, of being able to belong in the space for long time and to form roots in it. My life has been based on carrying my objects from one side to another and release many others. to pack and then to unpack and wait for the next turn to pack once again. It is a circle that has ne ver been broken. The, objects I leave back do not define my past, but help me to rebuild my present. I do not belong to a single place. The roots i have tried to grow in every "home" I have passed by, I had to collect them to strength and take them with me. They do not try to tie me to the floor, they help me to load my memories and take them with me.Maestro (a) en Artes VisualesPregrad

Cavitation bubble measurement in tribological contacts using digital holographic microscopy

    Get PDF
The use of advanced measurement techniques such as the digital holography method described in this paper improves the understanding of the cavitation phenomenon in tribological contacts such as the sliding contact of the piston ring–cylinder liner conjunction. The paper describes the use of digital holography measurement technique to measure cavitation bubble formation and thickness. The position of observed lubricant film rupture preceding the cavitation region is compared with some commonly predicted boundary often used with Reynolds equation. The experimental results indicate that the Reynolds and Elrod boundary conditions are the most suitable for the investigated sliding contact conditions

Apical membrane antigen 1 is a microneme protein which plays an indispensable role during Apicomplexa parasite invasion. The detailed mechanism of AMA-1 molecular interaction with its receptor on bovine erythrocytes has not been completely defined in Babesia bovis. This study was focused on identifying the minimum B. bovis AMA-1-derived regions governing specific and high-affinity binding to its target cells. Different approaches were used for detecting ama-1 locus genetic variability and natural selection signatures. The binding properties of twelve highly conserved 20-residue-long peptides were evaluated using a sensitive and specific binding assay based on radio-iodination. B. bovis AMA-1 ectodomain structure was modelled and refined using molecular modelling software. NetMHCIIpan software was used for calculating B-and T-cell epitopes. The B. bovis ama-1 gene had regions under functional constraint, having the highest negative selective pressure intensity in the Domain I encoding region. Interestingly, B. bovis AMA-1-DI (100YMQKFDIPRNHGSGIYVDLG119 and120GYESVGSKSYRMPVGKCPVV139 ) and DII (302CPMHPVRDAIFGKWSGGSCV321 )-derived peptides had high specificity interaction with erythrocytes and bound to a chymotrypsin and neuraminidase-treatment sensitive receptor. DI-derived peptides appear to be exposed on the protein’s surface and contain predicted B-and T-cell epitopes. These findings provide data (for the first-time) concerning B. bovis AMA-1 functional subunits which are important for establishing receptor-ligand interactions which could be used in synthetic vaccine development

Abstract Background: Multiple factors such as design, type of material, elastic modulus, and relative deformation of the implants, affect the wear of the surfaces (implant-bone and implant-abutment) due to the time of use, leading to the appearance of peri-implant diseases. Purpose: In this work, biomechanical characteristics were evaluated in vitro: elastic modulus and limit, as well as relative deformation in 11 implant models, from 7 commercial houses: Zimmer®, Straumann®, Ankylos®, Tiologic®, BioHorizons®, Mis® and Imeti ®. Methods: The models were attached to a T-shaped epoxy resin support and an oblique load gradient was applied up to 100 Nw. Results: Through linear and non-parametric regression analysis (Mann-Whitney test), it was observed that the Zimmer®, Zimmer 3i®, and Mis C1® models had a higher elastic modulus (169, 144, and 144 Nw/mm, respectively), being lower for the Imeti® model (102 Nw/mm). A lower median was obtained in the Zimmer® model (0.10), as well as the lowest relative strain index range when compared to the other models, followed by BioHorizons Tissue level® (0.12), Mis C1® (0.12), and Mis Seven® (0.11). Conclusions: Punctual changes such as a higher elastic modulus and lower relative deformation were found for both models from the commercial house Zimmer® and Mis C1®, contrary to those found in the Mis Seven® and Imeti® models, whose values for the latter, were lower in the elastic modulus, together with a higher elastic elongation, higher index, and range of relative strain.Especialista en PeriodonciaEspecializació

