Contamination of Runoff Water at Gdańsk Airport (Poland) by Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs)
Airport runoff can contain high concentrations of various pollutants, in particular polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), the environmental levels of which have to be monitored. Airport runoff water samples, collected at the Gdańsk-Rębiechowo Airport from 2008 to 2009, were analysed for PAHs and PCBs by gas chromatography. The aromatic fractions were separated by liquid-liquid extraction and analysed by GC/MS. Total PAH concentrations were 295–6,758 ng/L in 2008 and 180–1,924 ng/L in 2009, while total PCB levels in 2008 ranged from 0.14 to 0.44 μg/L and in 2009 from 0.06 to 0.23 μg/L. The PAH and PCB compositions in airport runoff waters were examined over a range of spatial and temporal scales to determine distributions, trends and possible sources. This pollution is mainly pyrolytic and related to anthropogenic activity. There were significant differences between the samples collected in the two seasons. An understanding of the magnitude of contamination due to airport runoff water is important for the effective management of airport infrastructure
Proteomics of Buccal Cavity Mucus in Female Tilapia Fish (Oreochromis spp.): A Comparison between Parental and Non-Parental Fish
Mouthbrooding is an elaborate form of parental care displayed by many teleost
species. While the direct benefits of mouthbrooding such as protection and
transportation of offsprings are known, it is unclear if mouthbrooding offers
additional benefits to embryos during incubation. In addition, mouthbrooding
could incur negative costs on parental fish, due to limited feeding
opportunities. Parental tilapia fish (Oreochromis spp.) display
an elaborated form of parental care by incubating newly hatched embryos in oral
buccal cavity until the complete adsorption of yolk sac. In order to understand
the functional aspects of mouthbrooding, we undertake a proteomics approach to
compare oral mucus sampled from mouthbrooders and non-mouthbrooders,
respectively. Majority of the identified proteins have also been previously
identified in other biological fluids or mucus-rich organs in different
organisms. We also showed the upregulation of 22 proteins and down regulation of
3 proteins in mucus collected from mouthbrooders. Anterior gradient protein,
hemoglobin beta-A chain and alpha-2 globin levels were lower in mouthbrooder
samples. Mouthbrooder oral mucus collectively showed increase levels of proteins
related to cytoskeletal properties, glycolytic pathway and mediation of
oxidative stress. Overall the findings suggest cellular stress response,
probably to support production of mucus during mouthbrooding phase

This study evaluated pollution levels in water and sediments of Península de Paraguaná and related these levels with benthic macrofauna along a coastal area where the largest Venezuelan oil refineries have operated over the past 60 years. For this, the concentration of heavy metals, of hydrocarbon compounds and the community structure of the macrobenthos were examined at 20 sites distributed along 40 km of coastline for six consecutive years, which included windy and calm seasons. The spatial variability of organic and inorganic compounds showed considerably high coastal pollution along the study area, across both years and seasons. The southern sites, closest to the refineries, had consistently higher concentrations of heavy metals and organic compounds in water and sediments when compared to those in the north. The benthic community was dominated by polychaetes at all sites, seasons and years, and their abundance and distribution were significantly correlated with physical and chemical characteristics of the sediments. Sites close to the oil refineries were consistently dominated by families known to tolerate xenobiotics, such as Capitellidae and Spionidae. The results from this study highlight the importance of continuing long-term environmental monitoring programs to assess the impact of effluent discharge and spill events from the oil refineries that operate in the western coast of Paraguaná, Venezuela
