    Willingness to Pay More to Stay at a Boutique Hotel with an Environmental Management System. A Preliminary Study in Spain.

    Since 1990, both people’s recognition of the need for sustainability around the world and environmental management systems in the tourism industry have been growing. Academic studies have primarily focused on the willingness of consumers to pay more to stay in major hotel chains, finding that the incorporation of environmental management systems (EMSs) is a way to save money by reducing costs, while improving the image and competitive advantage of these chains in the market. However, the aggregate environmental impact of tourism activity does not only depend on the practices of industry leaders. It also relates to the degree to which all stakeholders adopt these practices. Boutique hotels fall under the category of small-sized accommodation and are characterized by their size, independent management, and respect for the local environment. Hotel consumers display positive attitudes with respect to green hotel practices, which provides a starting point for motivating hotels to continue working on improving their environmental impact performance. For this reason, the objective of this paper is to determine whether boutique hotel clients are willing to pay more for a hotel with an environmental management system. Two dependence techniques are applied, logit regression and linear regression. The results show that the respondents’ age and income, as well as the strength of their environmental commitment, are determinant factors of whether clients would pay more to stay in a boutique hotel with an EMS. This preliminary study tries to investigate the “willingness to pay” in the Spanish boutique hotels. The originality of this article responds to the demand for a more holistic perspective on the hospitality sector, contributing to the understanding of hotel clients and their willingness to pay more for an EMS.post-print312 K

    Unravelling molecular responses to moderate dehydration in harvested fruit of sweet orange (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) using a fruit-specific ABA-deficient mutant

    Water stress affects many agronomic traits that may be regulated by the phytohormone abscisic acid (ABA). Within these traits, loss of fruit quality becomes important in many citrus cultivars that develop peel damage in response to dehydration. To study peel dehydration transcriptional responsiveness in harvested citrus fruit and the putative role of ABA in this process, this study performed a comparative large-scale transcriptional analysis of water-stressed fruits of the wild-type Navelate orange (Citrus sinesis L. Osbeck) and its spontaneous ABA-deficient mutant Pinalate, which is more prone to dehydration and to developing peel damage. Major changes in gene expression occurring in the wild-type line were impaired in the mutant fruit. Gene ontology analysis revealed the ability of Navelate fruits to induce the response to water deprivation and di-, tri-valent inorganic cation transport biological processes, as well as repression of the carbohydrate biosynthesis process in the mutant. Exogenous ABA triggered relevant transcriptional changes and repressed the protein ubiquitination process, although it could not fully rescue the physiological behaviour of the mutant. Overall, the results indicated that dehydration responsiveness requires ABA-dependent and-independent signals, and highlight that the ability of citrus fruits to trigger molecular responses against dehydration is an important factor in reducing their susceptibility to developing peel damage.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (Research Grants AGL2006-09496, AGL2009-11969, and AGL2009-11558) and by the Generalitat Valenciana (PROMETEO/2010/010).     Citrus phenylpropanoids and defence against pathogens. Part I: Metabolic profiling in elicited fruits

    Penicillium spp. are among the major postharvest pathogens of citrus fruit. Induction of natural resistance in fruits constitutes one of the alternatives to chemical fungicides. Here, we investigated the involvement of the phenylpropanoid pathway in the induction of resistance in Navelate oranges by examining changes in the metabolic profile of upon eliciting citrus fruits. By using both HPLC-PDA-FD and HPLC-PDA-QTOF-MS allowed the identification of several compounds that seem to be relevant for induced resistance. In elicited fruits, a greater diversity of phenolic compounds was observed in the flavedo (outer coloured part of the peel) when compared to the albedo (inner white part). Moreover, only small changes were detected in the most abundant citrus flavonoids. The coumarin scoparone was among the compounds with the highest induction upon elicitation. Two other highly induced compounds were identified as citrusnin A and drupanin aldehyde. All three compounds are known to exert antimicrobial activity.     Inhibiting ethylene perception with 1-methylcyclopropene triggers molecular responses aimed to cope with cell toxicity and increased respiration in citrus fruits

    The ethylene perception inhibitor 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) has been critical in understanding the hormone's mode of action. However, 1-MCP may trigger other processes that could vary the interpretation of results related until now to ethylene, which we aim to understand by using transcriptomic analysis. Transcriptomic changes in ethylene and 1-MCP-treated ‘Navelate’ (Citrus sinensis L. Osbeck) oranges were studied in parallel with changes in ethylene production, respiration and peel damage. The effects of compounds modifying the levels of the ethylene co-product cyanide and nitric oxide (NO) on fruit physiology were also studied. Results suggested that: 1) The ethylene treatment caused sub-lethal stress since it induced stress-related responses and reduced peel damage; 2) 1-MCP induced ethylenedependent and ethylene-independent responsive networks; 3) 1-MCP triggered ethylene overproduction, stress-related responses and metabolic shifts aimed to cope with cell toxicity, which mostly affected to the inner part of the peel (albedo); 4) 1-MCP increased respiration and drove metabolism reconfiguration for favoring energy conservation but up-regulated genes related to lipid and protein degradation and triggered the over-expression of genes associated with the plasma membrane cellular component; 5) Xenobiotics and/or reactive oxygen species (ROS) might act as signals for defense responses in the ethylene-treated fruit, while their uncontrolled generation would induce processes mimicking cell death and damage in 1-MCP-treated fruit; 6) ROS, the ethylene co-product cyanide and NO may converge in the toxic effects of 1-MCP.This work was supported by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (Research Grants AGL2002-1727 and AGL2009-11969 and by the Generalitat Valenciana, Spain (Grant PROMETEOII/2014/027).     Modelización de dispositivos de SiGe (HBTs) para un amplificador monoetapa

