This work intends to shed light on Duarte Días, a little-known 16th century Portuguese author who wrote poetry in both Portuguese and Spanish during the reign of King Phillip II. This paper provides a biographical approach and analyses his two main works– La conquista de Granada, 1590, and Várias obras em língua portuguesa e castelhana, 1592–, while at the same time serves as an inventory of printed issues of both books known to date. The paper focuses on the codex of the Várias obras, located in Archivo Histórico Nacional in Madrid, within Inquisition section; its great importance is due to the fact that it is one of the few remaining manuscritos de imprenta, i.e., the manuscript in which the printed edition was based on. Finally, this article also presents the different locations of poems both within the codex and the printed issues of Várias obras, along with the critical edition of two unpublished sonnets in Spanish found within Días’ manuscript

Modelling the fate and serogroup variability of persistent Listeria monocytogenes strains on grated cheese at different storage temperatures

Processed cheese from cow's milk is one of the most consumed dairy products worldwide. Since this product is defined as ready-to-eat, foodborne pathogens such as Listeria monocytogenes can represent a health concern for susceptible populations. In this study, the individual and combined kinetic behaviour of four L. monocytogenes serogroups (namely, 1/2a, 1/2b, 1/2c and 4b) persistently isolated from a Spanish cheesemaking factory was modelled on grated cheese at different isothermal conditions (4 and 12 °C) during a 120-days period. The serogroup variability was characterized over the storage time by the isolation and identification of the different serogroups in the cocktail containing the four strains. This processed cheese did not support the growth of L. monocytogenes during storage. Survival patterns described by the log-linear type model indicated a high variability of L. monocytogenes serotypes at the tested temperatures: L. monocytogenes serogroup 4b showed a more rapid decrease rate at 4 °C than at 12 °C, while the opposite trend was found for the rest of serogroups and the L. monocytogenes cocktail containing all the strains. Survival rate of L. monocytogenes serogroup 1/2c at 4 °C was 0.007 log CFU/d being the most resistant serotype while at 12 °C, serogroup 1/2a showed the lowest survival rate (0.011 log CFU/d), thus showing a prolonged survival at this temperature. This study highlights the potential implications of L. monocytogenes contamination in processed cheese and shows that serogroup variability should be considered when evaluating survival patterns in contaminated products. Finally, the predictive models developed here could be useful to assist food operators to set specific storage conditions and formulations to avoid L. monocytogenes growth and survival in grated cheeses.European Union (EU) funded Integrated Project PROMISE (project number 265877; 7th Framework Programme

Challenges and Founding Pillars for a Manufacturing Platform to Support Value Networks Operating in a Circular Economy Framework

This research received no external funding. Publisher Copyright: © 2022 by the authors. Licensee MDPI, Basel, Switzerland.Circularity is clearly a competitive advantage and a market opportunity for European industries. From this perspective, while digitalization is largely recognized as an accelerator and an enabler of Circular Economy, the fact that European industry is strong but fragmented (highly special-ized medium-and small-sized companies have different needs and different tools) naturally results in the proliferation of commercial platforms for digitalized manufacturing. If such fragmentation is not properly addressed, it will eventually become a threat to European competitiveness. Despite some examples, value networks still do not operate in a seamless, transparent, and effective way. This paper addresses the challenges and the resulting technical funding pillars for an IDS (International Data Space) manufacturing platform meant to empower a fully digital circular thread of products and services.publishersversionpublishe

Cystic fibrosis with liver involvement in adults has a benign course. Results from a tertiary referral center cohort

Cystic fibrosis liver disease is a poorly understood entity, especially in adults, in terms of its real prevalence, natural history and diagnostic criteria, despite being the most important extrapulmonary cause of mortality. The aim was to evaluate the prevalence, characteristics and potential risk factors of liver disease in adults with cystic fibrosis, according to two diagnostic criteria accepted in the scientific literature. Patients were recruited in a tertiary referral hospital, and laboratory, ultrasound, non-invasive liver fibrosis tests (AST to Platelet Ratio Index [APRI]; Fibrosis-4 Index [FIB4]) and transient elastography (Fibroscan®) were performed. The proportion of patients with liver disease according to the Debray and Koh criteria were evaluated. ninety-five patients were included, 48 (50.5 %) females, with a mean age of 30.4 (28.6-32.2) years. According to the Debray criteria, six (6.3 %) patients presented liver disease. According to the Koh criteria, prevalence increased up to 8.4 %, being statistically different from the 25 % value described in other published series (p = 0.005). Seven (7.5 %) presented ultrasonographic chronic liver disease. Eleven (13 %) presented liver fibrosis according to the APRI score; 95 (100 %) had a normal FIB-4 value. Mean liver stiffness value was 4.4 (4.1-4.7) kPa. FEV1 (OR = 0.16, p 0.05), meconium ileus (OR = 14.16, p 0.002), platelets (Pearson coefficient -0.25, p 0.05) and younger age (Pearson coefficient -0.19, p 0.05) were risk factors. prevalence and severity of liver disease in adult cystic fibrosis patients were lower than expected. Meconium ileus, platelets, age and respiratory function were confirmed as risk factors associated to cystic fibrosis liver diseas
