Perceptions of Female Veterans Regarding Mental Health Services in the Veterans Administration System

    Get PDF
Over the past 2 decades, women’s roles in the United States military have changed which has increased their risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder. In 2016, all military occupational specialty were opened to women which allowed women to fight and be exposed to a combat environment. As more female veterans are returning home and reintegrating into their communities, they are seeking care for combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder and combat exposure. The purpose of this generic qualitative study was to understand the female veterans’ perception of the utilization of the Veterans Health Administration when seeking care for combat-related post-traumatic stress disorder and combat exposure. This study was guided by feminist theory which asserts that women have the same rights has men, but inequality still exists as was the case when women veterans sought health care for mental health concerns within the Veterans Health Administration. The research question focused on the female veterans’ perception on their use of the Veterans Health Administration. Utilizing in-depth semi structured interviews conducted using video conferencing, data were collected from 14 female veterans. Using thematic analysis, three themes emerged: (a) negative experiences, (b) emotional experiences, and (c) ambivalent attitude. These three themes combing to form the overall finding that female veterans were dissatisfied with care for the issues of PTSD and combat exposure. The findings could result in positive social change when used to advocate for enhanced attention to mental well-being and efficient and effective services within the Veterans Administration to address mental health

A Efficacious Theoretical Perspective of Rural Female School Superintendents\u27 Self-Sustainability

    Get PDF
The landscape of the rural superintendancy is in the midst of a leadership turnover as a significant number of its current administrators reach retirement age. Discussions in the literature have delineated the characteristics of successful rural superintendents and the barriers that threaten their achievement. It lacks, however, adequate discussion of how women have aspired to and sustained success in rural superintendencies. The qualitative case study presented in this report includes the narratives of five novice, rural, and female superintendents. An efficacious theoretical framework was identified as the lens through which the accounts could best be analyzed and discussed, including proposed implications for additional research to further explore this framework and the academy’s preparation of rural female superintendents

Using Beatboxing for Creative Rehabilitation After Laryngectomy:Experiences From a Public Engagement Project

    Get PDF
Laryngectomy is the surgical removal of the larynx (voice box), usually performed in patients with advanced stages of throat cancer. The psychosocial impact of losing the voice is significant, affecting a person’s professional and social life in a devastating way, and a proportion of this patient group subsequently must overcome depression (22–30%) and social isolation (40%). The profound changes to anatomical structures involved in voicing and articulation, as a result of surgery, radiotherapy or chemotherapy (separately or in combination with one another), introduce challenges faced in speech rehabilitation and voice production that complicate social reintegration and quality of life. After laryngectomy, breathing, voicing, articulation and tongue movement are major components in restoring communication. Regular exercise of the chest, neck and oropharyngeal muscles, in particular, is important in controlling these components and keeping the involved structures supple. It is, however, a difficult task for a speech therapist to keep the patient engaged and motivated to practice these exercises. We have adopted a multidisciplinary approach to explore the use of basic beatboxing techniques to create a wide variety of exercises that are seen as fun and interactive and that maximize the use of the structures important in alaryngeal phonation. We herein report on our empirical work in developing patients’ skills, particularly relating to voiced and unvoiced consonants to improve intelligibility. In collaboration with a professional beatboxing performer, we produced instructional online video materials to support patients working on their own and/or with support from speech therapists. Although the present paper is focused predominantly on introducing the structure of the conducted workshops, the rationale for their design and the final public engagement performance, we also include feedback from participants to commence the critical discourse about whether this type of activity could lead to systematic underlying research and robustly assessed interventions in the future. Based on this exploratory work, we conclude that the innovative approach that we employed was found to be engaging, useful, informative and motivating. We conclude by offering our views regarding the limitations of our work and the implications for future empirical research

Synthesis of N-Substituted phosphoramidic acid esters as “reverse” fosmidomycin analogues

    Get PDF
An efficient synthetic pathway to a series of novel “reverse” fosmidomycin analogues has been developed, commencing from substituted benzylamines. In these analogues, the fosmidomycin hydroxamate moiety is reversed and the tetrahedral methylene carbon adjacent to the phosphonate moiety is replaced by a nitrogen atom bearing different benzyl groups. The resulting phosphonate esters were designed as potential antimalarial “pro-drugs”
