    Emission characteristics of nonmethane hydrocarbons from private cars and taxis at different driving speeds in Hong Kong

    Vehicular emissions are the major sources of a number of air pollutants including nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) in urban area. The emission composition and emission factors of NMHCs from vehicles are currently lacking in Hong Kong. In this study, speciation and emission factors of NMHCs emitted from gasoline-fuelled private cars and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG)-fuelled taxis at different driving speeds were constructed using a chassis dynamometer. Large variations in the contributions of individual NMHC species to total emission were observed for different private cars at different driving speeds. The variations of individual NMHC emissions were relatively smaller for taxis due to their relatively homogeneous year of manufacture and mileages. Incomplete combustion products like ethane, ethene and propene were the major component of both types of vehicles, while unburned fuel component was also abundant in the exhausts of private cars and taxis (i.e. i-pentane and toluene for private car, and propane and butanes for taxi). Emission factors of major NMHCs emitted from private cars and taxis were estimated. High emission factors of ethane, n-butane, i/n-pentanes, methylpentanes, trimethylpentanes, ethene, propene, i-butene, benzene, toluene and xylenes were found for private cars, whereas propane and i/n-butanes had the highest values for taxis. By evaluating the effect of vehicular emissions on the ozone formation potential (OFP), it was found that the contributions of olefinic and aromatic hydrocarbons to OFP were higher than that from paraffinic hydrocarbons for private car, whereas the contributions of propane and i/n-butanes were the highest for taxis. The total OFP value was higher at lower speeds (≤50 km h-1) for private cars while a minimum value at driving speed of 100 km h-1 was found for taxis. At the steady driving speeds, the total contribution of NMHCs emitted from LPG-fuelled taxis to the OFP was much lower than that from gasoline-fuelled private cars. However, at idling state, the contribution of NMHCs from LPG-fuelled vehicles to OFP was comparable to that from gasoline-fuelled vehicles. The findings obtained in this study can be used to mitigate the air pollution caused by vehicles in highly dense urban areas. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd

The beam scanning ability is realized by employing a reconfigurable PRS structure and a phased array as the source. The design achieves a beam switching between -15°, 0°, to 15° with respect to the broadside direction from 5.5 GHz to 5.7 GHz with the realized gains over 12 dBi. Good agreement between the simulated and measured results is achieved

    Characteristics of nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs) in industrial, industrial-urban, and industrial-suburban atmospheres of the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of south China

    In a study conducted in late summer 2000, a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were measured throughout five target cities in the Pearl River Delta (PRD) region of south China. Twenty-eight nonmethane hydrocarbons (NMHCs; 13 saturated, 9 unsaturated, and 6 aromatic) are discussed. The effect of rapid industrialization was studied for three categories of landuse in the PRD: Industrial, industrial-urban, and industrial-suburban. The highest VOC mixing ratios were observed in industrial areas. Despite its relatively short atmospheric lifetime (2-3 days), toluene, which is largely emitted from industrial solvent use and vehicular emissions, was the most abundant NMHC quantified. Ethane, ethene, ethyne, propane, n-butane, i-pentane, benzene, and m-xylene were the next most abundant VOCs. Direct emissions from industrial activities were found to greatly impact the air quality in nearby neighborhoods. These emissions lead to large concentration variations for many VOCs in the five PRD study cities. Good correlations between isoprene and several short-lived combustion products were found in industrial areas, suggesting that in addition to biogenic sources, anthropogenic emissions may contribute to urban isoprene levels. This study provides a snapshot of industrial, industrial-urban, and industrial-suburban NMHCs in the five most industrially developed cities of the PRD. Increased impact of industrial activities on PRD air quality due to the rapid spread of industry from urban to suburban and rural areas, and the decrease of farmland, is expected to continue until effective emission standards are implemented.     Effects of exogenous spermidine on photosynthesis, xanthophyll cycle and endogenous polyamines in cucumber seedlings exposed to salinity

    The effects of exogenous spermidine (Spd, 1 mmol·L-1) on photosynthetic characteristics, xanthophylls cycle components and endogenous polyamines levels were investigated in cucumber seedlings subjected to salt stress (75 mmol·L-1 NaCl). Chlorophyll contents and net photosynthetic rate (PN) of cucumber seedlings showed a significant decrease under salinity but an increase with exogenous Spd application. Salt stress caused a remarkable decline in the maximum quantum efficiency (Fv/Fm) and the actual efficiency of photosystem II (ФPSⅡ), where an increase was observed in the constitutive loss processes (ΦNO). Application of exogenous Spd significantly decreased ФNO and enhanced regulated non-photochemical energy loss (ФNPQ) in the salt-stressed plants. Spd treatment caused an increase in the size of xanthophyll cycle pool (VAZ) and further enhanced de-epoxidation of the xanthophyll cycle (DEPS) under salt stress. These results suggest that exogenous Spd alleviated salt-mediated decline in photosynthetic efficiency through the enhanced involvement of the energy dissipation that is dependent on the xanthophyll cycle. In addition, foliar spray Spd significantly increased the free, bound and conjugated polyamines in the leaves of the salt stressed plants. Spd also increased the free putrescine (Put)/(Spd+Spm) ratio and decreased bound and conjugated Put/(Spd+Spm) under salinity. Thus, we conclude that Spd can alleviate salt-induced damage on cucumber seedlings by regulating the levels of endogenous polyamines, which was associated with an improvement in the photochemical efficiency of PSII of the salt stressed plants.Key words: Cucumber, endogenous polyamines, photosynthetic characteristics, salt stress, spermidine

