    Reference crop evapotranspiration database in Spain (1961-2014)

    Obtaining climate grids describing distinct variables is important for developing better climate studies. These grids are also useful products for other researchers and end users. The atmospheric evaporative demand (AED) may be measured in terms of the reference evapotranspiration (ETo), a key variable for understanding water and energy terrestrial balances and an important variable in climatology, hydrology and agronomy. Despite its importance, the calculation of ETo is not commonly undertaken, mainly because datasets consisting of a high number of climate variables are required and some of the required variables are not commonly available. To address this problem, a strategy based on the spatial interpolation of climate variables prior to the calculation of ETo using FAO-56 Penman-Monteith equation was followed to obtain an ETo database for continental Spain and the Balearic Islands, covering the 1961-2014 period at a spatial resolution of 1.1 km and at a weekly temporal resolution. In this database, values for the radiative and aerodynamic components as well as the estimated uncertainty related to ETo were also provided. This database is available for download in the Network Common Data Form (netCDF) at https://doi.org/10.20350/digitalCSIC/8615 (Tomas-Burguera et al., 2019). A map visualization tool (http://speto.csic.es, last access: 10 December 2019) is available to help users download the data corresponding to one specific point in comma-separated values (csv) format. A relevant number of research areas could take advantage of this database. For example, (i) studies of the Budyko curve, which relates rainfall data to the evapotranspiration and AED at the watershed scale, (ii) calculations of drought indices using AED data, such as the Standardized Precipitation-Evapotranspiration Index (SPEI) or Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI), (iii) agroclimatic studies related to irrigation requirements, (iv) validation of climate models'' water and energy balance, and (v) studies of the impacts of climate change in terms of the AED

    Differential loss of effector genes in three recently expanded pandemic clonal lineages of the rice blast fungus

    BACKGROUND: Understanding the mechanisms and timescales of plant pathogen outbreaks requires a detailed genome-scale analysis of their population history. The fungus Magnaporthe (Syn. Pyricularia) oryzae-the causal agent of blast disease of cereals- is among the most destructive plant pathogens to world agriculture and a major threat to the production of rice, wheat, and other cereals. Although M. oryzae is a multihost pathogen that infects more than 50 species of cereals and grasses, all rice-infecting isolates belong to a single genetically defined lineage. Here, we combined the two largest genomic datasets to reconstruct the genetic history of the rice-infecting lineage of M. oryzae based on 131 isolates from 21 countries. RESULTS: The global population of the rice blast fungus consists mainly of three well-defined genetic groups and a diverse set of individuals. Multiple population genetic tests revealed that the rice-infecting lineage of the blast fungus probably originated from a recombining diverse group in Southeast Asia followed by three independent clonal expansions that took place over the last ~ 200 years. Patterns of allele sharing identified a subpopulation from the recombining diverse group that introgressed with one of the clonal lineages before its global expansion. Remarkably, the four genetic lineages of the rice blast fungus vary in the number and patterns of presence and absence of candidate effector genes. These genes encode secreted proteins that modulate plant defense and allow pathogen colonization. In particular, clonal lineages carry a reduced repertoire of effector genes compared with the diverse group, and specific combinations of presence and absence of effector genes define each of the pandemic clonal lineages. CONCLUSIONS: Our analyses reconstruct the genetic history of the rice-infecting lineage of M. oryzae revealing three clonal lineages associated with rice blast pandemics. Each of these lineages displays a specific pattern of presence and absence of effector genes that may have shaped their adaptation to the rice host and their evolutionary history

    Rapid weed adaptation and range expansion in response to agriculture over the past two centuries

    North America has experienced a massive increase in cropland use since 1800, accompanied more recently by the intensification of agricultural practices. Through genome analysis of present-day and historical samples spanning environments over the past two centuries, we studied the effect of these changes in farming on the extent and tempo of evolution across the native range of the common waterhemp (Amaranthus tuberculatus), a now pervasive agricultural weed. Modern agriculture has imposed strengths of selection rarely observed in the wild, with notable shifts in allele frequency trajectories since agricultural intensification in the 1960s. An evolutionary response to this extreme selection was facilitated by a concurrent human-mediated range shift. By reshaping genome-wide diversity across the landscape, agriculture has driven the success of this weed in the 21st century

