Post-LS3 Experimental Options in ECN3
The Experimental Cavern North 3 (ECN3) is an underground experimental cavern
on the CERN Pr\'evessin site. ECN3 currently hosts the NA62 experiment, with a
physics programme devoted to rare kaon decays and searches of hidden particles
approved until Long Shutdown 3 (LS3). Several options are proposed on the
longer term in order to make best use of the worldwide unique potential of the
high-intensity/high-energy proton beam extracted from the Super Proton
Synchrotron (SPS) in ECN3. The current status of their study by the CERN
Physics Beyond Colliders (PBC) Study Group is presented, including
considerations on beam requirements and upgrades, detector R&D and
construction, schedules and cost, as well as physics potential within the CERN
and worldwide landscape.Comment: 113 pages, 39 figure
Large underground, liquid based detectors for astro-particle physics in Europe: scientific case and prospects
This document reports on a series of experimental and theoretical studies
conducted to assess the astro-particle physics potential of three future
large-scale particle detectors proposed in Europe as next generation
underground observatories. The proposed apparatus employ three different and,
to some extent, complementary detection techniques: GLACIER (liquid Argon TPC),
LENA (liquid scintillator) and MEMPHYS (\WC), based on the use of large mass of
liquids as active detection media. The results of these studies are presented
along with a critical discussion of the performance attainable by the three
proposed approaches coupled to existing or planned underground laboratories, in
relation to open and outstanding physics issues such as the search for matter
instability, the detection of astrophysical- and geo-neutrinos and to the
possible use of these detectors in future high-intensity neutrino beams.Comment: 50 pages, 26 figure
Investigation of the Δn = 0 selection rule in Gamow-Teller transitions : The β-decay of 207 Hg
Gamow-Teller β decay is forbidden if the number of nodes in the radial wave functions of the initial and final states is different. This Δn=0 requirement plays a major role in the β decay of heavy neutron-rich nuclei, affecting the nucleosynthesis through the increased half-lives of nuclei on the astrophysical r-process pathway below both Z=50 (for N>82) and Z=82 (for N>126). The level of forbiddenness of the Δn=1ν1g 9/2 →π0g 7/2 transition has been investigated from the β − decay of the ground state of 207 Hg into the single-proton-hole nucleus 207 Tl in an experiment at the ISOLDE Decay Station. From statistical observational limits on possible γ-ray transitions depopulating the π0g 7/2 −1 state in 207 Tl, an upper limit of 3.9×10 −3 % was obtained for the probability of this decay, corresponding to logft>8.8 within a 95% confidence limit. This is the most stringent test of the Δn=0 selection rule to date
Collimation for the LHC high intensity beams
The unprecedented design intensities of the LHC require several important advances in beam collimation. With its more than 100 collimators, acting on various planes and beams, the LHC collimation system is the biggest and most performing such system ever designed and constructed. The solution for LHC collimation is explained, the technical components are introduced and the initial performance is presented. Residual beam leakage from the system is analysed. Measurements and simulations are presented which show that collimation efficiencies of better than 99.97 % have been measured with the 3.5 TeV proton beams of the LHC, in excellent agreement with expectations.peer-reviewe