    An approach to heterojunction bipolar transistors (HBT’s) characterization and modeling is presented whit a compact HBT nonlinear circuit model which accounts for the temperature dependence effects. The parameters are extracted from DC and S-parameters measurements. The power characteristics of the device are then predicted using the extracted model without any further optimizations. The model has been implemented in MDS –HP nonlinear simulator. Good fitting is obtained in DC and scattering curves up to 40 GHz. An amplifier designed with the HBT67 transistors is presented. Simulations show good agreement with measurements

    Reproductive system and floral biology of Lantana camara (Verbenaceae) in a riparian population of the Río de la Plata

    Introducción y objetivos: La biología floral de Lantana camara L., nativa del Centro y Sur de América e invasora cosmopolita, tiene aspectos desconocidos y controvertidos. El objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar el sistema reproductivo, atributos florales y polinizadores en una población ribereña del Río de la Plata.M&M: Se emplearon los métodos usuales de la biología de la polinización. El estudio se realizó en Ciudad Universitaria, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina, en la primavera de 2012.Resultados: Las flores emiten olor leve y dulce mediante osmóforos que rodeanla entrada del tubo floral, coincidiendo con el patrón de absorción-reflexión en el espectro UV. El néctar se acumula en el tubo corolino, secretado probablemente por tricomas situados en la base. Durante la antesis, se suceden tres fases florales, distinguibles por cambios en la coloración de la corola, intensidad del aroma, cantidad de recompensa y madurez de las anteras y el estigma. Las flores, psicófilas, recibieron visitas de lepidópteros diurnos, y también de himenópteros, dípteros y colibríes. El mayor éxito reproductivo ocurrió con polinización libre; los índices de autocompatibilidad y P/O indicaron autocompatibilidad parcial y xenogamia facultativa, respectivamente.Conclusiones: L. camara se autopoliniza espontáneamente, probablemente unacausa de su propagación global. Debido a su actividad en las flores, fase floralvisitada, carga polínica y frecuencia de visitas sólo las mariposas Agraulis vanillae maculosa, Dryas iullia alcionea y Cymaenes sp. polinizarían en este sitio.Background and aims: The floral biology of Lantana camara, a native species of Central and South America and invasive cosmopolitan, still presents poorly-known and controversial aspects. The aim of this work was to determine the reproductive system, floral attributes and pollinators in a coastal population of Río de la Plata. M&M: The usual methods in pollination biology were employed. The study was performed in Ciudad Universitaria, Ciudad Autónoma de Buenos Aires, Argentina, during the spring of 2012. Results: The flowers emit mild and sweet odor by osmophores arranged around the floral tube entrance, in coincidence with the absorption-reflection pattern in the UV spectrum. Nectar accumulates in the floral tube, probably secreted by trichomes situated at the petals base. During anthesis, three floral phases succeed, distinguished by changes in corolla coloration, aroma intensity, reward quantity and anther and stigma maturity. The psychophilous flowers were visited by diurnal lepidopterans and by hymenopterans, dipterans and hummingbirds. The highest reproductive success occurred with free pollination; the self-incompatibility and P/O indexes showed partial self-compatibility and facultative xenogamy, respectively. Conclusions: L. camara is capable of successful spontaneous self-pollination, probably one reason of its global spread. Due to their activity on the flowers, visited floral phase, pollen load and frequency of visits, only the butterflies Agraulis vanillae maculosa, Dryas iullia alcionea and Cymaenes sp. would pollinate in this site.Fil: Amela Garcia, Maria Teresa.     Changes in Day/Night Activity in the 6-OHDA-Induced Experimental Model of Parkinson’s Disease: Exploring Prodromal Biomarkers

    The search for experimental models mimicking an early stage of Parkinson's disease (PD) before motor manifestations is fundamental in order to explore early signs and get a better prognosis. Interestingly, our previous studies have indicated that 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA) is a suitable model to induce an early degeneration of the nigrostriatal system without any gross motor impairment. Considering our previous findings, we aim to implement a novel system to monitor rats after intrastriatal injection of 6-OHDA to detect and analyze physiological changes underlying prodromal PD. Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats were unilaterally injected with 6-OHDA (n = 10) or saline solution (n = 10) into the right striatum and placed in enriched environment cages where the activity was monitored. After 2 weeks, the amphetamine test was performed before the sacrifice. Immunohistochemistry was developed for the morphological evaluation and western blot analysis to assess molecular changes. Home-cage monitoring revealed behavioral changes in response to 6-OHDA administration including significant hyperactivity and hypoactivity during the light and dark phase, respectively, turning out in a change of the circadian timing. A preclinical stage of PD was functionally confirmed with the amphetamine test. Moreover, the loss of tyrosine hydroxylase expression was significantly correlated with the motor results, and 6-OHDA induced early proapoptotic events.     [EN] This paper aims to expose the results of the multidisciplinary teaching innovation project approved and developed at the University of Zaragoza during the academic year 2018-2019 by professors of different knowledge areas, in particular, administrative law, civil law, commercial law and procedural law. The (main) objective of the Project is that the students in Law Degree and in the Degree in Law and Company Administration and Direction who are in the involved sujects acquire, in an autonomous way, knowledge on the consumer law.