    The detection of minimal residual disease (MRD) is an important prognostic factor in childhood acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) providing crucial information on the response to treatment and risk of relapse. However, the high cost of these techniques restricts their use in countries with limited resources. Thus, we prospectively studied the use of flow cytometry (FC) with a simplified 3-color assay and a limited antibody panel to detect MRD in the bone marrow (BM) and peripheral blood (PB) of children with ALL. BM and PB samples from 40 children with ALL were analyzed on days (d) 14 and 28 during induction and in weeks 24-30 of maintenance therapy. Detectable MRD was defined as > 0.01% cells expressing the aberrant immunophenotype as characterized at diagnosis among total events in the sample. A total of 87% of the patients had an aberrant immunophenotype at diagnosis. On d14, 56% of the BM and 43% of the PB samples had detectable MRD. On d28, this decreased to 45% and 31%, respectively. The percentage of cells with the aberrant phenotype was similar in both BM and PB in T-ALL but about 10 times higher in the BM of patients with B-cell-precursor ALL. Moreover, MRD was detected in the BM of patients in complete morphological remission (44% on d14 and 39% on d28). MRD was not significantly associated to gender, age, initial white blood cell count or cell lineage. This FC assay is feasible, affordable and readily applicable to detect MRD in centers with limited resources.A detecção de doença residual mínima (DRM) é um importante fator prognóstico na leucemia linfóide aguda (LLA) infantil e fornece informações sobre a resposta ao tratamento e o risco de recaída. Entretanto, os altos custos das técnicas utilizadas limitam seu uso nos países em desenvolvimento. Desta forma, realizamos um estudo prospectivo para avaliar a citometria de fluxo (CF), utilizando três fluorescências e um painel limitado de anticorpos monoclonais, como método de detecção de DRM em medula óssea (MO) e sangue periférico (SP) de crianças com LLA. Amostras de MO e SP de 40 crianças portadoras de LLA foram analisadas nos dias (d)14 e d28 da indução e nas semanas 24-30 da terapia de manutenção. Foram consideradas como DRM+ as amostras que apresentaram > 0,01% das células com o fenótipo aberrante (FA). Oitenta e sete por cento dos pacientes apresentaram FA ao diagnóstico. No d14, 56% das amostras de MO e 43% do SP apresentaram DRM. No d28, foi detectada DRM em 45% e 31% das amostras de MO e SP, respectivamente. A porcentagem de DRM na MO foi similar à do SP nos casos de LLA-T, mas aproximadamente dez vezes maior na LLA de precursor-B. Foi detectada DRM na MO de 44% e 39% dos pacientes que estavam remissão morfológica nos d14 e d28, respectivamente. Não foi demonstrada associação significante entre a presença de DRM e sexo, idade, leucometria inicial e linhagem celular. Esta técnica de detecção de DRM por CF é relativamente barata e pode ser aplicada em centros com recursos limitados

    Improving equity, efficiency and adherence to referral in Pakistan's eye health programmes: Pre- and post-pandemic onset

    BackgroundOver one billion people worldwide live with avoidable blindness or vision impairment. Eye Health Programmes tackle this by providing screening, primary eye care, refractive correction, and referral to hospital eye services. One point where patients can be lost in the treatment journey is adherence to hospital referral.ContextPeek Vision's software solutions have been used in Pakistan with the goal of increasing eye health programme coverage and effectiveness. This involved collaboration between health system stakeholders, international partners, local community leaders, social organizers and “Lady Health Workers”.ResultsFrom the beginning of the programmes in November 2018, to the end of December 2021, 393,759 people have been screened, 26% of whom (n = 101,236) needed refractive services or secondary eye care, and so were referred onwards to the triage centers or hospital services. Except for a short period affected heavily by COVID-19 pandemic, the programmes reached an increasing number of people over time: screening coverage improved from 774 people per month to over 28,300 people per month. Gathering and discussing data regularly with stakeholders and implementers has enabled continuous improvement to service delivery. The quality of screening and adherence to hospital visits, gender balance differences and waiting time to hospital visits were also improved. Overall attendance to hospital appointments improved in 2020 compared to 2019 from 45% (95% CI: 42–48%) to 78% (95% CI: 76–80%) in women, and from 48% (95% CI: 45–52%) to 70% (95% CI: 68–73%) in men. These patients also accessed treatment more quickly: 30-day hospital referral adherence improved from 12% in 2019 to 66% in 2020. This approach helped to utilize refractive services more efficiently, reducing false positive referrals to triage from 10.6 to 5.9%. Hospital-based services were also utilized more efficiently, as primary eye care services and refractive services were mainly delivered at the primary healthcare level.DiscussionDespite various challenges, we demonstrate how data-driven decisions can lead to health programme systems changes, including patient counseling and appointment reminders, which can effectively improve adherence to referral, allowing programmes to better meet their community's needs

