Tactile Estimation of Extrinsic Contact Patch for Stable Placement

Precise perception of contact interactions is essential for the fine-grained manipulation skills for robots. In this paper, we present the design of feedback skills for robots that must learn to stack complex-shaped objects on top of each other. To design such a system, a robot should be able to reason about the stability of placement from very gentle contact interactions. Our results demonstrate that it is possible to infer the stability of object placement based on tactile readings during contact formation between the object and its environment. In particular, we estimate the contact patch between a grasped object and its environment using force and tactile observations to estimate the stability of the object during a contact formation. The contact patch could be used to estimate the stability of the object upon the release of the grasp. The proposed method is demonstrated on various pairs of objects that are used in a very popular board game.Comment: Under submissio

Silencing Nociceptor Neurons Reduces Allergic Airway Inflammation

Lung nociceptors initiate cough and bronchoconstriction. To elucidate if these fibers also contribute to allergic airway inflammation, we stimulated lung nociceptors with capsaicin and observed increased neuropeptide release and immune cell infiltration. In contrast, ablating Nav1.8(+) sensory neurons or silencing them with QX-314, a charged sodium channel inhibitor that enters via large-pore ion channels to specifically block nociceptors, substantially reduced ovalbumin- or house-dust-mite-induced airway inflammation and bronchial hyperresponsiveness. We also discovered that IL-5, a cytokine produced by activated immune cells, acts directly on nociceptors to induce the release of vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP). VIP then stimulates CD4(+) and resident innate lymphoid type 2 cells, creating an inflammatory signaling loop that promotes allergic inflammation. Our results indicate that nociceptors amplify pathological adaptive immune responses and that silencing these neurons with QX-314 interrupts this neuro-immune interplay, revealing a potential new therapeutic strategy for asthma

The nature of dark matter and properties of neutrinos are among the mostpressing issues in contemporary particle physics. The dual-phase xenontime-projection chamber is the leading technology to cover the availableparameter space for Weakly Interacting Massive Particles (WIMPs), whilefeaturing extensive sensitivity to many alternative dark matter candidates. These detectors can also study neutrinos through neutrinoless double-beta decayand through a variety of astrophysical sources. A next-generation xenon-baseddetector will therefore be a true multi-purpose observatory to significantlyadvance particle physics, nuclear physics, astrophysics, solar physics, andcosmology. This review article presents the science cases for such a detector.<br

Diffusion of hydrogen into and through Îł-iron by density functional theory

This study is concerned with the early stages of hydrogen embrittlement on an atomistic scale. We employed density functional theory to investigate hydrogen diffusion through the (100), (110) and (111) surfaces of Îł-Fe. The preferred adsorption sites and respective energies for hydrogen adsorption were established for each plane, as well as a minimum energy pathway for diffusion. The H atoms adsorb on the (100), (110) and (111) surfaces with energies of ∌4.06 eV, ∌3.92 eV and ∌4.05 eV, respectively. The barriers for bulk-like diffusion for the (100), (110) and (111) surfaces are ∌0.6 eV, ∌0.5 eV and ∌0.7 eV, respectively. We compared these calculated barriers with previously obtained experimental data in an Arrhenius plot, which indicates good agreement between experimentally measured and theoretically predicted activation energies. Texturing austenitic steels such that the (111) surfaces of grains are preferentially exposed at the cleavage planes may be a possibility to reduce hydrogen embrittlement

Effects of structural modification on the DNA binding properties and photo-induced cleavage reactivity of propargylic sulfones conjugated with an anthraquinone structure

Propargylic sulfones are known as pH-dependent DNA cleaving agents. We have designed a novel propargylic sulfone conjugated with an anthraquinone structure and evaluated its DNA binding and cleavage characteristics. The propargylic sulfone 3 showed high intercalating ability attributable to anthraquinone chromophore, leading to the efficient alkylation of DNA. The anthraquinone chromophore in 3 also acted as a photosensitizer, and photoirradiation of 3 with DNA induced one-electron oxidation, resulting in the further DNA cleavage. Evaluation of the effect of 3 against EMT6/KU cells revealed that 3 exhibited potent cytotoxicity, even without photoirradiation. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved
