    Exact solution and surface critical behaviour of open cyclic SOS lattice models

    We consider the LL-state cyclic solid-on-solid lattice models under a class of open boundary conditions. The integrable boundary face weights are obtained by solving the reflection equations. Functional relations for the fused transfer matrices are presented for both periodic and open boundary conditions. The eigen-spectra of the unfused transfer matrix is obtained from the functional relations using the analytic Bethe ansatz. For a special case of crossing parameter λ=π/L\lambda=\pi/L, the finite-size corrections to the eigen-spectra of the critical models are obtained, from which the corresponding conformal dimensions follow. The calculation of the surface free energy away from criticality yields two surface specific heat exponents, αs=2L/2\alpha_s=2-L/2\ell and α1=1L/\alpha_1=1-L/\ell, where =1,2,,L1\ell=1,2,\cdots,L-1 coprime to LL. These results are in agreement with the scaling relations αs=αb+ν\alpha_s=\alpha_b+\nu and α1=αb1\alpha_1=\alpha_b-1.Comment: 13 pages, LaTeX, to appear in J. Phys.

    Turbulent boundary layers and channels at moderate Reynolds numbers

    The behaviour of the velocity and pressure fluctuations in the outer layers of wall-bounded turbulent flows is analysed by comparing a new simulation of the zero-pressure-gradient boundary layer with older simulations of channels. The 99 % boundary-layer thickness is used as a reasonable analogue of the channel half-width, but the two flows are found to be too different for the analogy to be complete. In agreement with previous results, it is found that the fluctuations of the transverse velocities and of the pressure are stronger in the boundary layer, and this is traced to the pressure fluctuations induced in the outer intermittent layer by the differences between the potential and rotational flow regions. The same effect is also shown to be responsible for the stronger wake component of the mean velocity profile in external flows, whose increased energy production is the ultimate reason for the stronger fluctuations. Contrary to some previous results by our group, and by others, the streamwise velocity fluctuations are also found to be higher in boundary layers, although the effect is weaker. Within the limitations of the non-parallel nature of the boundary layer, the wall-parallel scales of all the fluctuations are similar in both the flows, suggesting that the scale-selection mechanism resides just below the intermittent region, y/¿=0.3¿0.5. This is also the location of the largest differences in the intensities, although the limited Reynolds number of the boundary-layer simulation (Re¿ ¿ 2000) prevents firm conclusions on the scaling of this location.     We investigate the possible regular solutions of the boundary Yang-Baxter equation for the vertex models associated with the Cn(1)C_{n}^{(1)}, Dn(1)D_{n}^{(1)} and A2n1(2)A_{2n-1}^{(2)} affine Lie algebras.     Inkjet printed paper based frequency selective surfaces and skin mounted RFID tags: the interrelation between silver nanoparticle ink, paper substrate and low temperature sintering technique

    Inkjet printing of functional frequency selective surfaces (FSS) and radio frequency identification (RFID) tags on commercial paper substrates using silver nanoparticle inks sintered using low temperature thermal, plasma and photonic techniques is reported. Printed and sintered FSS devices demonstrate performances which achieve wireless communication requirements having a forward transmission scattering parameter, S21, depth greater than ?20 dB at 13 GHz. Printed and plasma sintered RFID tags on transfer paper, which are capable of being mounted on skin, improved read distances compared to previously reported single layer transfer RFID tags fabricated by conventional thermal sintering

    Survey and online discussion groups to develop a patient-rated outcome measure on acceptability of treatment response in vitiligo

