    Temperature dependence of current self-oscillations and electric field domains in sequential tunneling doped superlattices

    We examine how the current--voltage characteristics of a doped weakly coupled superlattice depends on temperature. The drift velocity of a discrete drift model of sequential tunneling in a doped GaAs/AlAs superlattice is calculated as a function of temperature. Numerical simulations and theoretical arguments show that increasing temperature favors the appearance of current self-oscillations at the expense of static electric field domain formation.     Evolution of Anisotropy in Granular Materials: Effect of Particle Rolling and Particle Crushing

    The effect of particle rolling and crushing on the evolutions of the two types of anisotropy, i.e., anisotropy of particle packing (microstructure) and anisotropy of force chains, is investigated numerically using the discrete element method. To this end, the classical fabric tensor is adopted to describe the anisotropy of microstructure, while two similar orientation tensors defined by the directions of contact forces are used to characterize the anisotropy of force chains. Numerical results show that the evolutions of anisotropy follows the same tendency as the stress–strain curve, and the anisotropy of force chains is more intense than that of the microstructure. In addition, particle rolling exerts different effect on anisotropy before and after the peak stress state, and particle crushing decreases the anisotropy of granular materials.Представлено чисельне дослідження за допомогою методу дискретних елементів впливу скочування і дроблення частинок на еволюцію анізотропій скочування частинок (мікроструктура) і силового ланцюжка. Для опису анізотропії мікроструктури використовується структурний класичний тензор, а два аналогічних тензора орієнтації, що характеризуються напрямком контактних зусиль, – для визначення анізотропії силового ланцюжка. Результати чисельного дослідження показали, що еволюція анізотропій має той же характер, що і залежність деформації від напруження, однак анізотропія силового ланцюжка є більш інтенсивною порівняно з анізотропією мікроструктури. Більш того, скочування частинок по-різному впливає на анізотропію до і після досягнення максимального значення напруження, в той час як дроблення частинок зменшує анізотропію гранульованих матеріалів.Представлено численное исследование с помощью метода дискретных элементов влияния скатывания и дробления частиц на эволюцию анизотропий скатывания частиц (микроструктура) и силовой цепочки. Для описания анизотропии микроструктуры используется структурный классический тензор, а два аналогичных тензора ориентации, характеризующихся направлением контактных усилий, – для определения анизотропии силовой цепочки.     Medium and source convergence in crisis information acquisition: Patterns, antecedents, and outcomes

    To understand how individuals navigate the complex, dynamic, and bewildering media information environment, we propose a convergence framework theorizing individuals' acquisition of information from distinct sources on multiple mediums, along with its antecedents and consequences. This study is among the first to test the convergence framework. Using a national sample during the COVID-19 pandemic, our results revealed four convergence patterns and key antecedents and outcomes of these patterns. Individuals' information verification tendency, perceived medium anonymity, and trust in alternative sources were associated with distinct patterns of convergence, which led to different risk perceptions. Future research should explore different forms of convergence and additional antecedents and outcomes of convergence

    What on Earth have we been burning? Deciphering sedimentary records of pyrogenic carbon

    Humans have interacted with fire for thousands of years, yet the utilization of fossil fuels marked the beginning of a new era. Ubiquitous in the environment, pyrogenic carbon (PyC) arises from incomplete combustion of biomass and fossil fuels, forming a continuum of condensed aromatic structures. Here we develop and evaluate 14C records for two complementary PyC molecular markers, benzene-polycarboxylic-acids (BPCAs) and polycyclic-aromatic-hydrocarbons (PAHs) preserved in aquatic sediments from a sub-urban and a remote catchment in the United States (U.S.) from mid-1700s to 1998. Results show that the majority of PyC stems from local sources and is transferred to aquatic sedimentary archives on sub-decadal to millennial time scales. Whereas a small portion stems from near-contemporaneous production and sedimentation, the majority of PyC (<90%) experiences delayed transmission due to ‘pre-aging’ on millennial timescales in catchment soils prior to its ultimate deposition. BPCAs (soot) and PAHs (precursors of soot) trace fossil fuel-derived PyC. Both markers parallel historical records of the consumption of fossil fuels in U.S., yet never account for more than 19% total PyC. This study demonstrates that isotopic characterization of multiple tracers is necessary to constrain histories and inventories of PyC, and that sequestration of PyC can markedly lag its production

    Detection of herb-symptom associations from traditional chinese medicine clinical data

    YesTraditional Chinese medicine (TCM) is an individualized medicine by observing the symptoms and signs (symptoms in brief) of patients. We aim to extract the meaningful herb-symptom relationships from large scale TCM clinical data. To investigate the correlations between symptoms and herbs held for patients, we use four clinical data sets collected from TCM outpatient clinical settings and calculate the similarities between patient pairs in terms of the herb constituents of their prescriptions and their manifesting symptoms by cosine measure. To address the large-scale multiple testing problems for the detection of herb-symptom associations and the dependence between herbs involving similar efficacies, we propose a network-based correlation analysis (NetCorrA) method to detect the herb-symptom associations. The results show that there are strong positive correlations between symptom similarity and herb similarity, which indicates that herb-symptom correspondence is a clinical principle adhered to by most TCM physicians. Furthermore, the NetCorrA method obtains meaningful herb-symptom associations and performs better than the chi-square correlation method by filtering the false positive associations. Symptoms play significant roles for the prescriptions of herb treatment. The herb-symptom correspondence principle indicates that clinical phenotypic targets (i.e., symptoms) of herbs exist and would be valuable for further investigations

