[Review of] Paul G. Zolbrod. Dine Bahane\u27 : The Navajo Creation Story

Paul G. Zolbrod\u27s Dine Bahane\u27: The Navajo Creation Story is a revision of Washington Matthews\u27 The Navaho Origin Legend published in Navaho Legends (Boston: American Folklore Society) in 1897. Zolbrod justly describes Matthews\u27 version of this narative [narrative] as one of the world\u27s significant literary works, and his rewriting of it makes it accessible as never before to English speaking readers. The narrative is essentially sacred in nature, dealing with the emergence of precursors to human beings through successive primal worlds and with male and female deities who must achieve harmony, peace, and balance between themselves and throughout the world before the Navajo people can be created to live on this earth

[Review of] Gary Clayton Anderson. Little Crow: Spokesman for the Sioux

    Get PDF
As Gary Anderson notes in the introduction to his recent history of the life of the Dakota Sioux leader Little Crow, writing Native American biography is a difficult undertaking. Because of the scarcity of direct source material about major portions of the life and thought of their subjects, historians have generally attempted full-scale biographies of only a few such widely-known men as Crazy Horse and Sitting Bull. Yet, the value of individual biography in humanizing history, dispelling mass cultural stereotypes, and elucidating interethnic relations is so great that Anderson\u27s solid, well-researched, and readable life of Little Crow is indeed welcome

    Beyond Greenspan

With the economy dominating today’s headlines and conversations it is hard to remember that we were preoccupied with economic events during the last decade, too. The 1990s were mostly a time of tremendous growth and innovation, but they were not without their own trials and crises. In fact, the conventional wisdom was that only one man truly understood what was happening, and he was leading the economy to prosperity amidst the perils of capitalism. Alan Greenspan was a rock star to the political and financial establishments of his time

Review of \u3ci\u3eGreengrass Pipe Dancers\u3c/i\u3e By Lionel Little Eagle

Greengrass Pipe Dancers is an account of Little Eagle\u27s trips in 1988 and 1990 to Lakota communities in South Dakota, notably Greengrass on the Cheyenne River Reservation, on a quest for counsel about an old Oglala pipe bag that had come into his possession, for physical healing for his sick wife, and for his own emotional and spiritual healing following her death. During these brief visits, the author, who claims European and Micmac ancestry, meets several well-known Lakota religious leaders and elders; attends ceremonies including pipe ceremonies, inipis, a yuwipi, and a sun dance; and experiences visions. Little Eagle states in his introduction that he writes with absolutely no authority about the Lakota traditions he describes and that although Greengrass Pipe Dancers is true he does not claim that it is completely factual Readers would be well advised to keep both of these points in mind in accessing the portrait of Lakota life and spirituality shown in the book and the claim on the back cover that Crazy Horse\u27s pipe bag is the inspiration for this true story. The author presents no substantial evidence to support the supposition that his pipe bag once belonged to Crazy Horse. More disturbing is Little Eagle\u27s attribution of long quotations to Lakota spiritual leaders and elders based on memories of his visits and only occasionally backed up with notes taken at the time. He states repeatedly that he humbly respects these people, but is it humble or respectful to put words into their mouths for which they may be held responsible by unwary readers? Of his reconstructed quotations, the author writes that Good stories are like good recipes: sometimes you will add a few more grains of sugar, or substitute 2% milk for whole milk, or leave out a part all together. The bottom line is what comes out and how it tastes. I question both the accuracy of the conversations Little Eagle records and how closely his curiously new-age visions of his wife, Crazy Horse, and other figures resemble traditional Lakota spiritual experience. By his own account, Little Eagle\u27s views have been influenced by the Baha\u27i convictions of his late father-in-law Vinson Brown, who founded Naturegraph Publishers and published such works as Warriors of the Rainbow: Strange and Prophetic Dreams of the Indian Peoples (1962). Readers would do better, I think, to learn about Lakota spirituality from Lakotas who themselves have had long experience with their traditions. More authoritative works include Standing in the Light: A Lakota Way of Seeing by Severt Young Bear and R. D. Theisz (1994) and Ronald Goodman\u27s Lakota Star Knowledge: Studies in Lakota Stellar Theology (1992)

[Review of] Eduardo Galeano. Memory of Fire: Genesis

The first volume of a trilogy by the Uruguayan writer Eduardo Galeano, Memory of Fire: Genesis has been called remarkable, fascinating, vivid, passionate, angry, celebratory, and triumphant. It could also be called a history of Latin America to 1700, though that gives little sense of its style or scope. In his introduction, the author describes himself as not a historian, but as a writer who would like to contribute to the kidnapped memory of all America, but above all of Latin America, that despised and beloved land. To do this he has created a great mosaic of stories, most of them less than a page long

Constrained to Deviate: John Wesley and the Evangelical Anglicans

Although the dominant theory in Evangelical and Methodist studies has been that John Wesley and the Evangelical Anglican clergy separated over theological issues related to Christian perfection and predestination, essentially outlined as an Arminian/Calvinist split, it is the argument of this work that the gradual split between these two "parties" was much more multifaceted. Looking at the broader political, social, and religious context in which the Evangelical Revival arose, the divide between Wesley and the Evangelicals can be seen as much as an outgrowth of ecclesiastical pressures caused by maverick use of church polity, political memory in the wake of the English Civil War and the Restoration, the creation of a distinctly "Methodist" ethos, and even the rise of High Church and Tory political power in the latter part of the eighteenth century in the face of outside challenges. These larger influences, together with personal issues among what amounts to a small group of men, created the impetus for a divide between these two parties. While theological issues remain essential to the overall picture, they are treated within larger historical contexts. Wesley’s divide from his closest Anglican associates remains a complex issue within the tumultuous early period of the Evangelical Revival