    BackgroundVitiligo is a chronic depigmenting skin disorder which affects around 0.5-1% of the world’s population. The outcome measures used most commonly in trials to judge treatment success focus on repigmentation. Patient-reported outcome measures of treatment success are rarely used, although recommendations have been made for their inclusion in vitiligo trials. This study aimed to evaluate the face validity of a new patient-reported outcome measure of treatment response, for use in future trials and clinical practice. MethodAn online survey to gather initial views on what constitutes treatment success for people with vitiligo or their parents/carers, followed by online discussion groups with patients to reach consensus on what constitutes treatment success for individuals with vitiligo, and how this can be assessed in the context of trials. Participants were recruited from an existing database of vitiligo patients and through posts on the social network sites Facebook and Twitter. ResultsA total of 202 survey responses were received, of which 37 were excluded and 165 analysed. Three main themes emerged as important in assessing treatment response: a) the match between vitiligo and normal skin (how well it blends in); b) how noticeable the vitiligo is and c) a reduction in the size of the white patches. The majority of respondents said they would consider 80% or more repigmentation to be a worthwhile treatment response after 9 months of treatment. Three online discussion groups involving 12 participants led to consensus that treatment success is best measured by asking patients how noticeable their vitiligo is after treatment. This was judged to be best answered using a 5-point Likert scale, on which a score of 4 or 5 represents treatment success. ConclusionsThis study represents the first step in developing a patient reported measure of treatment success in vitiligo trials. Further work is now needed to assess its construct validity and responsiveness to change.<br/

    Direct Numerical Simulation of turbulent Taylor-Couette flow

    The direct numerical simulation (DNS) of the Taylor--Couette flow in the fully turbulent regime is described. The numerical method extends the work by Quadrio & Luchini (Eur. J. Mech. B / Fluids, v.21, pp.413--427, 2002), and is based on a parallel computer code which uses mixed spatial discretization (spectral schemes in the homogeneous directions, and fourth-order, compact explicit finite-difference schemes in the radial direction). A DNS is carried out to simulate for the first time the turbulent Taylor--Couette flow in the turbulent regime. Statistical quantities are computed to complement the existing experimental information, with a view to compare it to planar, pressure-driven turbulent flow at the same value of the Reynolds number. The main source for differences in flow statistics between plane and curved-wall flows is attributed to the presence of large-scale rotating structures generated by curvature effects.Comment: To appear in European Journal of Mechanics B / Fluid

    Impact of magnetic fields on ram pressure stripping in disk galaxies

    (abridged) Ram pressure can remove significant amounts of gas from galaxies in clusters, and thus has a large impact on the evolution of cluster galaxies. Recent observations have shown that key properties of ram pressure stripped tails of galaxies are in conflict with predictions by simulations. To increase the realism of existing simulations, we simulated for the first time a disk galaxy exposed to a uniformly magnetized wind including radiative cooling and self-gravity of the gas. We find that B-fields have a strong effect on the morphology of the gas in the tail of the galaxy. While in the pure hydro case the tail is very clumpy, the MHD case shows very filamentary structures in the tail. The filaments can be strongly supported by magnetic pressure and, when this is the case, the B-field vectors tend to be aligned with the filaments. The ram pressure stripping may lead to the formation of magnetized density tails that appear as bifurcated in the plane of the sky and resemble the double tails observed in ESO 137-001 and ESO 137-002. Such tails can be formed under a variety of situations, both for the disks oriented face-on with respect to the ICM wind and for the tilted ones. While this bifurcation is due to the generic tendency for the B-fields to produce very filamentary tail morphology, the tail properties are further shaped by the combination of the B-field orientation and the sliding of the field past the disk surface exposed to the wind. Magnetic draping does not strongly change the rate of gas stripping. For a face-on galaxy, the field tends to reduce the amount of stripping compared to the pure hydro case, and is associated with the formation of a magnetic draping layer on the side of the galaxy exposed to the ICM wind. For significantly tilted disks, the stripping rate may be enhanced by the ``scraping'' of the disk surface by the B-fields sliding past the ISM/ICM interface.Comment: ApJ in press. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:0909.3097 by other author

    Discussions on Driven Cavity Flow

    The widely studied benchmark problem, 2-D driven cavity flow problem is discussed in details in terms of physical and mathematical and also numerical aspects. A very brief literature survey on studies on the driven cavity flow is given. Based on the several numerical and experimental studies, the fact of the matter is, above moderate Reynolds numbers physically the flow in a driven cavity is not two-dimensional. However there exist numerical solutions for 2-D driven cavity flow at high Reynolds numbers
