    Storm surge assessment methodology based on numerical modelling

    Coastal zones face severe weaknesses and high-risk situations due to coastal threats like erosion and storms and due to an increasing intensive occupation. Tropical storms events can contribute to the occurrence of these situations, by causing storm surges with high water levels and, consequently, episodes of waves overtopping and coastal flooding. This work aims to describe a methodology to estimate the storm surge occurrences in the Portuguese coastal zone, recurring to historical tropical storms data that occurred in the vicinity of Portugal and to numerical modeling of its characteristics. Delft3D software together with DelfDashboard tools were applied for the numerical modelling. An automatic generation procedure of storms was implemented based on the few available historical storms data characteristics. Obtained results allows to characterize storm surges along the Portuguese coast, identifying the most vulnerable areas and, consequently contributing for its proper planning and management.info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    A pessoa submetida a cirurgia urgente/emergente no contexto de uma unidade de cuidados intensivos: A prevenção de eventos adversos

    Introdução: As intervenções cirúrgicas emergentes correspondem a situações imprevisíveis que requerem atenção imediata, pois ameaçam a vida. Os doentes em unidades de cuidados intensivos (UCI), por vezes têm de ser submetidos a cirurgia urgente/emergente, devido a complicações e/ou agravamento do seu estado. Pela complexidade inerente ao período perioperatório e a condição crítica dos doentes, estão mais vulneráveis para a ocorrência de eventos adversos (EA).Objetivo: Contribuir para a prevenção de EA no período perioperatório da pessoa em situação crítica numa UCI com necessidade de cirurgia urgente/emergente. Material e Método: Estudo diagnóstico e intervenção sobre a preparação perioperatória da pessoa internada numa UCI de um Hospital de nível III. Os dados foram colhidos através de um questionário. Assegurámos, a participação voluntária, o direito à recusa e garantimos a privacidade e a confidencialidade. A intervenção consistiu numa formação e a conceção de uma proposta de Algoritmo de atuação dos enfermeiros perante uma situação crítica com necessidade de cirurgia urgente/emergente. Resultado: Obtivemos 40 respostas ao questionário. Todos os enfermeiros já haviam presenciado um EA durante o perioperatório, com gravidade ameaçadora de vida, sendo a maioria evitável. O cenário urgente/emergente foi considerado o fator que mais contribuiu para a ocorrência de EA, assim como as falhas de comunicação e a ausência de um método de organização. Conclusão: Evidenciámos, que a segurança do doente é um dever de todos os profissionais de saúde, em que o enfermeiro possui um papel primordial na prevenção da ocorrência dos EA, planeando e implementando cuidados de enfermagem personalizados e individualizados no perioperatórioinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersio

    The Mass-Metallicity relation explored with CALIFA: I. Is there a dependence on the star formation rate?

    We present the results on the study of the global and local M-Z relation based on the first data available from the CALIFA survey (150 galaxies). This survey provides integral field spectroscopy of the complete optical extent of each galaxy (up to 2-3 effective radii), with enough resolution to separate individual HII regions and/or aggregations. Nearly \sim3000 individual HII regions have been detected. The spectra cover the wavelength range between [OII]3727 and [SII]6731, with a sufficient signal-to-noise to derive the oxygen abundance and star-formation rate associated with each region. In addition, we have computed the integrated and spatially resolved stellar masses (and surface densities), based on SDSS photometric data. We explore the relations between the stellar mass, oxygen abundance and star-formation rate using this dataset. We derive a tight relation between the integrated stellar mass and the gas-phase abundance, with a dispersion smaller than the one already reported in the literature (σΔlog(O/H)=\sigma_{\Delta{\rm log(O/H)}}=0.07 dex). Indeed, this dispersion is only slightly larger than the typical error derived for our oxygen abundances. However, we do not find any secondary relation with the star-formation rate, other than the one induced due to the primary relation of this quantity with the stellar mass. We confirm the result using the \sim3000 individual HII regions, for the corresponding local relations. Our results agree with the scenario in which gas recycling in galaxies, both locally and globally, is much faster than other typical timescales, like that of gas accretion by inflow and/or metal loss due to outflows. In essence, late-type/disk dominated galaxies seem to be in a quasi-steady situation, with a behavior similar to the one expected from an instantaneous recycling/closed-box model.Comment: 19 Pages, 8 figures, Accepted for Publishing in Astronomy and Astrophysics (A&A