    A wideband polarization reconfigurable antenna for WLAN applications

It consists of a shorted annular patch (SAP) antenna as the source, a partially reflective surface (PRS) structure to enhance the gain, and a reconfigurable Wilkinson power divider as the feed network. The antenna can electronically alter its polarization between linear polarization (LP), left-hand circular polarization (LHCP), and right-hand circular polarization (RHCP),achieving an overlapped 10dB impedance bandwidth and 3 dB axial-ratio bandwidth of 4.68-5.33 GHz (13%), thus outperforming most of the reported polarization reconfigurable antennas in terms of the frequency bandwidth

    Optimization of fermentation medium for nisin production from Lactococcus lactis subsp. lactis using response surface methodology (RSM) combined with artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA)

    Nisin is a bacteriocin approved in more than 50 countries as a safe natural food preservative. Response surface methodology (RSM) combined with artificial neural network-genetic algorithm (ANN-GA) was employed to optimize the fermentation medium for nisin production. Plackett-Burman design (PBD) was used for identifying the significant components in the fermentation medium. After that, the path of steepest ascent method (PSA) was employed to approach their optimal concentrations. Sequentially, Box-Behnken design experiments were implemented for further optimization. RSM combined with ANNGA were used for analysis of data. Specially, a RSM model was used for determining the individual effect and mutual interaction effect of tested variables on nisin titer (NT), an ANN model was used for NT prediction, and GA was employed to search for the optimum solutions based on the ANN model. As the optimal medium obtained by ANN-GA was located at the verge of the test region, a further Box- Behnken design based on the RSM statistical analysis results was implemented. ANN-GA was implemented using the further Box-Behnken design data to locate the optimum solution which was as follow (g/l): Glucose (GLU) 15.92, peptone (PEP) 30.57, yeast extraction powder (YEP) 39.07, NaCl 5.25, KH2PO4 10.00, and MgSO4·7H2O 0.20, with expected NT of 22216 IU/ml. The validation experiments with the optimum solution were implemented in triplicate and the average NT was 21423 IU/ml, which was 2.13 times higher than that without ANN-GA methods and 8.34 times higher than that without optimization.Key words: Response surface methodology, artificial neural network, genetic algorithm, nisin titer

    Investigating Interactions of Biomembranes and Alcohols: A Multiscale Approach

    We study the interaction of lipid bilayers with short chain alcohols using molecular dynamics on different length scales. We use detailed atomistic modeling and modeling on the length scale where an alcohol is just an amphiphilic dimer. Our strategy is to calibrate a coarse--grained model against the detailed model at selected state points at low alcohol concentration and then perform a wider range of simulations using the coarse--grained model. We get semiquantitative agreement with experiment for the major observables such as order parameter and area per molecule. We find a linear increase of area per molecule with alcohol concentration. The alcohol molecules in both system descriptions are in close contact with the glycerol backbone. Butanol molecules can enter the bilayer to some extent in contrast to the behavior of shorter alcohols. At very high alcohol concentrations we find clearly increased interdigitation between leaflets.Comment: 14 pages, 6 figure

    The direct influence of retinal degeneration on electrical stimulation efficacy: Significant implications for retinal prostheses

    Photoreceptor loss and inner retinal network remodeling severely impacts the ability of retinal prosthetic devices to create artificial vision. We developed a computational model of a degenerating retina based on rodent data and tested its response to retinal electrical stimulation. This model includes detailed network connectivity and diverse neural intrinsic properties, capable of exploring how the degenerated retina influences the performance of electrical stimulation during the degeneration process. Our model suggests the possibility of quantitatively modulating retinal ON and OFF pathways between phase II and III of retinal degeneration without requiring any differences between ON and OFF RGC intrinsic cellular properties. The model also provided insights about how remodeling events influence stage-dependent differential electrical responses of ON and OFF pathways.Clinical Relevance-This data-driven model can guide future development of retinal prostheses and stimulation strategies that may benefit patients at different stages of retinal disease progression, particularly in the early and mid-stages, thus increasing their global acceptance

    Multi-Wavelength View of Kiloparsec-Scale Clumps in Star-Forming Galaxies at z~2

    This paper studies the properties of kiloparsec-scale clumps in star-forming galaxies at z~2 through multi-wavelength broad band photometry. A sample of 40 clumps is identified through auto-detection and visual inspection from 10 galaxies with 1.5<z<2.5 in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field, where deep and high-resolution HST/WFC3 and ACS images enable us to resolve structures of z~2 galaxies down to kpc scale in the rest-frame UV and optical bands as well as to detect clumps toward the faint end. The physical properties of clumps are measured through fitting spatially resolved seven-band (BVizYJH) spectral energy distribution to models. On average, the clumps are blue and have similar median rest-frame UV--optical color as the diffuse components of their host galaxies, but the clumps have large scatter in their colors. Although the star formation rate (SFR)--stellar mass relation of galaxies is dominated by the diffuse components, clumps emerge as regions with enhanced specific SFRs, contributing individually ~10% and together ~50% of the SFR of the host galaxies. However, the contributions of clumps to the rest-frame UV/optical luminosity and stellar mass are smaller, typically a few percent individually and ~20% together. On average, clumps are younger by 0.2 dex and denser by a factor of 8 than diffuse components. Clump properties have obvious radial variations in the sense that central clumps are redder, older, more extincted, denser, and less active on forming stars than outskirts clumps. Our results are broadly consistent with a widely held view that clumps are formed through gravitational instability in gas-rich turbulent disks and would eventually migrate toward galactic centers and coalesce into bulges. Roughly 40% of the galaxies in our sample contain a massive clump that could be identified as a proto-bulge, which seems qualitatively consistent with such a bulge-formation scenario.Comment: Accepted by ApJ.
