Estimates of the Surface Magnetic Field Strength of Radio Pulsars
We investigate the geometry of the magnetic field of rotation-powered
pulsars. A new method for calculating an angle () between the spin and
magnetic dipole axes of a neutron star (NS) in the ejector stage is considered
within the frame of the magnetic dipole energy loss mechanism. We estimate the
surface magnetic field strength () for a population of known
neutron stars in the radio pulsar (ejector) stage. The evaluated may differ by an order of magnitude from the values without
considering the angle . It is shown that lies in the
range -- for a known population of short and middle
periodic radio pulsars.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figures, 5 tables, 29 references. Published in Universe

Catalog of the Galactic population of X-ray pulsars in High-mass X-ray binary systems
A catalog of the Galactic population of X-ray pulsars in high-mass X-ray
binary (HMXB) systems is presented. It contains information about 82 confirmed
sources: 18 persistent and 64 transient pulsars. Their basic parameters include
spin period, spin evolution with global and local spin-up/spin-down and
duration, orbital period, X-ray luminosity, magnetic field strength measured by
cyclotron line analysis, distance, spectral and luminosity class, observable
parameters of massive companions, which are shown in the tables provided, with
corresponding references. Candidates of the HMXB pulsars are also listed for
further careful consideration.Comment: 35 pages, 5 figures, 3 tables. Accepted for publication in ApJ

MINLP formulations for continuous piecewise linear function fitting
We consider a nonconvex mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model proposed by Goldberg et al. (Comput Optim Appl 58:523–541, 2014. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10589-014-9647-y) for piecewise linear function fitting. We show that this MINLP model is incomplete and can result in a piecewise linear curve that is not the graph of a function, because it misses a set of necessary constraints. We provide two counterexamples to illustrate this effect, and propose three alternative models that correct this behavior. We investigate the theoretical relationship between these models and evaluate their computational performance

The approach has been proposed to form automated technology in order to actively monitor the transportation of dangerous goods by railroad. The reported approach to the dynamic description of trains' status has been developed on the basis of modifying the language of trains' status in the form of abstract modeling of operational processes. This will ensure the fastest implementation of decision-making algorithms by the operational personnel at the powerful support from the automated complex of dispatching control. It has been determined that the maximum effect of the implementation of the proposed approach could be obtained by synthesizing it with a system of active monitoring of moving units' traffic.Modeling an arbitrary case involving a train, which can occur in real operational circumstances, has made it possible to predict the violation of a normative train schedule and to simulate the cognitive process of decision-making by a train dispatcher to rationally resolve a complicated train situation under changing operational conditions while accounting for a significant number of factors. Modifying the language of train-related cases could adequately produce the spatial-time description of train situations along a simulated section, whereby it is the closest to the language of the dispatching personnel. The advantages of the proposed approach are that it makes it possible to form a database and a knowledge base as quickly as possible in order to form a working model of the system of dispatching control. A given system has been developed on the basis of the imitation of the cognitive activity of the human operator, thereby providing an opportunity to deepen the implementation of artificial intelligence systems on railroads. These innovations could help achieve the maximum level of safety in the transportation of dangerous goods while simultaneously and unconditionally reducing operating costs and gaining higher profits.Предложен подход для формирования автоматизированной технологии активного мониторинга за перевозками опасных грузов железнодорожным транспортом. Evaluation of water properties in HEA–HEMA hydrogels swollen in aqueous-PEG solutions using thermoanalytical techniques
Hydrogels are polymeric materials used in many pharmaceutical and biomedical applications due to their ability to form 3D hydrophilic polymeric networks, which can absorb large amounts of water. In the present work, polyethylene glycols (PEG) were introduced into the hydrogel liquid phase in order to improve the mechanical properties of hydrogels composed of 2-hydroxyethylacrylate and 2-hydroxyethylmethacrylate (HEA–HEMA) synthesized with different co-monomer compositions and equilibrated in water or in 20 % water–PEG 400 and 600 solutions. The thermoanalytical techniques [differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetry (TG)] were used to evaluate the amount and properties of free and bound water in HEA–HEMA hydrogels. The internal structure and the mechanical properties of hydrogels were studied using scanning electron microscopy and friability assay. TG “loss-on-drying” experiments were applied to study the water-retention properties of hydrogels, whereas the combination of TG and DSC allowed estimating the total amount of freezable and non-freezing water in hydrogels. The results show that the addition of viscous co-solvent (PEG) to the liquid medium results in significant improvement of the mechanical properties of HEA–HEMA hydrogels and also slightly retards the water loss from the hydrogels. A redistribution of free and bound water in the hydrogels equilibrated in mixed solutions containing 20 vol% of PEGs takes place
Beyond structural models for the mode of action:How natural antimicrobial peptides affect lipid transport
Hypothesis: Most textbook models for antimicrobial peptides (AMP) mode of action are focused on structural effects and pore formation in lipid membranes, while these deformations have been shown to require high concentrations of peptide bound to the membrane. Even insertion of low amounts of peptides in the membrane is hypothesized to affect the transmembrane transport of lipids, which may play a key role in the peptide effect on membranes. Experiments: Here we combine state-of-the-art small angle X-ray/neutron scattering (SAXS/SANS) techniques to systematically study the effect of a broad selection of natural AMPs on lipid membranes. Our approach enables us to relate the structural interactions, effects on lipid exchange processes, and thermodynamic parameters, directly in the same model system. Findings: The studied peptides, indolicidin, aurein 1.2, magainin II, cecropin A and LL-37 all cause a general acceleration of essential lipid transport processes, without necessarily altering the overall structure of the lipid membranes or creating organized pore-like structures. We observe rapid scrambling of the lipid composition associated with enhanced lipid transport which may trigger lethal signaling processes and enhance ion transport. The reported membrane effects provide a plausible canonical mechanism of AMP-membrane interaction and can reconcile many of the previously observed effects of AMPs on bacterial membranes

Advances in intravesical drug delivery systems to treat bladder cancer
Chemotherapeutic agents administered intravesically to treat bladder cancer have limited efficacy due to periodic dilution and wash-out during urine formation and elimination. This review describes the pathophysiology, prevalence and staging of bladder cancer, and discusses several formulation strategies used to improve drug residence within the bladder. These include the use of amphiphilic copolymers, mucoadhesive formulations, hydrogels, floating systems, and liposomes. Various in vitro and in vivo models recently employed for intravesical drug delivery studies are discussed. Some of the challenges that have prevented the clinical use of some promising formulations are identified