    Leucograma de bezerros Holstein sadios no primeiro mês de vida

    To establish reference values and to assess the influence of age on the leukograms of healthy Holstein calves, blood samples were obtained from 300 animals. These samples were distributed equally (n=20) among 15 experimental groups according to age: birth to 8 hours, 9 to 16 hours, 17 to 24 hours, 2 days, 3 days, 4 days, 5 days, 6 to 7 days, 8 to 9 days, 10 to 11 days, 12 to 13 days, 14 to 15 days, 16 to 20 days, 21 to 25 days and 26 to 30 days of age. The maximum numbers of leukocytes (9,305.0/mL), segmented neutrophils (6,551.2/mL) and total neutrophils (6,678.3/mL) were noted within the first 8 hours of life, while band neutrophils peaked in number (133.3/mL) between 9 and 16 hours after birth. Meanwhile, the maximum total lymphocyte (4,992.1/µL) and typical lymphocyte (4,686.1/µL) counts occurred between 21 and 25 days, whereas atypical lymphocytes (388.5/µL) reached their maximum number between 26 and 30 days, demonstrating an inversion of the neutrophil:lymphocyte ratio over time. Thus, the influence of age on the leukocyte count of the evaluated calves was verified. The release of endogenous corticosteroids during labor or at birth may contribute to this variation in leukograms with age.Com a finalidade de estabelecer os valores de referência e de avaliar a influência do fator etário sobre o leucograma de bezerras sadias, da raça Holandesa, utilizaram-se amostras de sangue de 300 animais, distribuídos com igual número (n=20) por 15 grupos experimentais, de acordo com a idade: do nascimento até 8 horas de vida; de 9 até 16 horas; de 17 até 24 horas; 2 dias de idade; 3 dias; 4 dias; 5 dias; 6 a 7 dias; 8 a 9 dias; 10 a 11 dias; 12 a 13 dias; 14 a 15 dias; de 16 a 20 dias; de 2l a 25 dias; e de 26 a 30 dias de vida. Puderam-se observar valores máximos nas primeiras oito horas de vida para leucócitos (9305,0/µL), neutrófilos segmentados (6551,2/µL) e neutrófilos totais (6678,3/µL); entre 9 a 16 horas pós-nascimento para os neutrófilos bastonetes (133,3/µL). Para os linfócitos totais (4992,1/µL) e os linfócitos típicos (4686,1/µL) os valores máximos ocorreram entre 21 e 25 dias, e para os linfócitos atípicos (388,5/µL), entre 26 e 30 dias, demonstrando-se uma inversão na relação neutrófilo: linfócito, com o decorrer dos dias de vida. Constatou-se a da influência do fator etário no leucograma dos bezerros avaliados, no entanto acredita-se que a liberação de corticoides endógenos no momento do parto/nascimento, contribuíram para esta variação

    The <i>Castalia</i> mission to Main Belt Comet 133P/Elst-Pizarro

    We describe Castalia, a proposed mission to rendezvous with a Main Belt Comet (MBC), 133P/Elst-Pizarro. MBCs are a recently discovered population of apparently icy bodies within the main asteroid belt between Mars and Jupiter, which may represent the remnants of the population which supplied the early Earth with water. Castalia will perform the first exploration of this population by characterising 133P in detail, solving the puzzle of the MBC’s activity, and making the first in situ measurements of water in the asteroid belt. In many ways a successor to ESA’s highly successful Rosetta mission, Castalia will allow direct comparison between very different classes of comet, including measuring critical isotope ratios, plasma and dust properties. It will also feature the first radar system to visit a minor body, mapping the ice in the interior. Castalia was proposed, in slightly different versions, to the ESA M4 and M5 calls within the Cosmic Vision programme. We describe the science motivation for the mission, the measurements required to achieve the scientific goals, and the proposed instrument payload and spacecraft to achieve these