In graphic communication, persuasion is through the values of a brand concept, which involves the combination of a sharp image with the stimulation of human emotions. The images themselves generate an emotion. The model bioinformational International Affective Picture System (IAPS), analyzed, normalized and standardized emotional over 1200 images on a psychological context. However, in marketing these images have not been studied, which are the most suitable images to be associated with the product and so choose suitable for the product is perceived by the target market. This research seeks to measure the memory of the brand exposure to affective pictures as a slide show presented in the IAPS (International Affective Picture System), through an experimental study based on the model of Peter Lang bioinformational where 60 images were analyzed by the International Affective Picture System (IAPs) highly emotional load: 20 positive and 20 negative images, additionally, 20 images were analyzed emotional uncharged or neutral, to each of which are inserted and positioned a recognized brand on the market, taken from the list of BrandZ top 100 of Millward Brown, 2010 to be evaluated by 300 students of the 5th semester BA from the School of Accounting and Administration of the National University of Mexico, using a sheet assessment to write down the ten images that recalled and what was the brand image showing. With the result we obtained data that may be useful in the field of marketing for the development of graphic communication strategies that will allow entrepreneurs have a greater impact on attention, recall and purchase in the design of visual communication campaigns

Storylines for practice: a visual storytelling approach to strengthen the science‑practice interface

A growing number of scientifc publications is available to promote sustainable river management. However, these publications target researchers rather than water management professionals who are responsible for the implementation of management practices. To bridge this science-to-practice gap, we conceptualize and propose a series of steps to prepare efective storylines targeted at a practitioner audience. We developed this approach within a research program that supports integrated and collaborative river management. We prepared three storylines, each based on one scientifc publication. The storylines combined text and interactive visuals using the ESRI StoryMaps tool to make them available online. Via focus groups with 44 participants from research and practice, we evaluated the perceived usefulness of and engagement with the content and design. We collected feedback from participants using a survey as well as via audio and screen recordings. Our fndings show that we should narrow down the audience of the storylines by tailoring them to the needs of project managers rather than specialized advisors. Therefore, the content should ofer more than a visual summary of the research by showing examples of the management application. A more engaging sequence with a clear protagonist is further required to better relate to the problem and the potential application. Although visuals and interactive elements were considered attractive, a multi-disciplinary editorial team is necessary to better complement the visuals’ design to the text. The level of detail of participants’ feedback shows that involving project managers to co-create storylines can be an important step for improvement.Peer reviewe

Biomarkers; Mortality; SepsisBiomarcadores; Mortalidad; SepsisBiomarcadors; Mortalitat; SèpsiaBackground Numerous biomarkers have been proposed for diagnosis, therapeutic, and prognosis in sepsis. Previous evaluations of the value of biomarkers for predicting mortality due to this life-threatening condition fail to address the complexity of this condition and the risk of bias associated with prognostic studies. We evaluate the predictive performance of four of these biomarkers in the prognosis of mortality through a methodologically sound evaluation. Methods We conducted a systematic review a systematic review and meta-analysis to determine, in critically ill adults with sepsis, whether procalcitonin (PCT), C-reactive protein (CRP), interleukin-6 (IL-6), and presepsin (sCD14) are independent prognostic factors for mortality. We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials up to March 2023. Only Phase-2 confirmatory prognostic factor studies among critically ill septic adults were included. Random effects meta-analyses pooled the prognostic association estimates. Results We included 60 studies (15,681 patients) with 99 biomarker assessments. Quality of the statistical analysis and reporting domains using the QUIPS tool showed high risk of bias in > 60% assessments. The biomarker measurement as a continuous variable in models adjusted by key covariates (age and severity score) for predicting mortality at 28–30 days showed a null or near to null association for basal PCT (pooled OR = 0.99, 95% CI = 0.99–1.003), CRP (OR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.87 to 1.17), and IL-6 (OR = 1.02, 95% CI = 1.01–1.03) and sCD14 (pooled HR = 1.003, 95% CI = 1.000 to 1.006). Additional meta-analyses accounting for other prognostic covariates had similarly null findings. Conclusion Baseline, isolated measurement of PCT, CRP, IL-6, and sCD14 has not been shown to help predict mortality in critically ill patients with sepsis. The role of these biomarkers should be evaluated in new studies where the patient selection would be standardized and the measurement of biomarker results.Instituto de Salud Carlos III, Spain and European Union (“Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional, Una manera de hacer Europa”), grant number [PI 19/0048]