    The lower order terms of the heat kernel expansion at coincident points are computed in the context of finite temperature quantum field theory for flat space-time and in the presence of general gauge and scalar fields which may be non Abelian and non stationary. The computation is carried out in the imaginary time formalism and the result is fully consistent with invariance under topologically large and small gauge transformations.     A Model for Dark Energy decay

    We discuss a model of non perturbative decay of dark energy into hot and cold dark matter. This model provides a mechanism from the field theory to realize the energy transfer from dark energy into dark matter, which is the requirement to alleviate the coincidence problem. The advantage of the model is the fact that we accommodate a mean life compatible with the age of the universe.     SORLA attenuates EphA4 signaling and amyloid, β-induced neurodegeneration

    Sortilin-related receptor with LDLR class A repeats (SORLA, SORL1, or LR11) is a genetic risk factor associated with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Although SORLA is known to regulate trafficking of the amyloid {beta} (A{beta}) precursor protein to decrease levels of proteotoxic A{beta} oligomers, whether SORLA can counteract synaptic dysfunction induced by A{beta} oligomers remains unclear. Here, we show that SORLA interacts with the EphA4 receptor tyrosine kinase and attenuates ephrinA1 ligand-induced EphA4 clustering and activation to limit downstream effects of EphA4 signaling in neurons. Consistent with these findings, SORLA transgenic mice, compared with WT mice, exhibit decreased EphA4 activation and redistribution to postsynaptic densities, with milder deficits in long-term potentiation and memory induced by A{beta} oligomers. Importantly, we detected elevated levels of active EphA4 in human AD brains, where EphA4 activation is inversely correlated with SORLA/EphA4 association. These results demonstrate a novel role for SORLA as a physiological and pathological EphA4 modulator, which attenuates synaptotoxic EphA4 activation and cognitive impairment associated with A{beta}-induced neurodegeneration in AD

    Nonleptonic Weak Decays of Bottom Baryons

    Cabibbo-allowed two-body hadronic weak decays of bottom baryons are analyzed. Contrary to the charmed baryon sector, many channels of bottom baryon decays proceed only through the external or internal W-emission diagrams. Moreover, W-exchange is likely to be suppressed in the bottom baryon sector. Consequently, the factorization approach suffices to describe most of the Cabibbo-allowed bottom baryon decays. We use the nonrelativistic quark model to evaluate heavy-to-heavy and heavy-to-light baryon form factors at zero recoil. When applied to the heavy quark limit, the quark model results do satisfy all the constraints imposed by heavy quark symmetry. The decay rates and up-down asymmetries for bottom baryons decaying into (1/2)++P(V)(1/2)^++P(V) and (3/2)++P(V)(3/2)^++P(V) are calculated. It is found that the up-down asymmetry is negative except for Ωb(1/2)++P(V)\Omega_b \to (1/2)^++P(V) decay and for decay modes with ψ\psi' in the final state. The prediction B(ΛbJ/ψΛ)=1.6×104B(\Lambda_b \to J/\psi\Lambda)=1.6 \times 10^{-4} for Vcb=0.038|V_{cb}|=0.038 is consistent with the recent CDF measurement.     First-in-class Microbial Ecosystem Therapeutic 4 (MET4) in combination with immune checkpoint inhibitors in patients with advanced solid tumors (MET4-IO trial)

    Background: The intestinal microbiome has been associated with response to immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) in humans and causally implicated in ICI responsiveness in animal models. Two recent human trials demonstrated that fecal microbiota transplant (FMT) from ICI responders can rescue ICI responses in refractory melanoma, but FMT has specific limitations to scaled use.Patients and methods: We conducted an early-phase clinical trial of a cultivated, orally delivered 30-species microbial consortium (Microbial Ecosystem Therapeutic 4, MET4) designed for co-administration with ICIs as an alternative to FMT and assessed safety, tolerability and ecological responses in patients with advanced solid tumors.Results: The trial achieved its primary safety and tolerability outcomes. There were no statistically significant differences in the primary ecological outcomes; however, differences in MET4 species relative abundance were evident after randomization that varied by patient and species. Increases in the relative abundance of several MET4 taxa, including Enterococcus and Bifidobacterium, taxa previously associated with ICI responsiveness, were observed and MET4 engraftment was associated with decreases in plasma and stool primary bile acids.Conclusions: This trial is the first report of the use of a microbial consortium as an alternative to FMT in advanced cancer patients receiving ICI and the results justify the further development of microbial consortia as a therapeutic co-intervention for ICI treatment in cancer
