Interaction of vortices in superconductors with kappa close to 2^(-1/2)
Using a perturbative approach to the infinitely degenerate Bogomolnyi vortex
state for a superconductor with kappa = 2^(-1/2), T -> T_c, we calculate the
interaction of vortices in a superconductor with kappa close to 2^(-1/2). We
find, numerically and analytically, that depending on the material the
interaction potential between the vortices varies with decreasing kappa from
purely repulsive (as in a type-II superconductor) to purely attractive (as in a
type-I superconductor) in two different ways: either vortices form a bound
state and the distance between them changes gradually from infinity to zero, or
this transition occurs in a discontinuous way as a result of a competition
between minima at infinity and zero. We study the discontinuous transition
between the vortex and Meissner states caused by the non-monotonous vortex

Off-diagonal quark distribution functions of the pion within an effective single instanton approximation
We develop a relativistic quark model for pion structure, which incorporates
the non-trivial structure of the vacuum of Quantum Chromodynamics as modelled
by instantons. Pions are boundstates of quarks and the strong quark-pion vertex
is determined from an instanton induced effective lagrangian. The interaction
of the constituents of the pion with the external electromagnetic field is
introduced in gauge invariant form. The parameters of the model, i.e.,
effective instanton radius and constituent quark masses, are obtained from the
vacuum expectation values of the lowest dimensional quark and gluon operators
and the low-energy observables of the pion. We apply the formalism to the
calculation of the pion form factor by means of the isovector nonforward parton

The Zero-Removing Property and Lagrange-Type Interpolation Series
The classical Kramer sampling theorem, which provides a method for obtaining orthogonal sampling formulas, can be formulated in a more general nonorthogonal setting. In this setting, a challenging problem is to characterize the situations when the obtained nonorthogonal sampling formulas can be expressed as Lagrange-type interpolation series. In this article a necessary and sufficient condition is given in terms of the zero removing property. Roughly speaking, this property concerns the stability of the sampled functions on removing a finite number of their zeros
Brane World Susy Breaking from String/M Theory
String and M-theory realizations of brane world supersymmetry breaking
scenarios are considered in which visible sector Standard Model fields are
confined on a brane, with hidden sector supersymmetry breaking isolated on a
distant brane. In calculable examples with an internal manifold of any volume
the Kahler potential generically contains brane--brane non-derivative contact
interactions coupling the visible and hidden sectors and is not of the no-scale
sequestered form. This leads to non-universal scalar masses and without
additional assumptions about flavor symmetries may in general induce dangerous
sflavor violation even though the Standard Model and supersymmetry branes are
physically separated. Deviations from the sequestered form are dictated by bulk
supersymmetry and can in most cases be understood as arising from exchange of
bulk supergravity fields between branes or warping of the internal geometry.
Unacceptable visible sector tree-level tachyons arise in many models but may be
avoided in certain classes of compactifications. Anomaly mediated and gaugino
mediated contributions to scalar masses are sub-dominant except in special
circumstances such as a flat or AdS pure five--dimensional bulk geometry

Microstructural Shear Localization in Plastic Deformation of Amorphous Solids
The shear-transformation-zone (STZ) theory of plastic deformation predicts
that sufficiently soft, non-crystalline solids are linearly unstable against
forming periodic arrays of microstructural shear bands. A limited nonlinear
analysis indicates that this instability may be the mechanism responsible for
strain softening in both constant-stress and constant-strain-rate experiments.
The analysis presented here pertains only to one-dimensional banding patterns
in two-dimensional systems, and only to very low temperatures. It uses the
rudimentary form of the STZ theory in which there is only a single kind of zone
rather than a distribution of them with a range of transformation rates.
Nevertheless, the results are in qualitative agreement with essential features
of the available experimental data. The nonlinear theory also implies that
harder materials, which do not undergo a microstructural instability, may form
isolated shear bands in weak regions or, perhaps, at points of concentrated

To inform the evaluation of the Nature Pact (Natuurpact) and the Assessment of the Dutch Human Environment (Balans van de Leefomgeving), PBL Netherlands Environmental Assessment Agency needs a quantitative measure of the size and scope of green citizens’ initiatives and their impact. The need for this information reflects the ambition of many government authorities to bring the wider community, including individuals, into closer contact with nature and involve them more in nature policy. This report describes the results of a baseline assessment and pilot study to test the newly developed methodology for monitoring green citizens’ initiatives. Besides the results, the report includes several analyses based on the data and presents the main findings
Observing Direct CP Violation in Untagged B-Meson Decays
Direct CP violation can exist in untagged B-meson decays to self-conjugate,
three-particle final states; it would be realized as a population asymmetry in
the untagged decay rate across the mirror line of the Dalitz plot of the
three-body decay. We explore the numerical size of this direct CP-violating
effect in a variety of B-meson decays to three pseudoscalar mesons; we show
that the resulting asymmetry is comparable to the partial rate asymmetry in the
analogous tagged decays, making the search for direct CP violation in the

Comparing future patterns of energy system change in 2°C scenarios with historically observed rates of change
This paper systematically compares modeled rates of change provided by global integrated assessment models aiming for the 2 °C objective to historically observed rates of change. Such a comparison can provide insights into the difficulty of achieving such stringent climate stabilization scenarios. The analysis focuses specifically on the rates of change for technology expansion and diffusion, emissions and energy supply investments. The associated indicators vary in terms of system focus (technology-specific or energy system wide), temporal scale (timescale or lifetime), spatial scale (regional or global) and normalization (accounting for entire system growth or not). Although none of the indicators provide conclusive insights as to the achievability of scenarios, this study finds that indicators that look into absolute change remain within the range of historical growth frontiers for the next decade, but increase to unprecedented levels before mid-century. Indicators that take into account or normalize for overall system growth find future change to be broadly within historical ranges. This is particularly the case for monetary-based normalization metrics like GDP compared to energy-based normalization metrics like primary energy. By applying a diverse set of indicators alternative, complementary insights into how scenarios compare with historical observations are acquired but they do not provide further insights on the possibility of achieving rates of change that are beyond current day practice
Determining the Phases alpha and gamma from Direct CP Violation in B_u, B_d and B_s Decays to Two Vectors
A method for clean determination of the unitarity angles alpha and gamma is
proposed that uses only direct CP violation and does not require any time
dependent measurements. The method takes advantage of helicity amplitudes for
B_u, B_d and B_s decay to two vector mesons and can be used, at any B-facility,
in conjunction with a large number of modes. It also allows for experimental