    Neural network parametrization of spectral functions from hadronic tau decays and determination of QCD vacuum condensates

    The spectral function ρVA(s)\rho_{V-A}(s) is determined from ALEPH and OPAL data on hadronic tau decays using a neural network parametrization trained to retain the full experimental information on errors, their correlations and chiral sum rules: the DMO sum rule, the first and second Weinberg sum rules and the electromagnetic mass splitting of the pion sum rule. Nonperturbative QCD vacuum condensates can then be determined from finite energy sum rules. Our method minimizes all sources of theoretical uncertainty and bias producing an estimate of the condensates which is independent of the specific finite energy sum rule used. The results for the central values of the condensates O6O_6 and O8O_8 are both negative.Comment: 29 pages, 18 ps figure

    Genomic rearrangements generate hypervariable mini-chromosomes in host-specific isolates of the blast fungus

    Supernumerary mini-chromosomes–a unique type of genomic structural variation–have been implicated in the emergence of virulence traits in plant pathogenic fungi. However, the mechanisms that facilitate the emergence and maintenance of mini-chromosomes across fungi remain poorly understood. In the blast fungus Magnaporthe oryzae (Syn. Pyricularia oryzae), mini-chromosomes have been first described in the early 1990s but, until very recently, have been overlooked in genomic studies. Here we investigated structural variation in four isolates of the blast fungus M. oryzae from different grass hosts and analyzed the sequences of mini-chromosomes in the rice, foxtail millet and goosegrass isolates. The mini-chromosomes of these isolates turned out to be highly diverse with distinct sequence composition. They are enriched in repetitive elements and have lower gene density than core-chromosomes. We identified several virulence-related genes in the mini-chromosome of the rice isolate, including the virulence-related polyketide synthase Ace1 and two variants of the effector gene AVR-Pik. Macrosynteny analyses around these loci revealed structural rearrangements, including inter-chromosomal translocations between core- and mini-chromosomes. Our findings provide evidence that mini-chromosomes emerge from structural rearrangements and segmental duplication of core-chromosomes and might contribute to adaptive evolution of the blast fungus

    Dating historical droughts from religious ceremonies, the international pro pluvia rogation database

    Climate proxy data are required for improved understanding of climate variability and change in the pre-instrumental period. We present the first international initiative to compile and share information on pro pluvia rogation ceremonies, which is a well-studied proxy of agricultural drought. Currently, the database has more than 3500 dates of celebration of rogation ceremonies, providing information for 153 locations across 11 countries spanning the period from 1333 to 1949. This product provides data for better understanding of the pre-instrumental drought variability, validating natural proxies and model simulations, and multi-proxy rainfall reconstructions, amongst other climatic exercises.     The REDMAAS 2014 intercomparison campaign: CPC, SMPS, UFPM and neutralizers

    Ponencia presentada en:2nd Iberian Meeting on Aerosol Science and Technology (RICTA 2014) celebrado en Tarragona del 7 al 9 de julio de 2014.The Spanish network on environmental DMAs (Red Española de DMAs Ambientales, REDMAAS), working since 2010, is currently formed by six groups involved in the measurement of atmospheric aerosol size distributions by means of Differential Mobility Analyzers (DMAs). One of its activities is an annual intercomparison of mobility size spectrometers (SMPS and UFPM). In this work we show the results obtained in the 2014 campaign: the verification of DMA calibrations with latex, the results of the CPC and SMPS + UFPM intercomparisons, and a comparison of the new TSI 3087 X-ray and the former TSI 3077 85Kr neutralizers. The concentrations measured by different types of CPC were within the range of 10% of the average value. CPCs working at higher flow rates measured slightly higher concentrations, probably related to the smaller losses in the lines. All the SMPS worked at the same sampling and sheath flow rates (1:10 lpm). Four of the SMPS gave very good results for particles larger than 20 nm. The UFPM measured particle number concentrations in the average +/-10% band measured by the SMPS. Instruments working with the X-ray neutralizer measured higher concentrations than with the 85Kr neutralizers.
