A qualitative exploration of whether lesbian and bisexual women are 'protected' from sociocultural pressure to be thin
Heterosexual women in Western cultures are known to experience body image concerns, dieting and disordered eating as a result of intense social pressures to be thin. However, it is theorised that lesbian and bisexual women belong to a subculture that is ‘protective’ of such demands. Fifteen non-heterosexual women were interviewed about their experiences of social pressure. Thematic analysis of their accounts suggests that such theorising may be inaccurate, because these lesbian and bisexual women did not feel ‘protected’ from social pressures and experienced body dissatisfaction. While they might attempt to resist thin idealisation, resistance is not centred around their sexuality
Genetic Algorithm with Optimal Recombination for the Asymmetric Travelling Salesman Problem
We propose a new genetic algorithm with optimal recombination for the
asymmetric instances of travelling salesman problem. The algorithm incorporates
several new features that contribute to its effectiveness: (i) Optimal
recombination problem is solved within crossover operator. (ii) A new mutation
operator performs a random jump within 3-opt or 4-opt neighborhood. (iii)
Greedy constructive heuristic of W.Zhang and 3-opt local search heuristic are
used to generate the initial population. A computational experiment on TSPLIB
instances shows that the proposed algorithm yields competitive results to other

Direct high-precision measurement of the magnetic moment of the proton
The spin-magnetic moment of the proton is a fundamental property of
this particle. So far has only been measured indirectly, analysing the
spectrum of an atomic hydrogen maser in a magnetic field. Here, we report the
direct high-precision measurement of the magnetic moment of a single proton
using the double Penning-trap technique. We drive proton-spin quantum jumps by
a magnetic radio-frequency field in a Penning trap with a homogeneous magnetic
field. The induced spin-transitions are detected in a second trap with a strong
superimposed magnetic inhomogeneity. This enables the measurement of the
spin-flip probability as a function of the drive frequency. In each measurement
the proton's cyclotron frequency is used to determine the magnetic field of the
trap. From the normalized resonance curve, we extract the particle's magnetic
moment in units of the nuclear magneton . This
measurement outperforms previous Penning trap measurements in terms of
precision by a factor of about 760. It improves the precision of the forty year
old indirect measurement, in which significant theoretical bound state
corrections were required to obtain , by a factor of 3. By application
of this method to the antiproton magnetic moment the fractional
precision of the recently reported value can be improved by a factor of at
least 1000. Combined with the present result, this will provide a stringent
test of matter/antimatter symmetry with baryons.Comment: published in Natur
Liraglutide and Cardiovascular Outcomes in Type 2 Diabetes
Background The cardiovascular effect of liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide 1 analogue, when added to standard care in patients with type 2 diabetes, remains unknown. Methods In this double-blind trial, we randomly assigned patients with type 2 diabetes and high cardiovascular risk to receive liraglutide or placebo. The primary composite outcome in the time-to-event analysis was the first occurrence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke. The primary hypothesis was that liraglutide would be noninferior to placebo with regard to the primary outcome, with a margin of 1.30 for the upper boundary of the 95% confidence interval of the hazard ratio. No adjustments for multiplicity were performed for the prespecified exploratory outcomes. Results A total of 9340 patients underwent randomization. The median follow-up was 3.8 years. The primary outcome occurred in significantly fewer patients in the liraglutide group (608 of 4668 patients [13.0%]) than in the placebo group (694 of 4672 [14.9%]) (hazard ratio, 0.87; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.78 to 0.97; P<0.001 for noninferiority; P=0.01 for superiority). Fewer patients died from cardiovascular causes in the liraglutide group (219 patients [4.7%]) than in the placebo group (278 [6.0%]) (hazard ratio, 0.78; 95% CI, 0.66 to 0.93; P=0.007). The rate of death from any cause was lower in the liraglutide group (381 patients [8.2%]) than in the placebo group (447 [9.6%]) (hazard ratio, 0.85; 95% CI, 0.74 to 0.97; P=0.02). The rates of nonfatal myocardial infarction, nonfatal stroke, and hospitalization for heart failure were nonsignificantly lower in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group. The most common adverse events leading to the discontinuation of liraglutide were gastrointestinal events. The incidence of pancreatitis was nonsignificantly lower in the liraglutide group than in the placebo group. Conclusions In the time-to-event analysis, the rate of the first occurrence of death from cardiovascular causes, nonfatal myocardial infarction, or nonfatal stroke among patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus was lower with liraglutide than with placebo. The -theorem and the Asymptotics of 4D Quantum Field Theory
We study the possible IR and UV asymptotics of 4D Lorentz invariant unitary
quantum field theory. Our main tool is a generalization of the
Komargodski-Schwimmer proof for the -theorem. We use this to rule out a
large class of renormalization group flows that do not asymptote to conformal
field theories in the UV and IR. We show that if the IR (UV) asymptotics is
described by perturbation theory, all beta functions must vanish faster than
as (). This implies that the
only possible asymptotics within perturbation theory is conformal field theory.
In particular, it rules out perturbative theories with scale but not conformal
invariance, which are equivalent to theories with renormalization group
pseudocycles. Our arguments hold even for theories with gravitational
anomalies. We also give a non-perturbative argument that excludes theories with
scale but not conformal invariance. This argument holds for theories in which
the stress-energy tensor is sufficiently nontrivial in a technical sense that