    Maternal Protein Restriction in Two Successive Generations Impairs Mitochondrial Electron Coupling in the Progeny’s Brainstem of Wistar Rats From Both Sexes

    Maternal protein deficiency during the critical development period of the progeny disturbs mitochondrial metabolism in the brainstem, which increases the risk of developing cardiovascular diseases in the first-generation (F1) offspring, but is unknown if this effect persists in the second-generation (F2) offspring. The study tested whether mitochondrial health and oxidative balance will be restored in F2 rats. Male and female rats were divided into six groups according to the diet fed to their mothers throughout gestation and lactation periods. These groups were: (1) normoprotein (NP) and (2) low-protein (LP) rats of the first filial generation (F1-NP and F1-LP, respectively) and (3) NP and (4) LP rats of the second filial generation (F2-NP and F2-LP, respectively). After weaning, all groups received commercial chow and a portion of each group was sacrificed on the 30th day of life for determination of mitochondrial and oxidative parameters. The remaining portion of the F1 group was mated at adulthood and fed an NP or LP diet during the periods of gestation and lactation, to produce progeny belonging to (5) F2R-NP and (6) F2R-LP group, respectively. Our results demonstrated that male F1-LP rats suffered mitochondrial impairment associated with an 89% higher production of reactive species (RS) and 137% higher oxidative stress biomarkers, but that the oxidative stress was blunted in female F1-LP animals despite the antioxidant impairment. In the second generation following F0 malnutrition, brainstem antioxidant defenses were restored in the F2-LP group of both sexes. However, F2R-LP offspring, exposed to LP in the diets of the two preceding generations displayed a RS overproduction with a concomitant decrease in mitochondrial bioenergetics. Our findings demonstrate that nutritional stress during the reproductive life of the mother can negatively affect mitochondrial metabolism and oxidative balance in the brainstem of F1 progeny, but that restoration of a normal diet during the reproductive life of those individuals leads toward a mitochondrial recovery in their own (F2) progeny. Otherwise, if protein deprivation is continued from the F0 generation and into the F1 generation, the F2 progeny will exhibit no recovery, but instead will remain vulnerable to further oxidative damage

    The cyanobacterial saxitoxin exacerbates neural cell death and brain malformations induced by zika virus

    The northeast (NE) region of Brazil commonly goes through drought periods, which favor cyanobacterial blooms, capable of producing neurotoxins with implications for human and animal health. The most severe dry spell in the history of Brazil occurred between 2012 and 2016. Coincidently, the highest incidence of microcephaly associated with the Zika virus (ZIKV) outbreak took place in the NE region of Brazil during the same years. In this work, we tested the hypothesis that saxitoxin (STX), a neurotoxin produced in South America by the freshwater cyanobacteria Raphidiopsis raciborskii, could have contributed to the most severe Congenital Zika Syndrome (CZS) profile described worldwide. Quality surveillance showed higher cyanobacteria amounts and STX occurrence in human drinking water sup-plies of NE compared to other regions of Brazil. Experimentally, we described that STX dou-bled the quantity of ZIKV-induced neural cell death in progenitor areas of human brain organoids, while the chronic ingestion of water contaminated with STX before and during gestation caused brain abnormalities in offspring of ZIKV-infected immunocompetent C57BL/6J mice. Our data indicate that saxitoxin-producing cyanobacteria is overspread in water reservoirs of the NE and might have acted as a co-insult to ZIKV infection in Brazil. These results raise a public health concern regarding the consequences of arbovirus outbreaks happening in areas with droughts and/or frequent freshwater cyanobacterial blooms.Fil: Pedrosa, Carolina da S.