Galaxy and Mass Assembly (GAMA): maximum likelihood determination of the luminosity function and its evolution
We describe modifications to the joint stepwise maximum likelihood method of Cole (2011) in order to simultaneously fit the GAMA-II galaxy luminosity function (LF), corrected for radial density variations, and its evolution with redshift. The whole sample is reasonably well-fit with luminosity (Qe) and density (Pe) evolution parameters Qe, Pe = 1.0, 1.0 but with significant degeneracies characterized by Qe = 1.4 - 0.4Pe. Blue galaxies exhibit larger luminosity density evolution than red galaxies, as expected. We present the evolution-corrected r-band LF for the whole sample and for blue and red sub-samples, using both Petrosian and Sersic magnitudes. Petrosian magnitudes miss a substantial fraction of the flux of de Vaucouleurs profile galaxies: the Sersic LF is substantially higher than the Petrosian LF at the bright end

Women’s pelvic floor muscle strength and urinary and anal incontinence after childbirth: a cross-sectional study
Abstract OBJECTIVE To analyse pelvic floor muscle strength (PFMS) and urinary and anal incontinence (UI and AI) in the postpartum period. METHOD Cross-sectional study carried out with women in their first seven months after child birth. Data were collected through interviews, perineometry (Peritron™), and the International Consultation on Incontinence Questionnaire-Short Form (ICIQ-SF). RESULTS 128 women participated in the study. The PFMS mean was 33.1 (SD=16.0) cmH2O and the prevalence of UI and AI was 7.8% and 5.5%, respectively. In the multiple analyses, the variables associated with PFMS were type of birth and cohabitation with a partner. Newborn’s weight, previous pregnancy, UI during pregnancy, and sexual activity showed an association with UI after child birth. Only AI prior to pregnancy was associated with AI after childbirth. CONCLUSION Vaginal birth predisposes to the reduction of PFMS, and caesarean section had a protective effect to its reduction. The occurrence of UI during pregnancy is a predictor of UI after childbirth, and women with previous pregnancies and newborns with higher weights are more likely to have UI after childbirth.AI prior to pregnancy is the only risk factor for its occurrence after childbirth. Associations between PFMS and cohabitation with a partner, and between UI and sexual activity do not make possible to conclude that these variables are directly associated

Effects of deletion of the Streptococcus pneumoniae lipoprotein diacylglyceryl transferase gene lgt on ABC transporter function and on growth in vivo
Lipoproteins are an important class of surface associated proteins that have diverse roles and frequently are involved in the virulence of bacterial pathogens. As prolipoproteins are attached to the cell membrane by a single enzyme, prolipoprotein diacylglyceryl transferase (Lgt), deletion of the corresponding gene potentially allows the characterisation of the overall importance of lipoproteins for specific bacterial functions. We have used a Δlgt mutant strain of Streptococcus pneumoniae to investigate the effects of loss of lipoprotein attachment on cation acquisition, growth in media containing specific carbon sources, and virulence in different infection models. Immunoblots of triton X-114 extracts, flow cytometry and immuno-fluorescence microscopy confirmed the Δlgt mutant had markedly reduced lipoprotein expression on the cell surface. The Δlgt mutant had reduced growth in cation depleted medium, increased sensitivity to oxidative stress, reduced zinc uptake, and reduced intracellular levels of several cations. Doubling time of the Δlgt mutant was also increased slightly when grown in medium with glucose, raffinose and maltotriose as sole carbon sources. These multiple defects in cation and sugar ABC transporter function for the Δlgt mutant were associated with only slightly delayed growth in complete medium. However the Δlgt mutant had significantly reduced growth in blood or bronchoalveolar lavage fluid and a marked impairment in virulence in mouse models of nasopharyngeal colonisation, sepsis and pneumonia. These data suggest that for S. pneumoniae loss of surface localisation of lipoproteins has widespread effects on ABC transporter functions that collectively prevent the Δlgt mutant from establishing invasive infection
Photometric redshifts for the Kilo-Degree Survey. Machine-learning analysis with artificial neural networks
We present a machine-learning photometric redshift analysis of the
Kilo-Degree Survey Data Release 3, using two neural-network based techniques:
ANNz2 and MLPQNA. Despite limited coverage of spectroscopic training sets,
these ML codes provide photo-zs of quality comparable to, if not better than,
those from the BPZ code, at least up to zphot<0.9 and r<23.5. At the bright end
of r<20, where very complete spectroscopic data overlapping with KiDS are
available, the performance of the ML photo-zs clearly surpasses that of BPZ,
currently the primary photo-z method for KiDS.
Using the Galaxy And Mass Assembly (GAMA) spectroscopic survey as
calibration, we furthermore study how photo-zs improve for bright sources when
photometric parameters additional to magnitudes are included in the photo-z
derivation, as well as when VIKING and WISE infrared bands are added. While the
fiducial four-band ugri setup gives a photo-z bias and scatter
at mean z = 0.23, combining magnitudes, colours, and galaxy
sizes reduces the scatter by ~7% and the bias by an order of magnitude. Once
the ugri and IR magnitudes are joined into 12-band photometry spanning up to 12
, the scatter decreases by more than 10% over the fiducial case. Finally,
using the 12 bands together with optical colours and linear sizes gives and .
This paper also serves as a reference for two public photo-z catalogues
accompanying KiDS DR3, both obtained using the ANNz2 code. The first one, of
general purpose, includes all the 39 million KiDS sources with four-band ugri
measurements in DR3. The second dataset, optimized for low-redshift studies
such as galaxy-galaxy lensing, is limited to r<20, and provides photo-zs of
much better quality than in the full-depth case thanks to incorporating optical
magnitudes, colours, and sizes in the GAMA-calibrated photo-z derivation.Comment: A&A, in press. Data available from the KiDS website
